2014 NFL Draft

Cornerback Jayron Hosley has been reinstated from the suspended list (Balzer, Sept. 26. Howard Balzer also reported the Giants received a roster exemption that will expire Monday.

Hosley was suspended in June for the first four regular season games for violating league?s substance abuse policy. Hosley was unable to benefit from a new league policy that resulted in shorter suspensions for similarly penalized players. That group included Giants guard Eric Herman, who wss reinstated and waived last week before rejoining the team's practice squad Monday.

With the Giants healthy in the secondary these days (Walter Thurmond aside), it's hard to think that Hosley will be placed on the roster. But releasing him seems like a waste, too. After all, he was a third-round pick in 2012 with a high ceiling. Many were mocking him as a late first, early second rounder before the draft.

The Giants enter Day Three of the NFL Draft having fortified some need areas: WR, C, and DT. Many question the choice of players to fill those needs, but that could be said for most teams this morning.

Today the Giants have four selections:

Round Four: Pick 13 (113)

I received an email from one of our readers that I feel must be addressed...

From Scott:?Anything come out yet about where the Giants had Zach Martin or Aaron Donald on their big board? Are you surprised they didn't go after one of them in round one?

No idea where those two were slotted on the Giants' board, but Jerry Reese did tell us that Odell Beckham Jr. was somewhere between 5-10 on their board. I am not surprised at all by this pick.

Yesterday, I spoke with one of this year's below the radar draftees - Vanderbilt WR Jordan Matthews. He is expected to be taken high in the draft, hence his presence in NYC today.

One problem, though, Matthews is kind of lost in the sauce behind flashier names such as Sammy Watkins, Mike Evans, Odell Beckham Jr., Marquise Lee and Brandin Cooks. Matthews says his game is very much like Green Bay's Jordy Nelson and the Saints' Marques Colston - two Super Bowl-winning players.

The Giants currently have the No. 12 overall selection in Thursday's NFL Draft, the first time they?ve held that pick since 1964 when they drafted RB Joe Don Looney out of the University of Oklahoma.

Looney never played for the Giants, he was traded before the season to the Baltimore Colts along with OL?Lou Kirouac and a 1965 sixth round pick for veteran DB Andy Nelson and receiver RC Owens. Both Owens and Nelson were out of football by 1965. Kirouac would play a season in Baltimore before joining the expansion Falcons in 1966.

None of that will mean anything come Thursday night.?The rumors are that teams are looking to trade up while others will be trading back.?The Giants appear to be content to let the draft come to them, as usual.

Charlie Campbell of WalterFootball.com posted his latest mock draft yesterday. These mocks get more interesting by the day. This one isn't too bad, especially if the Giants can land Jake Matthews in the first round. But truth be told, we need draft day to get here, pronto. Everyone's getting a little antsy. Here's Campbell's picks and analysis followed by my comments...

Round One: 12. OT Jake Matthews, Texas A&M

Campbell: "The Giants need to get Eli Manning straightened out and re-establish their run game. Thus, the organization continues the rebuilding of its weak offensive line. If New York drafts a left tackle, Will Beatty would move to right tackle and Justin Pugh would slide inside to guard where the team needs some youth. Matthews would be a great value and a big upgrade at left tackle."

Got a lot of mail about the draft the past few days, and instead of writing 35 feature pieces, I consolidated the questions in an effort to make things easier.

We've been hearing a lo about who will be there when the Giants select at No. 12. Let's rephrase the question: Who will NOT be there when the Giants select at No. 12?

DE Jadeveon Clowney, WR Sammy Watkins, OT Greg Robinson, LB Khalil Mack and OT Jake Matthews are certain to be gone early. OT Taylor Lewan is moving up, as are DT Aaron Donald and WR Mike Evans. I expect some trades, so it's hard to tell which teams move up and down and what they perceive as value at those positions.

The 2014 NFL Draft is loaded with talented young men and the Giants, selecting 12th overall, are in line to add several of them to their already revamped roster.

Since the mock draft season began in earnest after the Super Bowl, experts have mocked over two dozen different names to the Giants. But the facts haven't changed since last season. The Giants need to upgrade at several positions, mostly on the offensive side of the ball.

The NFL Draft is just one week away and the anticipation is greater than ever with the two additional weeks tacked on this year. BBB lead writer John Fennelly fields questions from readers regarding what the Giants will do with the 12th overall selection in the first round next Thursday.

James B: With all these teams looking for a QB in this year's draft, should the Giants think about trading Eli if a team in the top 6 want him? ?I know there are obstacles, but if he can bring in multiple picks especially one of the picks from 1-6, It would benefit the team plus losing Eli's contract would help as well. Depending on the pick you could end up with (Jake) Matthews or (Khalil) Mack or even (Sammy)Watkins plus still have the 12th pick. Which if you go Watkins you may still get (Taylor) Lewan or (Eric) Ebron with the 12th and then draft OL (Jawaun) James and one of the QBs in the second.

