[sny-box]The Least You Should Know About the Devils...?42-year old Jaromir Jagr has played 80 games for the Devils and leads the team with 64 points. Jagr trails Mike Gartner by three goals for sixth on the NHL's All-Time list... Ryan Clowe, Bryce Salvador and Adam Henrique all missed the team's last game with injuries... The Devils finish up their season Sunday at home against the Bruins... [/sny-box]

After a 2-0 win in Montreal last night, the Islanders are right back in action in New Jersey tonight against the Devils. The Devils have been knocked out of playoff contention since these two teams last met a couple weeks back on March 29.Jersey is 3-1-2 in their last six including two shootout losses, which has been their achilles heel all season. They are 0-12 overall in shootouts, the only team in the NHL this year without a shootout win. If the Devils continue without a shootout win this year, they will be only the fourth team to ever go a full season without a shootout win. They will also be the most futile in single season, almost beating the others combined:
  1. 2013-14 Devils (currently 0-12)
  2. 2012-13 Leafs (0-5)
  3. 2012-13 Flames (0-3)
  4. 2006-07 Hurricanes (0-5)
As for the Islanders, Anders Nilsson is expected to start in goal tonight against Corey Schneider Martin Brodeur for the Devils. The rest of the lineup will be revealed later this afternoon but it should be the same as last night save for Johan Sundstrom. Justin Johnson has been called up to replace Sundstrom.[sny-box]

It's a trade deadline rematch tonight at the Islanders travel to Montreal to face the Canadiens and Thomas Vanek. The Islanders did end up swapping the second round pick with a fifth as Montreal clinched a playoff berth earlier this month. Both have been on a hot streak since Vanek was acquired; Vanek has 6 goals and 15 points in 16 games and the Habs have won 10 of their last 13.The Islanders start the final game of a three-game road trip to end the year. They'll be in New Jersey tomorrow night and Buffalo on Sunday. The goalies tonight are confirmed to be Evgeni Nabokov for the Islanders and Carey Price for the Canadiens. The Isles will also hold out all their injured players for the remainder of the year:https://twitter.com/StapeNewsday/status/454286923092074497Your lines are the practice lines from this morning per the Twitterer above.[sny-box]

[sny-box]The Least You Should Know About the Senators...?The Senators will be without left wing Collin Greening when they take on the Isles on Tuesday. Greening has not played since March 30 due to an undisclosed injury. He did partake in practice with the Senators on Monday. ... Craig Anderson will start for Ottawa on Tuesday night. He played in last Wednesday's 2-1 loss to the Islanders in Ottawa. ... Defenseman Patrick Wiercioch could become the 89th player in Senators history to play in 100 games if he plays against the Isles... [/sny-box]

The Islanders get set to play their final home game of the year on Tuesday against the Ottawa Senators.Brett Gallant will make his NHL debut after getting called up on Monday from AHL Bridgeport. Gallant has a goal and an assist in 56 games for the Sound Tigers. He also leads Bridgeport in penalty minutes with 246. Scott Mayfield will make his home debut for the Islanders after playing in his first NHL contest on Sunday.Mayfield saw 17:04 of playing time in the 4-0 shutout loss in Columbus.Anders Nilsson will start in net for the Islanders. He is 6-6-2 on the season and was in net for the Islanders when they defeated the Senators last Wednesday in the Canadian capital.[sny-box]

[sny-box]The Least You Should Know About the Blue Jackets...?Ryan Johansen has 31 goals for Columbus this year, the second most ever for the franchise by a player not named Rick Nash... Nathan Horton and Nikita Nikitin are both questionable for tonight's game...Sergei Bobrovsky is the confirmed starter for Columbus... ?[/sny-box]

The Islanders will look to play spoiler again for another Eastern Conference team's playoff hopes, as they travel to Columbus to play the Blue Jackets. Columbus is currently sitting in the final playoff spot in the East, one point ahead of New Jersey and Toronto. Both teams could be worn out for this one; tonight will be each team's fourth game in the last six games. Columbus' final week of the season is especially condensed, as they play five games in seven days this week and eight games in 12 April days overall. For the Islanders, Scott Mayfield is expected to make his NHL debut and Johan Sundstrom will also play after both were recalled last night. They will replace the re-injured Michael Grabner and Calvin de Haan. Anders Nilsson is the confirmed starter in goal with Sergei Bobrovsky on the other side of the ice. Here's a guess at the lineup:[sny-box]
Projected Lineup:
Lee-Nielsen-BaileyCzuczman-HamonicNilsson
Persson-Nelson-ClutterbuckCarkner-DonovanNabokov

