2013 NFL free agency NFL

There seems to be ongoing confusion regarding the NFL's compensatory draft pick allotment process. The formula used for determining if teams are eligible for compensation remains a vague, arbitrary exercise that is applied on a case-by-case basis.

The official explanation from the league is as follows:

Under the rules for compensatory draft selections, a team losing more or better?compensatory free agents?than it acquires in the previous year is eligible to receive?compensatory draft picks.

Well, another piece of the puzzle solved. Kim Jones of the NFL Network is reporting the Giants and OL Kevin Boothe have reached an agreement on a one-year contract....

From Rotoworld: Along with LT Will Beatty, Boothe is the second in-house lineman the Giants have re-signed this offseason. The G-Men could return their entire offensive line for 2013 depending on what they do with RT David Diehl. Boothe underwhelmed as a pass blocker last season, but was sturdy in the run game and wasn't penalized. Boothe will turn 30 in July.

Contrary to public perception, the Giants have been busy in free agency. They just move at their own pace. Little moves here and there to supplement their core. In the past, they have made some under-the-radar moves that worked out well. Last year, they found S Stevie Brown and OT Sean Locklear. Have they found some more gems this year...?

Free agents acquired by the Giants

DT Cullen Jenkins 3/10/2013: Signed a three-year, $8 million contract. The deal contains $3 million guaranteed, including a $2 million signing bonus. 2013: $1.1 million, 2014: $2.45 million, 2015: $2.2 million. Basically traded him for Chris Canty, who got a similar deal from Baltimore. Not a bad player, but not the run-stuffer they need.?

Former Giants RB Ahmad Bradshaw is apparently getting his first bites at the free agent apple...

https://twitter.com/AdamSchefter/status/313392235452461056

From Rotoworld: They're the first teams Bradshaw has been linked to since being released by the Giants last month. Bradshaw (foot surgeries) was cleared to begin visiting teams two weeks ago. Both Green Bay and Pittsburgh could use a jolt of talent in the running game, and Bradshaw ? despite his injury history ? is easily the top remaining free-agent back. He could soon start lining up visits.

The Giants got busy this weekend in free agency by signing one player (LB Dan Connor) and coming to agreements with two others (WR Louis Murphy and TE Brandon Myers). Murphy and Connor agreed to one-year deals and it's being reported that Myers' deal is also for one-year ($$$ details to come).

The Giants have now signed seven veterans from other teams this March: the above three, DT Cullen Jenkins (3 years, $8 mil), K Josh Brown, CB Aaron Ross and S Ryan Mundy. The last three all were signed to one-year deals.

In February, they signed K David Bueller to a one-year contract.

Some of the Giants' departing UFAs they chose not pursue are having a difficult time finding suitors. DE Osi Umenyiora, K Lawrence Tynes, OL Kevin Boothe and WR Ramses Barden have garnered little to no interest from teams. LB Chase Blackburn had been rumored to be on Dallas' docket, but that talk has subsided the past 48 hours.

Osi has claimed he will be the Defensive Player of the Year this season. That's not going to be easy to do from his couch. It was rumored the Falcons were "keenly interested" in Osi, but that was before free agency began. Umenyiora's name has not been mentioned to be on anyone's radar since free agency opened on Tuesday afternoon. Could he eventually end up back here? Certainly, but it will have to be a very team-friendly deal.

Boothe is on the Giants' shopping list, but his price is probably still too high. Jason LaCanfora reported yesterday the Giants were one of four teams vying for Boothe's services. The Cardinals, Panthers and Jets were also looking at him, but the Jets signed Willie Colon yesterday, so they may have cooled.

I don't know about you, but I would sleep better at nights if the Giants had better cover guys in their secondary. They are bringing back Aaron Ross, I hear. That doesn't really do much to ease my anxiety....

It was understood at the beginning of the free agency period that began Tuesday afternoon that many of the top-tier CBs would get gobbled up in the first few hours. It's Thursday morning and only three of Rotoworld's top 12 corners have been signed to contracts:
