In the NBA draft, teams often default to selecting the ?best player available.? They do that assuming the player will develop as projected and become an asset that allows for flexibility.

However, sometimes those ?best players? end up languishing behind an established veteran and never live up to expectations.

Lamb falls under the category of ?tweener,? but the guy can stroke it and is very athletic. Lamb would be a perfect fit for a playoff team looking for a bench scorer to play off of a post player. If the Knicks could somehow figure a way to match him with Carmelo Anthony, they would make a vast improvement in Mike Woodson?s halfcourt, plodding, post-heavy style. He?s a first-round talent that needs a ?share first? point guard and solid post player to make a great impact in year one. It would appear the Knicks have both in Anthony and Jeremy Lin.
Can the Knicks move up to a position to draft Lamb or Jenkins? Don't know the answer to that, but if they stay at 48 the rest of these players should be available and really good value.

Via Larry Coon to me:

Fields is going to be a free agent, so he can?t be traded.
Multiple sources have told me over the past week that the Knicks are shopping Landry Fields and it appears they are trying to move into the first round if the Warriors agree to deal with the Knicks restricted free agent.

June is an exciting month for me because I get to submit all my homework that I've done over the course of the basketball season. Admittedly, it's impossible for me to have seen every prospect but I make my valuations based on Knicks needs at the time. Last year, the Knicks needed up front help which they addressed in Tyson Chandler and not in the draft where they decided to address another need: athleticism and perimeter defense.

This year the Knicks need shooters and depth/athleticism up front. They need a player at 48 who can play or challenge rotation positions immediately.

The NBA draft combine had some interesting tidbits and our friend Jon Wasserman points out, especially positive news about TKB favorite John Jenkins.?

Great find Alex Raskin?

James served as a military policeman, guarding detainees and protecting other service men and women, after dropping out of high school at age 17. He went on to earn a GED, hit a five-inch growth spurt and decided to give basketball a try.

"I started to love it in the military," he told?Kristie Ackert of the?New York Daily News?back in March. "I had lot of down time, was bored and there was a gym... I got some praise and learned I was good at it."

Young's sales pitch to the Knicks should center around his complimentary scoring tools.

Physically, Young sports fitting size for a 2-guard at 6'6 with a ridiculous 6'11 wingspan and strong overall basketball frame. He's aggressive with the basketball, though doesn't require it to produce offensively with the ability slash off the ball. His aggression, size and strength allow him to get to the rim while absorbing contact on the way.

I had a great look at Green at the PIT and he was very impressive. Here were some notes that I posted for Sheridanhoops.

Alabama?s JaMychal Green?s best game this season was arguably his effort against the Florida Gators in early March when he went for 22 points and 10 rebounds.

Well, the 6-foot-8 senior who averaged 14 points and 7 rebounds this season picked a heck of a time to play an even more dominant game as he shot 14-for-18 from the field in front of a packed gym of NBA scouts last night at Day 2 of the Portsmouth Invitational.

Darius Johnson-Odom is an interesting option for the Knicks. My guess is he'll be there for when they pick, but whether or not they want to go in this direction is the question.

As a prospect, he's labeled a combo-guard. Does NY need another one? I'm not so sure. However, he's more trustworthy with the ball than Toney Douglas, he's a disciplined defender, and frankly he's a better option at the point then any reserve on the roster.

We know the Knicks are. One who can play off of Melo's post ups.

Click here to read my friend Jonathan Wasserman's thoughts on his top 10 for NBAdraft.net.?Someone of good value at 48 is Missouri's Kim English, although he needs to get stronger. The Knicks may be better going in a different direction in terms of position.

I did a full report on Machado for several NBA teams. He played in a wide open system at Iona surrounded by shooters and utilized the pick and roll with Glover. They played very small and at an incredible pace all season long.

I watched him develop over 4 years.

I spent a few days hanging with scouts and executives last week at the Portsmouth Invitational in Virginia. It's an NBA draft invitational consisting of college seniors eligible for the draft and one where many future NBA players have been found over the years.

What I enjoy most about the tournament is that it's impossible to have seen every player there and there are instances where players stand out. I liked Moore from the get go, but his performance in the semi-finals, which I did not see, was very good.??He's already met with an Eastern Conference rival.

Temple's Ramone Moore put on a show Friday night at the Portsmouth Invitational Tournament in Portsmouth, Va.