[sny-box]The Least You Should Know About the Capitals...?Brooks Laich and former Islander Jack Hillen will both miss today's game due to injury... The Caps lost 2-1 in New Jersey last night and are 0-3-2 in their last five games... Alex Ovechkin is one goal away from his first 50-goal season since 2009-10... [/sny-box]

?The Capitals playoff hopes are nearly gone after a string of recent defeats. The Capitals haven't won since March 22 and they only have two points from the five games since that point. That's put their playoff hopes basically to the line, as they can now only achieve a maximum of 91 points with five games to go. They're going to need to win out and have teams in front of them collapse to have any hope of making it in. SportsClubStats.com has them with a 1.2% chance of making the playoffs right now.The Islanders have been hot of late despite not having John Tavares and Kyle Okposo in the lineup. They are 5-0-1 in their last six games. Today's start is a bit odd at 5pm, so take note of that if you're heading to the Coliseum. It's also the first night of a back-to-back, as the Islanders will play the Columbus Blue Jackets at 6pm in Ohio tomorrow night. No word on who tonight's goalie will be but I'd imagine the same lineup as the one that beat the Senators?on Wednesday night. Michael Grabner did skate yesterday, so it's possible he could play tonight but I would guess he would return next week out of precaution due to?the concussion.[sny-box]
Projected Lineup:
Lee-Nielsen-Baileyde Haan-HamonicNilsson
Persson-Nelson-ClutterbuckCarkner-DonovanNabokov

Bobby Ryan is out for the year after sports hernia surgery... Jason Spezza, Jared Cowen and Colin Greening are all questionable for tonight's game... Ottawa did not play last night, so Craig Anderson is the expected starter... Defender Erik Karlsson actually leads the team in points with 70 in 75 games... [/sny-box]

After winning at the Coliseum last night, the Islanders have won two in a row and four of their last five. They'll head up to Canada tonight to face the Senators?for the second of a back-to-back set of games. The young players that have been called up are?playing well, which is nice, although it's hard to get too high about it when the games don't mean much of anything. The Islanders actually have six players in the lineup that were on the Sound Tigers' opening night roster and you can add a seventh with an asterisk for Kevin Czuczman, who started the year in college. Hopefully this will translate to October.Anders Nilsson is the expected starter tonight, as Nabokov played last night. The projected lineup is as follows, with likely no changes after a win:[sny-box]

The Islanders face-off against the Florida Panthers for the final time this season on Tuesday at Nassau Coliseum. The Isles have had a bit of trouble with Florida this year losing both previous match ups. On January 14, the Isles lost 4-2 to Florida in Fort Lauderdale and then dropped another two points to the Panthers on March 2, this time at Nassau Coliseum.Islander Head Coach Jack Capuano will have Evgeni Nabokov start between the pipes and will have the lineup on the ice that appeared in Saturday's 2-1 win over the Devils. The Panthers did not announce a starter, but it likely will be Roberto Luongo.Unlike Saturday night's contest, there will be no playoff implications on the line. The Panthers are in the bottom of the Atlantic Division, sitting in seventh place, and the Islanders are last in the Metropolitan Division.[sny-box]

The Islanders host the Devils for the third and final time this season at Nassau Coliseum, and while the game does not have any playoff implications for the Islanders, New Jersey desperately needs the two points.Anders Nilsson will try to keep the Devils from leaving Long Island with a win. Nilsson has seen action against New Jersey, but has not recorded a win or loss against them this season. Cory Schneider, who is starting for the Devils, is 1-0-0 this year against the Islanders. The last time the Devils made a trip to Uniondale they defeated the Isles 6-1. Jaromir Jagr, who recorded his 700th career goal in the win, along with five other players scored for New Jersey that day.In their last 10 games the Islanders have gone 5-3-2, while the Devils are 4-5-1 in the same span.John Persson will make his home debut when he takes the ice on Saturday. Tonight at the Coliseum the Islanders will face off against the Sabres, who have been in the NHL's basement since pretty much the start of the season. Buffalo, as you are probably aware, has had a fire sale all season. They traded away Thomas Vanek for Matt Moulson, got rid of Ryan Miller for Jaroslav Halak and at the deadline they were able to flip Moulson and Halak for more picks and prospects. The one guy they tried unsuccessfully to get rid of was one-time sort of Islander Christian Erhoff, who remains a Sabre.??