Trading Eli is not on the table right now. First off, the Giants have no intention of trading him. Many teams would love to have him, but his contract makes him virtually untradable. He has cap hits of $20.4 and $19.75 million over the next two seasons. Second, he's just had ankle surgery and is coming off his worst season. Third, none of the QBs in this draft are slam-dunk franchise QBs, so the Giants would be going from a 2X Super Bowl MVP to a rookie project at QB.

Having the 12th overall selection in the NFL Draft doesn't give you a lot of room to move. Trading up isn't a realistic option and trading back prevents you from getting a top talent.

In this draft, the Giants will be staring at several top talents at No. 12. Since the pool is so deep this year, they'll likely take the best player available and search to augment needs after that.

SNYGiants insider Ralph Vacchiano of the Daily News lists his 12 possibilities for the Giants at No. 12.

I'm not much for these "draft needs" pieces, unless they comprehensively address needs that can be filled by a can't-miss rookie in that coming season. My philosophy is fill your immediate needs in free agency and build through the draft.

If you're a GM and you draft based on immediate needs, you'll always be relegated to doing so. Your team will lose and you will be fired.

The Giants are selecting 12th overall in the upcoming NFL Draft, and who they choose, naturally, depends on who is available when their turn comes. That will be somewhere around 9:20-9:30 on Friday, May 8th if all goes well.

The eleven teams selecting in front of the Giants is bound to change, either in order of selection or teams. The Rams, who possess the second overall pick, are always looking to trade out. The Falcons are at No. 6 and want to get into the top three very badly. The 49ers don't pick until 30th, but then have five selections in the next 70.

In a normal year, the draft would be next Thursday, but due to a scheduling conflict with the venue (Radio City Music Hall) the draft was pushed back until May 8. The Hall had planned an Easter show featuring the Rockettes to run through the end of April.

Ironically that show has been scrapped, leaving football fans to go stir crazy unnecessarily for an extra two weeks. In the interim, mock drafts are getting a little crazy themselves. The more time passes, the more wild they're getting.

Players haven't gotten more or less talented over the additional time, it's just the pundits and media have been allotted more time to study the draft pool this year. Every day, sleepers are cropping up and this very deep draft is getting more and more interesting.

Here is my latest 2014 three-round draft for the Giants, trying to think like the unpredictable Jerry Reese would:

First Round #12 overall: Hasean Clinton-Dix, FS Alabama (6'1", 208)

I know, crazy, right? Maybe not. HCD could be the best available at this spot so the Giants would, by nature, select him.

The Houston Texans possess the first overall pick in this May's NFL Draft. ?New head coach Bill O'Brien takes over a team that lost 14 consecutive games to close out the 2013 season, so it's safe to say they need a shot in the arm as they start over in 2014.

I had a feeling cooler heads would prevail as the NFL Draft got closer. For months now, quarterbacks have been mocked by experts to be among the top ten players taken on May 8th.

Now that team executives, scouts, coaches and pundits have witnessed most of the prospects via the Combine, pro days and other workouts, the collective grades of QBs Johnny Manziel, Blake Bortles and Teddy Bridgewater have been dropping across the board.

Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk believes the Giants will select Florida State DT Timmy Jernigan with the 12th overall selection:

"Given the departures of Justin Tuck and Linval Joseph, the Giants need to restore some bite to a defensive line that didn?t necessarily carry them to a pair of Super Bowl appearances, but helped deliver victory once they got there."
Jernigan (6'2", 300) is considered the No. 2 overall DT in the draft, behind Pitt's Aaron Donald, who Florio believes will be gone by the time the Giants select.

Former Redskins' GM Charley Casserly, now an NFL Network analyst, was asked this morning about what he still sees as the Giants' needs going into the NFL Draft.

"I think they have a number," Casserly said. "Center is a question. J.D. Walton, they've signed him, but he's hasn't played in a year and a half. I think wide receiver needs depth. Tight end, they're very young. Defensive tackle, they need some depth there."

"But, I'll tell you the number one thing to me is the left tackle position," he said. "They have got to get that improved. They've got to get it stabilized. It affects the whole offensive line, and more importantly, it affects the confidence of Eli Manning.

I love mock drafters and speculators who feel confident they know who the Giants will select in the upcoming NFL Draft. I know it's fun to guess, but the truth is, the Giants are unpredictable. The first round is full of surprises and, over the years, the Giants have been one of the teams providing those surprises.

Most mockers make the mistake that the Giants draft out of need. ?The record shows they don't normally do that. On occasion, the selection intersects or coincides with a need, but that is not the team's mantra or goal come draft day.

The Giants will select twelfth?in the first round of the upcoming NFL Draft and will be at the mercy of the eleven teams in front of them. Normally, they would take who falls to them and move on.

But this year, there is an usual abundance of talented players. This draft goes several rounds deep so at No. 12, they will be getting more than just a talented player. They'll be getting a difference-maker.

Question: What is the Giants' plan at TE? Will they add another player before the draft?

Keep in mind, they are still committed to Adrien Robinson and he will be afforded every opportunity to contribute, possibly even start. Larry Donnell, another young player they have been grooming, is also still on the roster as is Daniel Fells, the former Patriots' backup. So based on that, plus the fact they are running out of cap room, I say they do not invest in a veteran before the draft.

