SYOSSET, N.Y. ? Friday marked the 14th anniversary of the September 11th attacks on the World Trade Center in New York. The Islanders roster doesn?t boast anyone from the New York area, but the significance of the day is not lost on the team.

Through their time playing hockey in New York, several players have gained a greater appreciation of what the city went through on the morning of and the days following the 9/11 attacks.

Week 11 is here already, if you can believe that. The NFL is in full swing and this week offers some attractive games, but here in NYC, you will be missing some of those in favor of the Giants and Jets. ?Overall, however, the games televised here should scratch your football itch.

NFL games were the two most-watched shows on TV last week (Nov. 4-10) with the CBS national telecast (mostly Denver Broncos-San Diego Chargers) topping all sports and entertainment competition with 24.1 million viewers followed by NBC?s Sunday Night Football (Dallas Cowboys-New Orleans Saints) drawing 21.1 million viewers. This marks the 10th time in 10 weeks that an NFL game has topped the viewership charts.

Locally, NFL games topped ratings in 27 NFL markets last week. For the season, NFL games rank as the 20 most-watched TV shows since Labor Day, up from 16 at this point last season.

11:47PM: The following quotes are from the Rangers:

-??????? Ryan Callahan on the team?s mentality heading into Game 3??We?ve been in this situation before.? We just have to go into Jersey and try to get that next game.? We can?t get down.? Like I said, we?ve been in this situation before, and we?ve come through.? We?ll get a day off tomorrow, and be ready to work on Friday.?

-??????? Carl Hagelin on the importance of the first goal of the game??It seems to be like that in the playoffs, the team to get the first goal seems to play a bit more relaxed. They don?t have to take many chances to get chances. Then you just play well defensively.?

11:31PM: The following quotes are from the Rangers:

-??????? John Tortorella on overtime in the playoffs??They?re all emotional games.? It?s a kick in the gut when you lose because it happens so quickly and it?s pretty exciting when you win because it happens quick.?

-??????? Henrik Lundqvist on Marc Staal??He?s getting better and better ? more physical. He made some great plays in the third period, two breakups - big opportunities for them. That?s the Marc we want. He?s all over the ice. In our own end making big stops, then he?s joining the rush. He adds a lot to our game.?

Stats: Adam's Thoughts:

  • The Rangers had 26 shots blocked today and they only blocked seven. Just like in game two, they got beat by their own game.
  • I have a feeling that many think the Rangers were also beat by the refs today.
  • The only reason this game was this close was because Henrik Lundqvist made a few outstanding saves.
  • It was really nice to see Artem Anisimov pick up a goal and an assist. He works well with Brian Boyle
  • Chris Kreider made a mistake on the first goal and that limited his ice time. He was bound to have a slip up after having so much early success. It's a learning experience and Kreider will get better because of it.

6:56PM: The following quotes are from the Rangers:

-??????? John Tortorella on the play of Chris Kreider??We showed him our concept.? We went over our concept with him, and then we just wanted him to play.? There are a number of things that we?ll end up working with him on but this isn?t the time of year to do that.? We just want his instincts and speed, and then just go out there and play.? As I said the other night, forget about what he?s doing on the ice, the mental part of the game as far as him trying to make a difference every shift it?s really good stuff for a young kid.?

-??????? Henrik Lundqvist on the team?s focus after Washington?s goal??That could have hurt us big time, but we came in here, regrouped, talked about staying patient and just let the game come to us.? I think we played really well.? Coming from that Game 7, such an emotional and big win, it was important for us to regroup and start all over. This team doesn?t give up much so we have to be smart with pucks and they kind of wait for mistakes, so the key for us is not to make too many.?

Scoring: Stats: Thoughts:
  • It's officially time to mention Brian Boyle when the topic of the Rangers identity comes up. He has been beyond excellent in this series.
  • Henrik Lundqvist was absolutely spectacular in every way shape and form. You can tell that he woke up today and told himself that he wasn't going to allow a goal
  • This was what I expected from Chris Kreider tonight. I was both surprised and glad that he played on the top line and thought it was the right move to remove him with Derek Stepan in the third period. There were flashes and for a player playing his first game in the playoffs, I thought he did pretty well.

11:11PM: The following quotes are from the Rangers:

?? John Tortorella on tonight?s game??There?s always a natural tendency where you end up defending. I thought we could have made some plays to try and keep some puck possession, but that?s what happens when you get into a little bit of that. I don?t think we?re that bad, it?s kind of a fluky goal that goes right through Marc (Staal), right through his legs and they bang it in. We were four minutes away from winning the hockey game and I still don?t think we played that poorly tonight, but I do think we need to continue to attack.?

-??????? Henrik Lundqvist on tonight?s game??There are going to be bad bounces, but you just have to move on. They?re a good team and create a lot of chances. I knew going into this series it wasn?t going to be easy, so we just have to forget about this one and get ready for the next one.?

Thoughts:

  • Brandon Dubinsky scored and looked like the player the Rangers need him to be. He fits in well with Brian Boyle and Ruslan Fedotenko and could be a big part of the Rangers third line in the playoffs.
  • I think that Brooks Orpik could end up seeing a suspension for that knee on knee hit on Derek Stepan. He seemed to be targeting Stepan on some shifts. Would think it's doubtful, even if he is fine, that he plays on Saturday

10:18PM: The following quotes are from the Rangers:

-??????? John Tortorella on tonight?s game??We had some chances.? (Buffalo?s) second goal really killed us, it really hurt us, because (Ryan) Miller is playing so well.? We gave that one up when we had full control of the puck and really maybe a chance to score another goal ourselves.?

-??????? Henrik Lundqvist on tonight?s game??You just try to stop the puck; you don?t try to adjust your game. It is what it is. We were close to tying the game, but it was pretty obvious that the odd man rushes killed us tonight. Going into the third, we felt like we had a chance to tie the game. We played pretty well but it was just a couple of turnovers that really cost us. They?re a quick team and we knew that it was important to be smart with the puck, we just had a couple of tough bounces on the blue line.?

  • Well we wanted secondary scoring and tonight, with Stepan, Dubinsky, Girardi and Mats Zuccarello, we got it.

  • Brandon Prust had a great game and deserved all the praise the broadcasters were heaping on him.
  • The Rangers played "the right way" tonight and it showed. They had a high level of intensity and left everything on the ice.
  • It's an important win not just for the two points, but to give the team some confidence in beating a good team.

10:23PM: The following quotes are from the Rangers:

-??????? John Tortorella on tonight?s game??It?s one of the better performances I?ve seen (Colorado goaltender Semyon Varlamov).? You can see how that game was going.? A couple of Dubi?s (Brandon Dubinsky) shots were ready to trickle in, and he (Varlamov) gets it with his butt end.? That?s just the way it went.? I?m encouraged. We were stiffer. I thought we made some really good defensive plays and our chances were really good chances, so we can?t get discouraged.?

-??????? Henrik Lundqvist on tonight?s game??I feel pretty good. The last few games I haven?t seen that much action, so the toughest part is to stay sharp. Two goals (against) tonight. I feel pretty good, but still I would have liked to come up with two more saves and have a 1-0 game. We just have to keep working hard. I think we did a lot of good things. Personally, I felt pretty good. We still have a few things to improve, including myself.?