They played some goalie carousel at the trade deadline sending Ilya Bryzgalov to Minnesota for a fourth round pick and they acquired Anaheim's Viktor Fasth for a third and a fifth...[/sny-box]

When you look at the Oilers and Islanders there are certainly some (sad) similarities. Both teams have struggled since dynasties of the 1980s -- save for Edmonton's run in 2006 -- and both have been rebuilding since the first lockout. Both fanbases are also equally upset about trades; most of the Oilers blogosphere is upset about the team consistently trading for fighters, although the Fasth trade looks good on paper, and the Islanders, well, their deadline deal did not go over well (meanwhile in Montreal, a online retailer has swipe at Garth Snow in the description of their Thomas Vanek Canadiens jersey).?

UNIONDALE, N.Y. -- The Islanders will get some help on their back end Saturday night as Travis Hamonic will return to the Islander lineup for the first time since January 12.?He has been out with an upper body injury since the game in Dallas and has been itching to return to action."It's never easy," Hamonic said about having to sit out. "To be quite honest with you I wish I could play 60 minutes a night. Having to sit on the bench I'd rather be on the ice... ?It pissed me off every night, whether we were winning or losing. When we're winning you wanna be out there with the team doing it and if you're losing you wanna be out there trying to help."It really gets me going when I have to sit out and watch a game, so I've been looking forward to this moment."Hamonic has missed the last 12 games and over that span the Islanders have gone 4-7-1 without him in the lineup. The Islanders did catch a break earlier in the week with the return of Lubomir Visnovsky. However, there is a question of necessity as to why play Hamonic with just one game to go before the NHL pauses for the lengthy Olympic break. Islander Head Coach Jack Capuano told reporters that it was the defenseman who wanted to hit the ice tonight."He wanted to play the last game and he could have played the last game," Capuano said. "He wants to get in there. He wanted to get in the last game. We would never put anyone in a situation that wasn't 100 percent. The same thing with Nabby in the stadium game, so he's ready to go."Hamonic will be paired up with Calvin de Haan during Saturday's contest agains the Colorado Avalanche and the team will not monitor Hamonic too much during the game. "He's ready to go," Capuano reiterated.Isles Healthy for a ChangeThe Islanders will enter Saturday's game against the Avalanche fully healthy for the first time since the beginning of the season. The return of Travis hamonic, and Lubomir Visnovsky earlier this week, the Isles have no players on the injured reserve."Like every other team now you have some bumps and bruises, but guys are battling through it," Capuano said after the morning skate. "In the back end now we've got our guys and both goaltenders are healthy now. We've gone through some tough stretches."Hamonic Added: "I'm not gunna lie it's nice to see everyone healthy. It's nice to see a full roster, but we're not going to use that as an excuse for whats gone on here. There's teams that have had more injuries than we have and that's just part of the process. As a teammate you never wanna see guys sitting out injured."Matt Donovan Sent to BridgeportThe Islanders loaned defenseman Matt Donovan to the Bridgeport Sound Tigers Saturday morning.Donovan was the odd man out with the return of Travis Hamonic and he will get to time to continue to work on his game down in Bridgeport. In a 17 game stint earlier in the year he recored 14 points (three goals, 11 assists) for the Sound Tigers.

UNIONDALE, N.Y. -- The Islanders had every chance to win Tuesday night, but in the end it was the lowly Calgary Flames that came away with the 4-2 win at Nassau Coliseum.Matt Stajan scored with 5:32 remaining in the game to put the Flames ahead 3-2, but it came down to the Islanders just not capitalizing on scoring chances. The Isles power play went 0-4 on the night and ?has been shutout the last 28 times they've had the man advantage."We find ways to lose games more than we find ways to win them," said Islander Captain John Tavares. "And it's one we let slip away."Calgary started off the game slow and disinterested for a large chunk of the first and second periods. The Islanders outshot the Flames 22-11 through the first two periods, but it was the Flames that struck first late in the second period.Sean Monahan was the recipient of a lucky bounce. The puck bounced off the back of one of his teammates and landed right in front him. Monahan quickly shot it off the crossbar and into the net at 14:15.Denis Wideman made it 2-0 at 18:08 of the second, but the Islanders found an answer with 6.1 seconds left in the period. Thomas Hickey scored a rebound goal to pull the Islanders within one.Calvin de Haan scored 7:31 into the third period to tie the game, but the tie would only last a few moments. David Jones scored the game winner for Calgary, although it could be argued that it was goaltender interference since it looked as though Evgeni Nabokov was being run into by a Flames player."At first I thought it was a high stick," Hickey explained when asked about his thoughts on the go ahead goal. "On the replay I guess it wasn't a high stick. Nabby felt he got pushed. [The officials] said our D pushed him in. I'd have to look at it again, but we felt like their guy was moving in and pushing Nabby into the net."The Flames added and empty netter with three seconds left to seal the win."It's really frustrating," Hickey later said about the loss. "Especially as the game went on I thought there were parts of our game that got better. Our power play got better after a rough start, but it's frustrating because you need those points."The lack of power play production played a big role in Thursday's loss. The Islanders have not had a goal on the man advantage since January against the New York Rangers.Despite the lack of success on the power play, Tavares said he didn't believe it wasn't functioning."I think we're getting chances and we're just not putting them in," he said. "We're shooting the puck and sometimes it doesn't go in. Sometimes it does. Obviously it can be a little sharper. Always can be better, but to say it's not producing anything is wrong. But clearly it's costing us some hockey games."