Former Packer Jermichael Finley is believed to be on the Giants' radar, but he is still awaiting medical clearance and is reported to be "several months away" from signing with an NFL team.

The website Walter Football has a running 2014 NFL Mock Draft that is not as conventional as some. From time to time I stop by to check out which players they are mocking to Big Blue:

Round One: DT Aaron Donald, Pitt - Would start from Day One and never look back. He is both a need and a BPA pick. Donald is a player that will upgrade the entire defense by both collapsing the pocket and stuffing the run. Does he fix the Giants' "broken" offense? No, but he'll help break everyone else's.

Round Two: DE Scott Crichton, Oregon State - Don't like it. At least at this point in time. He's coming out a year early, has loads of potential and the Giants do need a pass rusher, but is he the answer? How long will we have to wait for him to play, is another question. We've heard this song before. There are too many pro-ready players in this draft to be dallying with projects this early on. That being said, the Giants may like him enough (he's a strip-sack artist) to pull the trigger. This draft is too deep for them to do that, however.

Sammy Watkins of Clemson is widely regarded as the draft's top WR, projected by everyone (present company included) to be a top-five selection on May 8.

The Giants, who select 12th, will not get a whiff of Watkins barring something unforeseen. They will, however, have a slew of wideouts at their disposal that could fit their needs.

The top two appear to be Mike Evans of Texas A&M, who will likely be gone by the time the Giants draft, and Florida State's Kelvin Benjamin. Both stand 6'5" and both were on the other end of passes thrown by Heisman Trophy winners during their college careers.

The NFL Network's Mike Mayock was asked on a conference call yesterday what he felt the Giants should do at No. 12 in the first round of this year's draft:

"I think wide receiver and tackles make a lot of sense right there and I think regardless sitting at 12, you're either going to get the third tackle or the second or third wide out if you were interested in that wide out.

So I think Taylor Lewan is a guy that can get there and if he got there, I'd jump all over him. And if all three were gone, you could still make a case for Zack Martin. I think he's a better??? he's very similar to Justin Pugh who they took a year ago but I think he's a better prospect, and then I'd also be wide open to looking at that wide receiver position and again, looking at Marqise Lee, Mike Evans, I think sitting at 12, they are going to get one of those three guys, or could get one of those three."Wise man. The Giants really can't go wrong here. They will have a lot of players that are still high on their board to choose from. The offensive tackle prediction is an easy one.

It's no secret that wide receiver is one of the most urgent needs for the New York Jets as they look at bettering their team through free agency and the NFL Draft. Free agency kicks off in less than a month, and already the Jets are rumored to have interest in pending free agents Jeremy Maclin and Emannuel Sanders. While Sanders and/or Maclin might be a boost to this offense, what about thinking longer term? It has been a long time since the Jets have drafted and grown their own true top receiver.

On Tuesday NFL Network's draft guru Mike Mayock answered questions from reporters on a conference call. According to Around The League's Dan Hanzus, Mayock was asked if the Jets might have interest in the receivers of this draft class.

"I wouldn't be surprised at all, if the?Jets?pick multiple wide receivers this year," Mayock told reporters. "You're sitting there at [the 18th pick], I've said earlier I think any one of three receivers sitting there. Marqise Lee who is a different guy that fits in that slot, outside and helps in the return game, versus the two big-bodied guys -- Evans and Benjamin.

ESPN's Mel Kiper, Jr. and Todd McShay have released their picks: ?Alabama LB CJ Mosely and OT Taylor Lewin of Michigan, respectfully.

Every great Giants team has had a TE that other teams had to game plan for. The Bill Parcells teams had Mark Bavaro and Zeke Mowatt. Later on came Jeremy Shockey, Kevin Boss and yes, Jake Ballard.

The current edition of the Giants have the sedentary, but versatile, Bear Pascoe; Brandon Myers, who was rarely in synch with Eli Manning, and Adrien Robinson, who has yet to show Giant fans that he was worthy of fourth round pick in 2012.

Brandon Myers is a talented player, but he just doesn't fit the Giant mold. And then there's Adrien Robinson...

The Giants will select 12th overall in next April's NFL Draft, as per the order published this morning (see full order here).

They finished 7-9, as did three other teams: Detroit, Tennessee and St. Louis. The tiebreaker is strength of schedule, so the Giants (.520) will select after Detroit (.457) and Tennessee (.504) and before St. Louis (.551).

Twelfth is the highest draft position the Giants have had since 2004, when they chose QB Philip Rivers with the fourth overall selection. Rivers, along with a package of picks, was then traded to the San Diego Chargers for QB Eli Manning.

As expected, the 2014 NFL Draft will be moved from it's traditional slot at the end of April to early May due a conflict at the venue (Radio City Music Hall). No further plans - including keeping the draft in New York City - have been revealed. The draft is a Thursday-Saturday event, as always, so you can get off the ledge - it won't interfere with Mother's Day.

From the league:

NFL teams were notified today that, due to a scheduling conflict at Radio City Music Hall, the 2014 NFL Draft will be held on May 8-10 in New York at Radio City.
