2012 NFL Draft

The final day of the NFL Draft was winding down and UMass RB Michael Cox was minutes away from becoming either Mr. Irrelevant or an undrafted free agent.

The Chicago Bears had used all their picks but still wanted Cox, and were angling to sign him after the draft. They were on the phone with Cox talking turkey when another team cut into the call.

?I was literally about to sign (with Chicago). I had the paperwork ready and was about to set that all up,? Cox said as per Matt Vautour of gazettenet.com. ?They put me on hold for a second. That?s when New York called and it was Coughlin. He said ?we?re going to draft you in a couple seconds here.??

What was it like when you first got the call from the Giants telling you that they were going to select you?

It was surreal. This has been a dream of mine since I was a kid playing tackle football in my backyard. I got the phone call and there was about four minutes left on the clock. I saw that 201 number and knew who it was. I turned the TV down, I got a big smile on my face and it was crazy. Coach Coughlin was like ?Welcome to the Giants.? It was amazing.

The Giants said they really liked your versatility. Would you be comfortable moving to right tackle after playing left tackle as a starter?

In my bones, I had a feeling Pugh would be wearing blue. He wasn't going to be there for Jerry Reese in Round Two, so he grabbed him at 19. Was it a reach? We'll see, but the Giants have been high on Pugh for some time and tonight validated that.

Here is what Walter Football had to say about Justin Pugh:

Most seasons the Giants' rookie class is a study of what's to come: talented young men that need time to develop. This season is no different, except the team could use their help right now. Unfortunately, it's not likely to happen.

Every unit on their roster has gone through the "next man up" scenario and in some instances a rookie has been that next man up. Top pick David Wilson, a RB from Virginia Tech with legendary speed, has curiously not been tapped on the shoulder to inject life into the Giants' ground game.

"Just because you?re a first-round draft pick doesn?t mean you?re ready to play, or they all would be great," said RB coach Jerald Ingram. ?"Also, the difference in makeup of size. David is not a big man. He?s not 265-270 pounds. He?s not 230-225. He is a situational player as a rookie right now. Yeah he?s explosive, but at what cost is he explosive? Is he explosive at the cost of not being able to protect well, not being able to know his job well enough being a pro? That all has to develop."

A number of Giants appeared to have sustained injuries in their loss to the Steelers Sunday.

Among them: Martellus Bennett, Andre Brown and Chris Canty.

Bennett was seen in "walking gingerly" following the game. It is not known whether the limp is related to the tight end's knee injury from earlier this season.

Despite Hurricane Sandy hitting the New York-New Jersey area earlier this week, the Giants (6-2) and the Steelers (4-3) will still face off at 4:25 p.m. Sunday in MetLife Stadium.

It's a match-up of ?two traditional powerhouses, with the Giants and Steelers having made a combined five appearances in the Super Bowl since 2006.

Pittsburgh has won the most Super Bowl championships with 6 -- one for the other ring finger, and New York has -- of course -- two in the past five years.

  • The Giants moved into a first-place tie with the Philadelphia Eagles, who lost to the Steelers. Both teams own a 3-2 record.
  • The Giants are now 8-0 in their eight contests against AFC foes. They last lost to an AFC squad in September 2010 v. Tennessee.
  • The Giants' 27 first-half points was the most since they scored 35 against Seattle in November 2010.
  • This was the 10th time the Giants scored at least 41 points in the Tom Coughlin era.
  • The Giants' 243 rushing yards was the highest total since running for 301 against Carolina in December 2008.
  • Ahmad Bradshaw's 200 yards and 30 carries were both career highs. His old mark was 151 yards v. Buffalo in 2007.
  • Bradshaw was credited with the ninth 200-yard rushing game in Giants history. It was the first since Derrick Ward ran for 215 v. Carolina, and Bradshaw's 30 carries was the most since Tiki Barber has 32 v.?Philadelphia?in 2005.
  • The G-Men are 38-10 when a running back reaches the century mark. The Giants are 9-0 when Bradshaw does.
  • The win marked the 77th regular-season victory for Tom Coughlin, which tied him with Bill Parcells for second place all-time behind Steve Owen (153 wins).
  • Eli Manning threw 259 yards, his 24th consecutive 200-yard game. He now owns the second-longest streak in NFL history, trailing Dan Fouts, who had 45.

From GFB contributor Matthew Cohen:

So Are They Better? Offense

Seven Rounds of the NFL draft. Free Agency. Post-Draft Free Agency. Players leaving. Players coming. So are the Giants better or worse off after all of this than they were at this time last season? Let's think about it. Offense first.

The NFL?s three most prolific passing offenses last season belonged to the New Orleans Saints (334.2 ypg), New England Patriots (317.8 ypg) and Green Bay Packers (307.8 ypg). There are a number of reasons why these offenses were so good last season, chief among them sound offensive line play, explosive receivers, schematic superiority and quarterback mastery.

It also helps when you have tight ends who?to put it rather bluntly but completely accurately?are dominant in every sense of the word.

After an offseason marked by injury woes, rumors of Tom Coughlin?s not-so-secure job security, a contractual dispute with Osi Umenyiora and another nondescript, trademark Jerry Reese free agency period, the Giants shocked most preseason prognosticators in 2011 by winning the NFC East with a 9-7 record.

The ?Dream team? Philadelphia Eagles were everyone?s preseason darlings, bolstered by the additions of highly-coveted cornerbacks Nnamdi Asomugha and Dominique Rodgers Cromartie, defensive linemen Cullen Jenkins and Jason Babin, and running back Ronnie Brown, among others. The Cowboys, meanwhile, were the trendy pick for a second place finish and a wildcard playoff spot, a belief grounded mostly in the hopes that Jason Garrett, in his first full year as head coach, could push the right buttons and harness that team?s big-time potential into a deep playoff run?that he could, you know, do everything that Wade Phillips couldn?t do.

The Giants' sixth-round selection in this year's NFL Draft - UAB OT Matt McCants - is another one of GM Jerry Reese's possible "finds". Reese and his staff have a penchant for brushing aside shallow collegiate production and projecting what certain prospects can achieve at the pro level.

The team is excited about McCants' upside. They see him as a tackle of the future. AT 6'5" and 315 lbs with long arms, McCants projects to be a D'Brickashaw Ferguson-type that has both size and mobility. Whether he blossoms into that projection remains to be seem. The Giants have been rarely wrong on guys like these.

The Giants had another draft that could help the franchise to a third Super Bowl title in this young century. From Jared Sherman of CSNPhilly......

"The reigning Super Bowl champs know a thing or two about drafting. The core of their team is built from a slew of savvy drafts over the years. Whether it's trading for Eli Manning, taking a bit of risk on a "toolsy" DE like Jason Pierre-Paul, or finding significant contributors in the middle and late rounds -- Justin Tuck, Brandon Jacobs, Ahmad Bradshaw, and Mario Manningham -- the Giants work the draft as well as anyone in the NFL." Veteran blogger and lifelong Giants season ticket holder Craig Santucci knows how pivotal fourth round draft picks can be for a team. This year the Giants had two of them: TE Adrien Robinson of Cincinnati and Auburn OL Brandon Mosely. He is leery about how Robinson will turn out, but Mosely - who was taken after Robinson - seems to be more of a refined product.

Giants GM Jerry Reese on Robinson: "We really think this guy has a huge up-side. He is a big, big man; long arms. He didn?t catch a lot of balls for them. But he is kind of a late bloomer who has really come on. And we think this guy is kind of a JPP of tight ends. We like these kind of people. We will get Mike Pope involved with this guy. Giants first-round draft choice David Wilson was brought in to replace the loss of Brandon Jacobs and the potential loss of the often-injured Ahmad Bradshaw. He could end up being neither of those two. Pro Football Weekly's Eric Edholm believes Wilson could end up being more like Tiki Barber....

The Giants? drafting of first-round pick RB David Wilson from Virginia Tech makes their backfield picture ? as well as perhaps their special teams ? a little clearer.

The free-agent loss of Brandon Jacobs, flawed as he might have been, opened up an important job in the RB rotation, although Wilson is by no means a Jacobs doppelganger. In an interview with WFAN radio, Wilson described himself as a hybrid of the Ravens? Ray Rice and the Texans? Arian Foster, but we hear some Giants people see a little Tiki Barber in Wilson, too.

The Giants had one of the league?s most prolific offenses last season, ranking ninth in points per game (24.6), fifth in pass yards per game (295.9) and eighth in total yards per game (385.1). These metrics are impressive, but let us not ignore Big Blue?s putrid rushing yards per game average (82.1), good for last in all of football.

The departure of Brandon Jacobs?and his accompanying 152 carries and 571 rushing yards?to the San Francisco 49ers only figured to further debilitate an already feeble ground game, leaving the Giants in danger of reclaiming their spot as the league?s worst rushing team. Help arrived at approximately 11:30 p.m. Thursday night in the form of 5-foot-9, 205-pound running back David Wilson, a shifty speedster from Virginia Tech who immediately slides into the No. 2 spot on the Giants running back depth chart.

on TE Adrien Robinson:

Adrien Robinson is a guy who we really like athletically. He did an outstanding job in his workout. Doesn't have much to show for his collegiate career - not many catches. Was a move guy - did some good things with the move action. Blocked in space pretty well. Wasn't used that much as a receiver. We do think he has those qualities, but he's a big kid. Initially, the best thing for New York Giants fans about NFL commissioner Roger Goodell introducing their team?s first-round pick in this year?s NFL draft on Thursday night, was hearing Goodell specifically emphasize that it was the ?Super Bowl champion? Giants picking 32nd in the first round ? something that drew cheers from Giants fans in attendance at Radio City Music Hall before Goodell was able to announce the last selection of the evening.

Yet beyond that, is the realization that the Giants seemed to have helped themselves not once, but twice with the single selection of running back David Wilson with the final pick of the opening round.

A speedy and dynamic player with big-play ability, Wilson not only broke out as a star back during a superb junior season at Virginia Tech last year, but he?s also a proven kick return threat that year in and year out, was often usually lacking in a big way with the Giants.

It's Draft Day folks. For football freaks this is like Christmas morning. I hope all of you have had enough sleep last night, because the next two nights, you will get little.

Unless the Giants do something dramatic tonight, they will be making their selection ?- No. 32 overall - around 11:30pm. They will be making two more selections tomorrow night. Their second round pick is #63 overall (due to forfeited pick by New Orleans) and they select next to last in Round Three. That pick is #94 overall (Oakland used their selection in the supplemental draft last spring to select QB Terrelle Pryor, but were later awarded a third-round compensatory selection - #95).

In Round Four, the Giants have two selections: their own (127) and a compensatory (131). They traded their fifth-round pick (No. 167) to Cincinnati for LB Keith Rivers. They have one selection in each of the final rounds - Nos. 201 and 239.