[sny-box]The Least You Should Know About the Flames... The Flames have almost an identical record as the Islanders and have also struggled this season... However, the Western Conference was hot to start the year and Calgary was out of playoff contention a bit earlier although both conference's eighth seeds are now in a similar spot... Calgary also has a similar goaltending combo as the Isles, as Karri Ramo ?(.908) and Reto Berra (.894) have below average and well below average numbers...[/sny-box]

Tonight the Islanders return home for the first of two games prior to the Olympics break. They'll host the Calgary Flames tonight in the first of two matchups this year, with the other coming in a few weeks on March 7. On Saturday night Colorado comes to town and then we'll all focus on the dogs and missing doorknobs... I mean SPORTS ... in Sochi.??

[sny-box]The Least You Should Know About the Capitals... Washington has struggled lately, as they had a seven game losing streak in mid-January. They're currently 3-5-3 in their last 10... After a three day break -- one that's seemed an awful lot longer with the Vanek news -- the Islanders are back in action tonight against their first non-Ranger opponent in more than a week. They'll travel to Washington to play the Capitals in front of the whole continent on TSN2 and NBCSN.??

NEW YORK -- After defeating the Islanders 2-1 at Yankee Stadium on Wednesday, the Rangers did it again on Friday in the final meeting of the year between the two rivals.A span of 2:45 saw a 1-1 game turn into a 3-1 Ranger lead, and eventually a 4-1 Blue Shirt win. Derek Brassard scored the game winner, and Brad Richards and ?Ryan McDonagh scored the insurance goals for New York."It was fairly even game. I think when they pushed and we didn't respond like we normally do," Thomas hickey said. "Their goalie was phenomenal and made some really good saves. They earned their chances and definitely had some grade A's that we didn't really have an answer to in the third period."Another slow start put the Islanders at an early disadvantage. With the Rangers buzzing to start the first period, Brian Boyle found the back of the net 3:29 into the period. Marc Staal fired a shot from the point that Boyle was able to redirect in front. It wasn't until late in the second period that the Isles evened the score at one. Calvin de Haan had a shot from the point go off the glove of Ranger goaltender Henrik Ludnqvist and bounce right to Kyle Okposo, who buried the rebound. The game would remain tied at one until midway through the third period. The Rangers had an extra attacker on the ice due to a delayed penalty that was going to be called on the Islanders. Mats Zuccarello passed over to Marc Staal, who sent a cross-ice feed to Brassard that he put home and gave the Rangers a 2-1 lead.Richards gave the Rangers some wiggle room scoring less than three minutes later to make it 3-1 and McDonagh scored the empty net goal with one second left in the game. The loss was the Isles fifth in a row and over that span the Islanders have picked up just one of the 10 points available."It's so magnified for us now," John Tavares said. "The wins we need and the points we need, and it's no secret. This loss, the outdoor game, the game before that. They're all important games and we've had some opportunities going into third periods being in games. We haven't gotten the job done."The Islanders are continuing to struggle getting their offense going. They had 39 shots on Lundqvist, but had just one goal to show for it and the Islanders power play did not convert on any of their chances Friday night."They're making the plays, obviously they have opportunities," Islander Coach Jack Capuano said. "From the bench it looked like a couple of them had eyes and were going to go in. I don't think the power play was good. I think that we still got around the perimeter and we had opportunities to shoot the puck."That was a little bit of a disappointment for me tonight."The blue and orange now sit nine points out of a playoff spot and have three games before the Olympic break. On Tuesday they take on the Washington Capitals in the nation's capital before returning to the Nassau Coliseum to play Calgary and Colorado.Getting points from the next three games is something the team knows it must do, but they are trying to take things one step at a time."It's gotta be one game at a time, but you'd be stupid if you don't look at the big picture," Hickey said. We need the points, we need every point especially before this break here. Every point's going to matter. The one's that matter most are the two in front of you."

UNIONDALE, NY ? Coming back from a two-goal deficit, no problem. Holding onto a two-goal lead, not as simple for the Islanders.Thursday night the Isles jumped to an early lead, but like so many before, it disappeared just as quickly. The Islanders showed fight in the end, but the visiting Pittsburgh Penguins held off the home team and won 6-4.?They played a good and they did a lot of the little things," John Tavares said. "And they executed better than us.?Things looked like they were going to go well for the Islanders to start the game. Micahael Grabner found the back of the net at 1:39 after a bouncing puck made its? way to his stick, and he fired it past Penguins goaltender Jeff Zatkoff. Then Paul Martin made a costly turnover in the neutral zone and Grabner took the puck the other way, with Brock Nelson on his wing. Grabner sent the puck to Nelson, who made it 2-0 with his ninth goal of the year. However, just as quickly as the Isles took the lead Pittsburgh evened it up.In span of 1:52 Chris Kunitz and Sidney Crosby tied the game at two. Kunitz scored at the top of the slot off a feed from the Penguins? captain and Crosby himself scored off a pass from Kunitz, who was behind the net.Olli Maata made it 3-2 a little over five minutes into the second period and Kris Letang scored while the Penguins were on the power play to make it 4-2.The Islanders cut the lead to one after Josh Bailey scored his first goal since October 25, but Evgeni Malkin put Pittsburgh back in front by two roughly three minutes later in the contest's final period.Kyle Okposo brought the Islanders back within one midway through the third. The goal was initially waved off, but changed after a review by the officials. The Islanders had several chances late in the game to tie it up, including a 50 second five-on-three opportunity, but they could not convert and Brandon Sutter scored an empty net goal with three seconds left in the game to seal the win.?We gotta learn to play with the lead,? Calvin de haan said. ?We?ve had leads and blown them. It starts from goaltending out. Including D, forwards, everybody. It?s frustrating sometimes, cause anyone can beat anyone.?And for parts of the game the Islanders played like they could beat anyone. The Islanders played well early nand after Okposo had cut the Penguins lead to one in the third the Isles gave their opponent a run for their money. Frans Nielsen nearly tied the game while the Islanders were on the power play, but Zatkoff robbed him. However what frustrated Islander Head Coach Jack Capuano was not the missed scoring chances, but the blunders that put the team in another come back situation.?The frustration part for me was?you gotta move. You can?t watch,? he said. ?This is a team that?s gunna skate. It?s a function of you managing the puck properly. Let the puck do the work and play in the offensive zone. And that?s the way this team plays. If we?re going to have any success that?s the way we need to play.?

The Islanders and Flyers are back at it today in a holiday matinee at the Coliseum. Game time is 1pm, so if you're one of the fortunate folks not working today, enjoy the early start time.?

The starting goalies are not confirmed for either team for today and likely we won't know until closer to game time as neither team is probable to have a morning skate with the early start time. Neither Mason nor Poulin had an excellent game on Saturday night, so you might see one or two backups, especially since both teams play again on Tuesday.?

After four days off, the Islanders are finally back in action tonight at the Coliseum against the Devils. The divisional opponents have not met since the Isles opening night in New Jersey on October 4.

For the Devils, they come in after playing last night against Columbus at the Rock. That might not be good news, though. They have only one regulation loss in 10 games this year when playing on the second night of a back-to-back. Corey Schneider will get the start and it'll be his first career start against the Islanders. He's played well this year with a .910 SVP but has not started most of the Devils' games. Marty Brodeur has gotten more starts with 22 to Schneider's 17.

The Islanders will be missing John Tavares tonight as he is day-to-day with a lower body injury. He did not practice yesterday. That means Brock Nelson will slide up into the #1 center spot and Peter Regin will come back into the lineup. Aaron Ness switches out for Matt Carkner. Earlier in the day, the Islanders activated Brian Strait from IR and put Radek Martinek on IR. Strait is expected to play tonight for the first time since October 22nd.

The Least You Should Know About the Kings... Kings "backup" Ben Scrivens is expected to start. I put backup in quotes because he has played well in Jon Quick's absence. Quick has been out since November 13th with a groin strain. Scrivens has a .943 SVP and three shutouts in 12 starts this year... Six Kings have 6 or more goals, but no one has more than 10... 10 Kings have 10+ points as this is a very deep lineup. For comparisons, only five Islanders have 10+ points... The Royal Half previews the match from the opposing viewpoint...[/sny-box]

It's a late start on the east coast if you want to stay up for it, as the Islanders are in LA. Game time is 10:30pm in New York. This is the Islanders first trip to Los Angeles since November 13, 2010. The Islanders lost 5-1 that night and are 2-5 in their last seven trips to LA dating back to 2000.
