On MSG, after game five of the Stanley Cup Final, Joe Micheletti said that the Rangers run to the Stanley Cup Final was an "extremely valuable" learning experience and the Rangers young players like Derek Stepan, Chris Kreider and Carl Hagelin will get better because of it.

Micheletti also referenced how Mike Keenan said during his week on MSG that the Rangers were a young team that was learning what it meant to play in the Stanley Cup Final. He said that one lesson learned is how to play in the third period and "they learned an awful lot playing."

Arthur Staple writes that the Rangers went as far as heart and effort could take them but lost to a team that specializes in "will" and wearing teams down. Staple says that with the Rangers heart, skill and goaltending they have the ingredients of a championship team and must learn from their experiences this year. (Newsday)

Following the season, Ryan McDonagh explained why he thought this Rangers team was able to make the run that they did.

McDonagh said, "there are no egos on this team, this group is all about finding ways to win. Everyone bought into their role, when we were on our game we were a tough team to beat and that is why everyone was excited." (Rangers)

Dominic Moore said recently that with Henrik Lundqvist in net and the Rangers depth at forward and defense, the team feels that they can build on this past season.

Gordie Clark said that he was glad to see the Rangers face Montreal in the Eastern Conference Final rather than Boston because the Bruins had been playing "scary" hockey over the last 30 games of the season. (Boston Herald)

Clark added that the Bruins had been good against the Rangers the past two seasons, "they kicked the snot out of us for two years," and he was happy to see Montreal after the Rangers had been "smoked" by the Bruins recently. (Boston Herald)

On May 19th, Pierre McGuire was on TSN 1050 Radio and was asked about the day the Rangers acquired Ryan McDonagh from the Montreal Canadiens.

Pierre said, "one of the silliest trades that ever took place. I was sitting in the lobby of the Westin hotel about to go on Montreal radio and I let them have it on the radio, it was just such a silly trade. It just shows you that there are certain people, not all because I know some people who were really upset about the deal, there were certain people who didn't do enough work and evaluate the prospect properly. The Rangers were just salivating and licking their lips. The day before the deal happened one of the Rangers scouts game me a call and said 'we got a chance to get Ryan McDonagh.' I said "are you sure about that' he said 'yea" and I said "if you can do it, do it, get it done.' And he said "we are well on our way.' I was shocked, "utterly shocked."

He added, "those were the days that they were trying to get shortcuts and by getting Gomez they could get Gionta and by getting Gionta they could get Cammalleri but that isn't how you build your team. The Rangers tried that for years, it doesn't work."

Over the weekend, Rangers GM Glen Sather said that it was going to be tough for the Rangers to bring back the same team as last year because of the low cap and because the UFA Rangers are asking for a lot.

Rangers Assistant GM Jeff Gorton was asked about the potential loss of players said, "A lot of these guys we brought in, we have a good scouting staff that have found players and if holes are created because guys leave for more money or more term somewhere else, I have a lot of confidence, we have a lot of confidence in the room that we will be able to find those players again." The Rangers enter free agency with around $23 million in cap space but with Brian Boyle, Benoit Pouliot, Dominic Moore and Anton Stralman as unrestricted free agents.

Derick Brassard, Chris Kreider, Mats Zuccarello and John Moore are restricted free agents and Glen Sather said yesterday that he and his staff are trying to figure out how to best keep the team that won the Eastern Conference together.

Sather said that it would be tough to accomplish that though because the salary cap didn't rise as high as he hoped and because of the expectation that the players have of getting big raises because the team went to the Stanley Cup Final.

Pierre McGuire was asked on TSN 1050 on Monday morning what the market for Brad Richards is likely to be.

Pierre said, "Depends what his price point is, it does. For a lot of these guys who are older, that have had good careers but you can see they are on the downside of things, what their price point is will be the magic number for a lot of teams. If Brad prices himself right and he is dealing with some real professionals at Newport Sports with Pat Morris and Don Meehan and Mark Guy and the whole team, they do a great job.

He added, "If they price point him properly there will be significant interest because he is a specialist on the PP that can help your team. If you are looking for a lot of 5 on 5 stuff it will be problematic but if you are counting on specialty points, especially on the PP, it can work. "

Larry Brooks says that the Rangers are likely to promote Derick Brassard from third-line center to second-line center in their quest to replace Brad Richards. (NY Post)

Brooks says that this is the likely route the Rangers will take unless they don't feel they can win a Stanley Cup with Brassard as a top-six center. He says that there is no indication that the organization feels this way, especially after Brassard has performed well in his two playoff appearances with the Rangers. (NY Post)

Of all the centers who may be available, Paul Stastny, Jason Spezza, Joe Thornton or Eric Staal, Brooks thinks that Staal would be the best fit for the Rangers as someone who can match up against the "big boys" of the West. (NY Post)

11:48PM: Quotes from the Rangers:

Alain Vigneault on the difficulty of responding to the first goal of the game??Well, I know there wasn't a lot of shots on net. But we felt we played a real good period, the pace was good, there wasn't a lot of room, both teams were battling real hard for ice. That was their only chance in the first period. We out-chanced them 4-1. We had some real good looks. Stuff like that happens. Effectively we came out hard in the second and we kept trying.?

