During the press conference to announce Alain Vigneault as head coach of the Rangers, Glen Sather said that the organization had a list of 13 candidates to replace John Tortorella.

Sather said that six candidates were interviewed. Four were interviewed on the phone and two, Mark Messier and Alain Vigneault, were interviewed in person.

When asked why and how the list was cut down or why not all candidates were interviewed, Sather joked that he had a lot of people send in resumes to coach the Rangers but there are certain qualifications that are needed. He added "I thought Stan Fischler was going to send in his, not to say that Stan couldn't be a good coach."

In a post to twitter, Andrew Gross writes that unless Glen Sather is sold on the idea of Mark Messier or Lindy Ruff becoming coach, the Rangers should scoop up Alain Vigneault as quick as they can.

The Dallas Stars are also very interested in Vigneault.

Larry Brooks writes in the NY Post, that if Glen Sather believes Messier can lead the Rangers to the Stanley Cup over the next couple of seasons, Henrik Lundqvist's prime, the way the public thinks won't sway his decision one way or the other.

Pierre McGuire was a guest on Mike Francesa today and said that Alain Vigneault and Lindy Ruff are both outstanding coaches and candidates for the Rangers.

McGuire said he is very familiar with both coaches bodies of work and that he worked with Vigneault when both were assistants in Florida and he coached against Lindy Ruff when Ruff was an assistant with the Panthers.

He added that he would love to be inside the room when Mark Messier gets interviewed because he wants to see what Messier would say when asked about his approach to coaching.

On Saturday, Ryan Rishaug of TSN noted that the NHL doesn't like it when teams announce big news during the Stanley Cup Final.

He noted that this could have been part of the reason why the Oilers made their coaching announcement on Saturday.

The Stanley Cup Final starts tomorrow and a potential game seven would take place on June 26th.

10:36AM Larry Brooks tweets:

  • Told that there is nothing to speculation that Sather is stepping down as Rangers' GM.
  • Nothing has changed in two weeks since Sather announced intention to remain as GM during conference call with media.
9:20AMJames Murphy, of ESPN Boston, wrote on his personal website that an NHL source as well as a Rangers team source is telling him that Rangers GM Glen Sather is considering stepping down from that position and letting someone else take over the player personnel decisions.

Murphy says that Sather would retain his role as President of the organization and would appoint either Jim Schoenfeld, Assistant General Manager, Player Personnel, or Doug Risebrough, "Hockey consultant", to take over as GM.

Rangers management is at Glen Sather's house in La Quinta, California to conduct their annual organizational meetings.

Some personnel decisions expected to come up during the meetings, according to Larry Brooks, are whether or not the Rangers will use a compliance buyout on Brad Richards and what their plan of attack with Ryane Clowe will be.

It is expected that Glen Sather and Rangers management will start going through the questionnaires that were mailed to coaching candidates and likely start interviewing them this week.

Last night on Hockey Night in Canada, during the Hot Stove segment, former Rangers goalie Glenn Healy explained where the Rangers are right now in their search for a head coach.

Healy said "the Rangers are going through the process. They are meeting in California, they have sent out questionnaires to their candidates about their team, not the one that Bryan Trottier did that was 500 pages, but something like that."

He added that Alain Vigneault is high on their list and that they have or are going to get permission to speak with Lindy Ruff.

On TSN Drive with Dave Naylor yesterday, Darren Dreger said that Glen Sather has sent out questionnaires to a list of coaching candidates that could be as high as ten.

Dreger says, "all coaches were asked to fill out a brief questionnaire, I don't know how many questions, I was told it was three or four pages long and there were no promises. That is how Slats is weeding through some of the individuals he is not that familiar with. I am not suggesting that he isn't going to interview Dallas Eakins but I know that before they get to that point they are going to gather all of these questionnaires."

He adds that everyone in Rangers management is in California and preparing to start organizational meetings on Monday. They are expected to start going through the questionnaires during those meetings and set up their interview plan from there.

Tim, Jeff, Craig: If Ruff and Vigneault were fired, how come the Rangers need permission to talk to them?

Adam Rotter: While we refer to these people as having been fired, it's not technically true. Vigneault, Ruff and John Tortorella were all relieved of their coaching duties which means they are still employees of the organization, but no longer in the position of head coach. The Islanders relieved Scott Gordon of his coaching responsibilities in 2011 and then put him to work as a scout as he finished up his contract. Before he left the Maple Leafs to take a scouting job with Anaheim, Brian Burke was relieved of his duties as GM but stayed on in a Senior Advisory role. Anaheim asked permission to speak with Burke and then hired him to be a scout. Because they are still team employees, the Rangers could get hit with tampering charges for talking to Ruff or Vigneault without permission. The same will happen when John Tortorella becomes a candidate to coach somewhere else.

In The Hockey News, Ken Campbell writes that it would be quite a big disaster for the Rangers if they hired Mark Messier or Wayne Gretzky to be their head coach.

Campbell writes that the lack of experience both men have would lead to a bad situation, "coaching is a craft that is learned over years of hard work and experimentation. You spend years learning which buttons to push and you pick up intricacies of the game that none but the most trained eye can see. You get a feel for your players and your bench and you learn what it takes to gain an advantage over the opposition during the frenetic pace of a game."

Campbell says that the only way hiring Messier or Gretzky would work is if they were figurehead coaches and the Rangers paid an exorbitant amount for an associate coach to do the actual coaching.

On Hockey Central at Noon, Nick Kypreos and Doug MacLean spoke about the Rangers coaching?vacancy.

Kypreos said, "If they weren't interested we would have heard by now. When there was no follow up to Wayne Gretzky saying no, that was the day it became Glen Sather's biggest headache, nightmare. You can tell Dallas Eakins no...... but to tell Messier or Gretzky no is another story."

Doug MacLean, a former coach and GM, said that this is turning into a big headache for Sather and that he isn't sure Sather wants either one of them to be coach.

10:29AM:?Andrew Gross writes at Ranger Rants of the bind that Glen Sather is now in with the notion that Mark Messier is interested in becoming the next head coach of the Rangers.

He notes that in the view of many fans, the choice is Mark Messier vs the field and it may be hard to pick against a person that is held in as much regard as Messier is.

Recently on Sportsnet, Nick Kypreos spoke about how the next coach of the Rangers needs to understand the direction that the entire organization is heading in, starting with the future of upper management.

He said, "If you are going to consider a Messier, Gretzky or Leetch, you have to be crystal clear on the direction that you are personally going to go. Sather has held these cards so close to his vest and these guys want to know where the future is going. Is Glen Sather going to be involved for the next five/seven/ten years? He is 70 years old and at some point you want to groom somebody to come over."

Doug MacLean said that he thought that role, replacing Sather, was the one best suited for Messier.

In the NY Post, Larry Brooks writes that Glen Sather and Jim Dolan can't pick a new coach based on persona or the boost in excitement it would bring.

He writes, "the charge here is to hire the coach who will give the Rangers their best opportunity to win a Stanley Cup before the window closes on the prime of Henrik Lundqvist, not to mention this particular core of players that could break apart via free agency next summer."

Brooks adds that the Rangers aren't some "low-budget operation" that is in need of credibility or brand building excitement.
