2012 NFL Free Agency

The Giants officially announced the signing of CB Antwaun Molden this afternoon. They actually came to terms with him last week, but decided to hold off on the announcement until today.

The former Houston Texan and New England Patriot is glad to get a chance to compete for a roster spot with the defending Super Bowl champs.

"It's exciting to be here," Molden said on the Giants' website today. "I like everything about this situation. I like the coaching staff. When I was coming out of college I liked the Giants - I liked the defense, I liked the players. They recruit good players. There's a team-first attitude. They're selfless. That's the blueprint for success and you see that here. That's what I want to be a part of."

The Giants have been active, regardless of what people think. They have made the pertinent moves (for now) that will set their roster up for the draft. They will sign a few UDFAs the Monday after the draft and then perhaps invite a few more veterans to camp.

As for the draft, I keep reading about the Giants addressing needs through the draft. They're right. The Giants will be addressing some needs through the draft. But not 2012 needs. They draft for the future, and if a rookie can produce sooner, it's a plus...

The NFL has become so popular it has begun dominating the headlines even during the time of year reserved for the NCAA Tournament, spring training and the NBA and the NHL stretch runs.

It doesn't hurt that one of the game's most famous and prolific players (Peyton Manning) displaced the world's most popular athlete (Tim Tebow) and then handed down it's stiffest punishments in perhaps it's 92-year history to the New Orleans Saints over what has become known as "Bounty-gate".

NFL free agency has been slow moving (especially if you're a Giant fan), but there have been some teams that have bettered their lot. The NBC Sports gang believes Denver and Buffalo are two team that have made major strides thus far....

Here?are some responses to questions you guys sent into us.....

On replacing WR Mario Manningham, who signed two-year deal with the 49ers this weekend...

The Giants have several in-house options when it comes to backfilling his spot, but don't discount them adding to this group through the draft. Domenik Hixon is back and is healthy; Jerrel Jernigan and Ramses Barden were both third round picks and will have to play themselves off the roster.

Peyton Manning (or, as he's known in these parts as Eli's older brother) will decide where he is going to play this year on either Monday or Tuesday. The three finalists are Denver, Tennessee and San Francisco.

Manning worked out for the Niners and Broncos this week and will do so for the Titans today. The Broncos appear to be the best fit for him, even if it means displacing the iconic Tim Tebow. ?Broncos EVP John Elway has a close relationship with Peyton and has been publicly non-committal towards Tebow.

Tennessee is driving hard to the hoop on Peyton, but they have Matt Hasselbeck already under contract. He's not a backup. Not yet, anyway. They'd have to either trade or release him. Manning has ties to the state of Tennessee having starred at UT in the 1990's. Owner Bud Adams wants Manning bad and is apparently offering Peyton a lifetime contract.

You gotta like what GM Jerry Reese has done thus far in only two days here. He's re-signed CB Terrell Thomas and QB David Carr and brought in a young, promising TE in Martellus Bennett. He's got more to do, but the roster is filling up nicely thus far. If this keeps up, they can go into the draft with clear heads....

WR Mario Manningham has not drawn much interest thus far as the free agent pool was chock full of bigger fish at WR. He is allegedly on the radar of three teams: Miami, San Francisco and Buffalo.

It's the little moves that make Jerry Reese and his staff so good. They don't put all their eggs in one basket. They look for players that fit their system and bring in as many of them as they can.

Today, they made two such moves when they came to terms with free agent offensive?tackle Joel Reinders and tight end Larry Donnell.

Donnell is a Grambling State product who went undrafted last April and failed to catch on with an NFL team. He is 6"6", 270lbs and is clearly a project for TE coach Mike Pope to sink his teeth into. Donnell was originally a quarterback and was moved to TE.

Brandon Jacobs appears headed to the Jets or some other team after being released by the Giants last Friday. The team currently has Ahmad Bradshaw as their top ballcarrier, with little used DJ Ware and Da'Rel Scott as the primary backups.

It makes sense for the Giants to bring in a low-cost solution to replace him. There are several veterans that would fit the bill, but would they actually sign for less than the Giants had offered Jacobs (approx. less than $2 million)?

Today is the day. At 4pm, Free Agent Frenzy will engulf the NFL and it's fans. The Giants have 19 unsigned free agents and plenty of holes to fill up.

Their major challenge still remains money. Or lack of it. They have little room to work with under the salary cap and GM Jerry Reese has to get very creative this spring.

Will the Giants bring back TE Kevin Boss and WR Steve Smith? How about Terrell Thomas, Aaron Ross and Jonathan Goff? Who will Mario Manningham end up with? Or Brandon Jacobs? Stay tuned.

We're still trying to figure out how much under the cap the Giants are right now. Apparently, we're not alone (see article below). This seems to be the task du jour of every Giants beat writer and blogger with a heartbeat.

