New Rangers captain Ryan McDonagh was on NHL Live on Tuesday (NHL.com)
  • On being captain, "it's a tremendous honor for sure, you look at the history and the list of captains beforehand is a great list to be part of and hopefully I can continue to live up to the tradition they put ahead of me."
  • How did you get the news, "we were going through training camp there and coach AV asked if I would come in on our off-day when we were done with the preseason games and we chatted. He offered me the job and asked if I would be willing to take it and accept it. We went over what he expects of me and the team going forward and he wants me to be the guy to put forth a good example every day."
  • Who did you learn from, "my very first year in the league, Chris Drury was our captain and we made the playoffs and he grabbed some young guys and told us that we never knew when we would get our opportunities to compete for the Stanley Cup and it was kind of eye-opening to hear that message, a veteran player who was a well known player and it was a great lesson to learn. When Cally took over, you could see everyday the effort he put forth to help this team win and it's something that I can use and try and emulate and even Brad Richards when we traded Cally, Brad took over the room and his experience in the playoff run, everything he was saying was coming true and he was vocally very good in the room and it's something I will try and do as well."
  • On AV's expectations for him, "He didn't go into anything specific, he just wanted me to be myself, the reason he was offering it to me was because of who I am and to come to the rink with a great attitude and willing to get better and try to help my teammates get better and focus on the main goal which is to win as many games as possible and give ourselves a chance to compete for the cup and change the ending from last year."
  • On this season, "just to focus on the task at hand everyday. We weren't thinking big picture last year, we were just trying to get better and practice everyday. We prepared and changed up a few things and put guys in positions to succeed and on this team guys accept their roles and try to play it as best they can."
  • On the start of this year compared to last year, "Not having to travel is a little nicer for sure but most guys would say that they are more confident going into this year, having the same staff for a year and everybody knows our routine at the rink and practices and that helps you prepare mentally and physically and for us, like I said, our coaches put us in roles to succeed and everyone should know what he expects of us and us of them. We just focus on playing and playing well."
  • How does Henrik look, "he is pretty sharp, his last preseason game we had to count on him late in the shootout and he was standing tall there and it's the same old Henrik for us. Focused and hates to get scored on and really energetic and enthused about this year."
  • Does anything stand out from last year, "I think just how hard you have to work to give yourselves and opportunity. We didn't accomplish what we wanted in the final but we learned a lot what it takes to take that next step and the coaches have addressed what they think will help us take that step and it's so fun when you work hard and accomplish those things and it makes you want to work harder."

9/21/14 | 9:45AM: Ryan McDonagh said yesterday that the coaching staff "can't make a wrong decision" when it comes to picking a captain because the Rangers leadership group is so solid. (NYR)

He adds, "even if you are not one of the guys who will have a letter, we need 20 something guys to be leaders in their own way, even if it's a small part, do the little things off the ice and cracking jokes and keeping spirits up. Whatever happens this group will have solid leadership." (NYR)

Marty St. Louis spoke about leadership and said, "you don't need a letter on your jersey to be a leader. You don't want to force leadership, leadership comes natural with experience and it's something that is passed down and I played with some great leaders and now you get to be a leader and it's a comfortable position to be in. For me, letter or no letter I will be myself and I usually enjoy that part of the game. Not just be a talker but a listener."(Lohud, via Soundcloud)

Alain Vigneault spoke on Thursday about the qualities he wants the Rangers next captain to have. (via Lohud on Soundcloud)

Vigneault said that the important factors are:

  • "the power to influence. The captain has to have the power to influence his teammates in the right direction, by example, by the way he conducts himself."
  • "He also has to regroup the troops"
  • "He is an extension, with his assistants, of the coaching staff. The core values and standards we are setting when we aren't in the room, they are the ones who are pushing that and are making sure that everyone on our team is doing it the right way. That is what we are looking."
Vigneault said that the Rangers wouldn't name a captain until just before the season.

8:20AM: Pierre's exact quote on McDonagh was "If I were betting I would bet on Ryan McDonagh. Just having spent some time with Ryan last week and seeing how his teammates have really galvanized around him and talking with other Ranger players, older ones and younger ones, McDonagh seems to be the bridge between the older guys and the younger guys. There is a sense of maturity around McDonagh, he was drafted in 2007 and you can just sense it and feel it. He is a married guy, really serious, trains like a machine, has been in the Olympics, potential Norris Trophy winner, he is everything that you want and he communicates really well. I would say that he is the odds on favorite."

Glen Sather agreed and said on media day, ?he has been terrific and I think he is acting as captain, a leader in the room and on the ice, great guy. 4:29PM: Alain Vigneault said today (Lohud)

  • Has anyone emerged as a potential captain, "I have an idea where I am leaning but I won't share that with your today. I will let training camp unfold or maybe make the decision prior but I will talk to management, give them my thoughts on that and sometime next year we will make the announcement."
  • Do the players have some say in the captain decision, "I would say that I will seek feedback from a couple of the players and get everyone who is around our teams input. I am pretty sure we will come to a consensus."
3:52PM: Asked about possibly becoming the captain today, McDonagh said (Rangers):

Absolutely, I feel this year, the way that my play was escalating I felt my confidence go up as the year went on. I think when you are given more responsibility and step up and help our team win games, I think that helps guys believe and rally around you when you say stuff in the room and guys want to follow behind the thing with this team is that we have a bunch of leaders.

On Boomer and Carton this morning, Mark Messier was asked by Boomer Esiason if he thought McDonagh could be the next captain of the Rangers.

Messier responded by saying, "the only thing better than the deal that got McDonagh from Montreal is the contract they just signed him to. They got him at an unbelievable price for what he is growing into. To me Ryan McDonagh is the epitome of what a Ranger is, what a hockey player stands for. He plays every night, consistent, tough strong, durable. He brings offense and I look at him as a future Norris Trophy winner, a captain of the team, a leader in every way and you win championships with Ryan McDonagh. What an unbelievable deal it was for the Rangers."

McDonagh was endorsed by Rick Nash to be the next captain.
