1986 Giants

Twenty eight?years ago today, the Giants defeated the Washington Redskins, 17-0, in the NFC Championship Game at a wind-swept, raucous Giants Stadium. The victory jettisoned Bill Parcells' top-seeded 14-2 crew to the franchise's first Super Bowl appearance.

Two weeks later, the Giants rocked the Denver Broncos, 39-20, in Super Bowl XXI in Pasadena to win the team's first of four Super Bowl championships.

I was in attendance for both of those games. Grown men, who had not seen the Giants win anything for 30 years, broke down and cried. Others drank and cheered. Me, personally? ?I was stunned. Both settings were surreal. It's as if it wasn't happening. But it did. And how.

The answers to Sunday's trivia challenge:

1. The team the Giants have beaten the most times is...the Redskins. The Giants are 92-64-4 against the Redskins, who were originally the Boston Braves in 1932 before becoming the Redskins in 1933. They moved to Washington in 1937.

2. HOFer Emlen Tunnell holds the Giants' all-time mark for punt returns with 257. Who is second?? Phil McConkey with 213. Tunnell (8.6 yds per attempt) had five returns for TDs. McConkey (8.0 YPA) had none. David Meggett was the team's most prolific returner: He averaged 11 YPA on 202 returns and scored six TDs.

Brought Smashmouth Football to the Swamp

Ron Erhardt, the man responsible for the Giants' offensive "smashmouth" style that won them two Super Bowls in 1986 and 1990, has passed away at the age of 80.

Erhardt was the head coach of the New England Patriots in the late 1970's-early 80's where he held his confidence in a young defensive coach by the name of Bill Parcells.

The Giants are one win away from another Super bowl appearance. Let?s let that statement sink in for a moment. The team that few if any gave a chance to in August, September, October, November & December?.is again making noise in January, much like the 2007 Giants.

Or are they more like the 1990 Giants?

The Giants lost another player for the season yesterday when it was learned that backup DB Justin Tryon was placed on IR with a broken arm. Tom Coughlin was taken by Tryon's dedication and courage when it was revealed that he played the entire second half in excruciating pain (see yesterday's notes below).

Who will replace Tryon on the roster? The easy fix would be to activate WR Ramses Barden off PUP. But he in no way can replace Tryon on specials. And that would still leave the club short in the defensive backfield...

WR Hakeem Nicks (hamstring), C David Baas (knee) and RB Ahmad Bradshaw (foot) are all still in the early stages of being evaluated. With an off day today, the Giants will let the smoke clear before they make any statements on whether these three will go north to Foxborough this weekend.

It is widely believed the 1986 Giants originated the tradition of dousing the head coach with Gatorade on the sidelines after a victory. As it turns out, although they perfected the ritual, they were not the first team to do it....

But where did the tradition start? In his excellent book, First in Thirst: How Gatorade Turned the Science of Sweat Into a Cultural Phenomenon, Darren Rovell wrote about how the Giants first began doing the celebration in a section titled ?The Inaugural Dunk.? Amazingly enough, it began as somewhat of an act of aggression!

Sunday's 25th Anniversary of the Giants Super Bowl XXI victory was such a rush for those who attended, it was almost like reliving the game a second time (video below).

Bill Parcells was extremely emotional over the reunion, his voice was barely audible during his media session. Old feelings came rushing back as he entered the media room backstage, even embracing long-time Giants beat writer Vinny DiTrani as if he were a long, lost brother.

"As Harry (Carson) said, 'We're all each other's guys'" Parcells stated in a wistful manner. Phil Simms did not get emotional during his session, but did admit it brought back some fond memories, saying not much changed over the years. The bond between the group was as strong as ever.

After this session I spoke with Simms about that picture-perfect day and his near-perfect game:

If you're a Giant fan, you have to love Phil McConkey.

The former Navy helicopter pilot exemplified the spirit of the Giants in 1986. ?McConkey was cut by the Giants before that season, but was re-acquired by the club to bolster its sagging special teams play. ?He did that, and more.

McConkey was the lovable underdog, the guy you had to root for. ?Today, at the Giants' anniversary event, he was as loquatious, passionate and poignant as ever.

Martin played his entire 14-year career with the Giants (1975-88) and is most remembered for two plays involving Broncos' QB John Elway that occurred during the 1986 season.

Recently we caught up with former Giants WR and special teamer Phil McConkey at a charity event in NYC.? He was always a player that could get the team fired up.? To this day, he is as animated and entertaining as ever.....

Phil, what is your take on the current Giants receiving corps?
A lot of young guys with incredible potential. I think what you see out of Steve Smith, one of the best clutch guys in the league. They have Manningham on the outside and Nicks, he could be a beast. Ramses Barden, we haven't even seen anything out of him Phil Simms wishes he had some of those guys! (laughter) If Phil Simms had those guys he'd be off the charts setting records.

Tell us about getting traded to Green Bay and Bill Parcells getting you back.

Former Giants Radio Announcer Was One Of Game's Best

Long before the sports media crush of the new millennium lowered the bar on class and loosened its belt on professionalism, there were real journalists and talented announcers covering sports who told it like it is.?

Jim Gordon was one of those people.? Not that his successor, Bob Papa, isn't a class act also (the Giants always have top-notch people in their throes) but Gordon was in the seat at perhaps the most exciting time in Giants' history - the Bill Parcells era.

Known mainly for his work as the voice of the New York Rangers' TV broadcasts, Gordon took over the Giants' radio play-by-play responsibilities in 1977 from another legend, Marty Glickman.? Glickman was a true giant in the field of radio broadcasting, spinning off proteges such as Marv Albert, Johnny Most, Spencer Ross and Bob Papa. Gordon had some big shoes to fill.

ESPN is reporting that former Giant great Lawrence Taylor will be participating in the upcoming season of "Dancing??With the Stars"

As a fan no one image ?has given me more pleasure then watching LT line up in a two point stance. The only other captured moment?that comes close is Patrick Ewing raising his arms on the media table at MSG after beating the Pacers to get to the finals. Still, I routed for big blue to fail on offense just so I could see more of #56 on D. I have a game worn jersey, 56 is in every one of my passwords for email, bank codes and ?bill paying. I even dated a girl with his initials once, just for the story. This news saddens me a bit, but the truth is Emmitt, Jason Taylor, Warren Sapp and Jerry Rice have already blazed the trail, so for?me the stigma is no longer as great. Still I will not be tuning in to ABC. I always want to remember LT in that two point stance hunting qb's like a bunch of CRAZED DOGS.

What are your thoughts?