The Giants will enter free agency tomorrow with a quick agenda to sign some of thei own UFAs back. Not sure if they plan on bringing back Aaron Ross or if they can afford to re-sign Dave Tollefson.

Look for Jerry Reese to continue to fine tune the cap by restructuring a few more players, contracts.

As suspected, with one day remaining before teams can begin negotiating with UFAs, the NFL stated the 2012 salary cap will be $120.6 million, a slight increase ($ 225k) over last season.

We reported the Giants are approximately $8 million under that number after redoing Eli's contract and releasing Brandon Jacobs. According to the website spotrac.com, the Giants have 43 players under contracts totaling $112.3 million.

Some newspapers and websites are reporting different numbers. From Bart Hubbuch of the Post:

It would make for a nice story. TE Dallas Clark playing catch for years with Peyton Manning in Indianapolis, then moving on to New York to do the same with Eli.

Clark was cut by the Colts this week and will be available to negotiate with any team beginning this Tuesday. In normal circumstances, a team experiencing a dearth at TE (such as the Giants) would be chomping at the bit to sign him.

These aren't normal circumstances, though. First off, the Giants don't have much maneuverability under the cap and if they did, they wouldn't dedicate much money to a player coming off back-to-back injury-shortened seasons.

Brandon Jacobs' release by the Giants was not a shock to us here at GFB, but it has set off a discussion of where the veteran RB will play next. The 29-year-old Jacobs played seven years for the Blue, leaving as the 4th leading rusher in Giant history (4849 yds) and the franchise leader in rushing TDs (56).

The upside for any team that signs Jacobs is his passion and potential to scare the bejeezus out of defense with his size (6'4", 265lbs). The downside is, as we all know, is his inconsistent effort to utilize that size in short yardage situations.

Nevertheless, there will be many suitors vying for Jacobs' services. The Jets will certainly be one of them. They seem to have a few other issues to address this offseason, but the Jets will surely take a look and Jacobs will consider - and even take - their offer to keep his family in the area.

The Giants have been in the NFL spotlight since last December, capturing the imagination of football fan everywhere with an incredible Super Bowl championship run. Players such as Victor Cruz, Jason Pierre-Paul and Hakeem Nicks have become household names practically overnight.

The leader of the Giants - QB Eli Manning - has been one of the constants for the Giants - and the NFL -over the past five years, a span in which the club has won two Super Bowls with Eli being named MVP in both games. Many NFL teams are seeing that you can't win the Super Bowl unless you have an elite QB under center.

The past decade has proven that. The league's upper crust of the QBs (Eli, Tom Brady, Ben Roethlisberger, Aaron Rodgers, Drew Brees and Eli's brother, Peyton) have all led their teams to Super Bowl titles at least once.

Ross Tucker and former Giant star WR Amani Toomer of NBC Sports discuss this year's WR free agent class. One of the topics? Where Mario Manningham stacks up against the other free agent wideouts this March.

Is he a No. 1 receiver? Any team that has done their homework knows that he isn't. Tucker points out Manningham's inconsistent career thus far including the injuries and mental lapses that have held him back from reaching the next level. Both he an Amani feel Mario will have wait behind the likes of Marques Colston, Pierre Garcon, Brandon Lloyd and others.

They are right. Mario is not a No. 1 receiver, but as our colleague at ESPN, Colin Cowherd, always says we are 'prisoners of the moment' in America and Mario's recent success may garner him a nice deal. The reality is that some team will overpay.

March is here! Free agency is less than two weeks away and everyone is playing the GM game this time of year. Last year, we didn't get to do this due to the NFL lockout, but this year is different. There will be a glut of free agents flying around and teams can dramatically change their rosters before draft day (April 26) - something they couldn't do in 2011.

What will the Giants' do? Not much, unless they can free up some cap space exponentially between now and March 13th - the day the NFL's version of March Madness begins.

Here is the free agency timeline for the next to weeks (thanks to Adam Caplan of The Sideline View):

Last year, the Giants had to rely on players to take pay cuts and others to move on to new teams in order for them to fit all of their championship-level talent under the roof at TIMEX.

This year, they may just have to do it again. According to our friends at Pro Football Talk, ?the Giants are only $1.06 million under the cap right now. This does not include any free agents who are coming off the books on March 13.

The Giants have 22 (yes, twenty-two) players who will become UFAs next month. That's quite a high number for a team that just won the Super Bowl. ?Many are backup players, but some are key contributors: OT Kareem McKenzie, WR Mario Manningham, CB Aaron Ross, ?P Steve Weatherford, CB Terrell Thomas, S Deon Grant, TE Bear Pascoe and DE Dave Tollefson.