Henrik Lundqvist on tonight?s game??Well you try to stay positive right now, but it?s tough, it?s really tough. We are doing a lot good things, but you look at the goals and we put two in our own net and then just a tough play on the third one. At some point, you are going to need some puck luck and we don?t have any right now. It feels like they have all of it. We always talk about how you have to earn that puck luck, but I think we are working really hard and doing a lot of good things but when they score goals like that when it feels like we are right there and doing the right things, obviously it?s mentally challenging to try to overcome that first goal. And I think we played good in the second and they get that fluky bounce again on the second. It doesn?t matter what you think you deserve out there, you just have to find a way to win games and that?s what they have been doing. We can sit here and say we?ve played really well but at the end it?s about finding ways to win, and we haven?t done that.?

Pierre McGuire was on TSN 1050 on Friday?morning and was asked about the Rangers, game two and what the Rangers need to do better.

Pierre said that the Rangers need to score more than 3 goals and "the biggest thing is that there isn't a lot of room for error and everyone knows it having watched game one. The Rangers were pretty good through the first 40 but couldn't hold the lead and that is problematic as you go along. The coaching staff is aware, the players are aware and you almost have no room for error, you need to be almost letter perfect."

"I think this is far from over, you still aren't in trouble until you lose on home ice. The Rangers can be down 0-2 but why not hold serve. The Kings were down 3-0 vs San Jose and lost on home ice but found a way to win. LA had to go into Chicago and win a game seven on the road. Everybody is pontificating that they will wipe the floor with the Rangers but who knows, let the games play out."

Pierre McGuire was on TSN 1050 this morning to talk about game one between the Rangers and Kings.

Pierre said that it's tough to have a speed game when you are getting hit so much and if the margin is 2-1 it's "tough." Cycle plays off of faceoffs, simple things that sound easy but they are so refined and no drop off from line one to four.

Pierre McGuire was on TSN 1050 this morning and was asked what he thought would happen tonight in game six between the Rangers and Canadiens.

Pierre said, "I think it's going to be tough for Montreal, I hope this series goes seven, but I think this will be tough for Montreal only because the Rangers, I believe, because they are a more mature team, have learned their lesson. I was with Marty St. Louis last night at an arena near our house, he lives pretty close to where I live and his little boy was at the rink and my little guy was there and we were just shooting the breeze and, again, he said that 'we didn't play real well last night and we will be ready to go tomorrow and we are a mature team' and I agree with him. They are a mature team, much more of a mature team than people think and i think that is one thing thing will give them an advantage tonight."

Martin St. Louis on the game winning goal??Good play on the wall by Richie (Brad Richards) to keep the puck in, and obviously Hags (Carl Hagelin) being in good defensive position, also offensive position to be able to slide it over to me. I felt I had room, and I tried to trust what I saw, and obviously I?ve gone to that side quite a bit that last few games and he?s made some good saves on me. Sometimes you just have to keep trusting what you see and I was fortunate to get it by him.?

Carl Hagelin on the team??I think for us it has been key all year, just to take it day by day. We are obviously up 3-1, but we know how this can turn if we don?t do the things we need to do. Our focus now is on the next game and to play Ranger hockey.?

12:02AM: Quotes via the Rangers:

  • Henrik Lundqvist on moving on from tonight?s game??It?s going to be tough for a couple hours but then you have to let it go. That?s part of playing in the playoffs, short memory, and win or lose you have to move on. Again, we did so many good things but it?s about winning, finding ways to win games. We had our chances to put this game away the way we were playing, so we just have to continue, I think, with our game plan. I thought the way we were playing was really good. It?s just that second goal put us in a tough spot. Obviously we came back, then it?s just tough luck on that goal.?
  • Brad Richards on tying the game late in the third period??We were definitely confident. It was a big goal. It?s tough right now, obviously, we went out there with other intentions. That?s the way hockey goes sometimes, but you have to live with it, clear your head up, move on, battle hard the next day and get back to work.?
  • Ryan McDonagh on tonight?s game??I thought for the most part we really competed hard. We put a lot of pucks on the net, which we talked about doing. He (Dustin Tokarski) saw a lot of pucks too, so maybe one thing we can do is take away his eyes. You saw that last game he didn?t see some of the shots. We?ll be shocked here tonight, but obviously we won?t have any let down for the next game. It?s a new series and we feel like we want to get back to playing the strength of our game.?

Guys within the room make sure that the standards that we set are upheld all the time, that the commitment that is needed on a daily basis, that is the veteran players who are extension of coaches and they know what coaches want and they have to make sure that it gets done and I have to say, we brought in Marty, lost our captain but other guys stepped to the front and assumed bigger roles in the leadership and then in this series, we said we needed a lot of bus drivers and had a lot of guys driving the bus."

Brian Boyle said on MSG that the Rangers leaders did a great job of getting everyone to buy in and get on the same page.
