Description: Mets Opening Day starter Clay Holmes surrendered his first two runs of the spring but got little offensive support in a 4-1 loss to the Nationals. The Mets managed just five hits with Pete Alonso driving in their only run on a fielder's choice.

Mets top prospects Brandon Sproat and Drew Gilbert led Triple-A Syracuse to a doubleheader sweep on Saturday. In the opener, Sproat's fastball hit triple-digits, as he threw six innings of shutout ball, striking out six. In the nightcap, Gilbert ripped a pair of home runs as the Mets finished taking both ends of the twinbill.

After another bad loss in Pittsburgh, the Mets leadership group of Pete Alonso, Francisco Lindor and Brandon Nimmo called a team meeting. While the players kept specifics private, they did acknowledge that it was a productive, open discussion about how to begin turning things around. They also agreed it was the right time for the entire group  to be reminded that they "have each other's backs" and to stay together.

For the first time this season, Mets manager Carlos Mendoza was ejected for arguing balls and strikes, feeling a strike call on Mark Vientos changed the entire complexion of the inning and feeling it was important to "protect my players." The long rain delay wreaked havoc on his pitching plan, especially with certain arms not available. Mendoza reiterated that "they're going through it" but have to continue overcome the adversity.

For the second consecutive game, the Mets were pounded by the Pirates, 9-2. The frustration boiled over in the fourth inning when Mets manager Carlos Mendoza was ejected for arguing balls and strikes. While the Mets continued to struggle with men in scoring position, Pittsburgh batted .500, going 6-for-12.

Mets catcher Francisco Alvarez was sent to Triple-A Syracuse last week to try and re-discover his game. Alvarez launched a 434-foot home run against Rochester on Saturday afternoon.

Mets manager Carlos Mendoza characterized David Peterson's slider and changeup as "floating," which led to a four-run inning for the Pirates and an eventual 9-1 loss for the Mets. Mendoza said there was nothing wrong health-wise but more of a mechanics issue. Mark Vientos made his return to the lineup after being sidelined with a hamstring strain and "felt good," despite going 0-for-4 with a pair of strikeouts.

After closing out their homestand with a pair of wins over the Braves, the Mets looked ready to turn the corner but David Peterson struggled for the second start in a row as the Pirates routed New York 9-1. Juan Soto provided their only bright spot with his 20th home run of the season.

Yankees

Playing in his 500th MLB game, Jazz Chisholm celebrated the milestone by launching his 12th HR of the season in the Yankees 3-0 shutout of Oakland. Teammate Cody Bellinger said it was "understandable" that the A's would walk Aaron Judge to pitch to him in the third inning but Bellinger made them pay with an RBI single. Yanks starter Will Warren took center stage on Friday night however, tossing five shutout innings, after escaping a bases-loaded jam in the first inning.

It was a day to forget for the Yankees, both on the mound and at the plate in a 7-0 loss to the A's. Starter Clarke Schmidt admitted to being "frustrated" with giving up a pair of home run balls while Paul Goldschmidt and manager Aaron Boone tipped their cap to A's starter and former Yankee JP Sears who allowed just two hits over 5.2 innings, as New York's offense continues to struggle.

Yankees starter Clarke Schmidt felt he needed to attack the strike zone more aggressively and he saw it pay off against the Orioles on Saturday afternoon, throwing seven innings without allowing a hit in a 90 win. While Schmidt was tempted to try and complete the no-no, his pitch count was already at 103 so he wisely took "the big picture" approach. Former Yankee Gary Sanchez singled off reliever JT Brubaker to spoil the no hitter but catcher J.C. Escarra was impressed with Schmidt's performance nonetheless. Shortstop Anthony Volpe called the outing "incredible" and was not the least bit surprised at how he dominated the Orioles lineup.

Reliever Luke Weaver's return to the Yankees bullpen was not an auspicious one, surrendering the go-ahead HR to Baltimore's Ramon Urias in a 5-3 loss. He termed it "devastating" saying he felt good physically but will have to bounce back from a tough loss. Starter Max Fried wasn't his usual pinpoint self either, allowing a pair of runs in the first inning. While captain Aaron Judge did belt his 27th home run of the season, he lamented some scoring opportunities that the team failed to cash in on.

SNY MLB Insider Andy Martino says while the Yankees were frustrated with their offensive numbers over their recent six-game skid, manager Aaron Boone and the coaching staff were confident that the team's struggles would be short-lived. Thursday afternoon the Yanks unleashed a 12-hit attack in their 7-3 win over the Angels and hope the resurgence continues as they face Baltimore for a weekend series.
