At ESPN Insider, Craig Custance writes that one major way the NHL can win fans back after the lockout is to try and lock in HBO for a 24/7 series that focuses on one series in the playoffs.

Bruce Boudreau, who was the Capitals coach during the first season of 24/7, said that he would love to be part of it and thinks it would make for great TV.

John Davidson said that it would be great for fans to see but the idea of doing it in the playoffs makes him nervous based on how secretive teams are during the playoffs.

One of the highlights of the last episode of 24/7 was hearing Mike Rupp engage in some trash talk with Jody Shelley during the Rangers win over the Flyers.

Rupp said that Shelley was "irrelevant" on the ice and wasn't going to have an impact on the game.

At Puck Daddy, Rupp said that he didn't like that what he said in the heat of the moment and on the ice was put out on TV. Rupp thinks that those words should stay between the players.

At AM New York, Henrik Lundqvist had a little piece talking about the Winter Classic and the lead up and preparation towards it.

Hank says that it was scary to think about the HBO cameras being around all the time for 24/7, but now it is easy to forget they are there.

Plus, I think it's cool for the fans to be able to see what goes on behind the scenes. We're a pretty tight group, which you can probably tell from the show. Overall, it's been a good experience, and it will be a nice thing to look back on for all of us.
I have talked with many non-hockey fans who have watched 24/7, and it's universal in thinking that Henrik Lundqvist could be the coolest person on the face of the earth. I think that after the first episode, and the guys saw how the program would look, they started to relax and probably even play up to the cameras a little more.

At Backhand Shelf, Justin Bourme gives a preview of what we are likely to see on the first episode of 24/7 tonight.

He mentions the different personalities that players have on and off the ice and getting a sense of who is close to who on the team.

At NHL.com, Dave Harmon told Dan Rosen that the episodes are usually finished about one hour before they air.

At NHL.com, Dan Rosen quotes Michael Del Zotto and Henrik Lundqvist as thinking Dan Girardi will be the star of the show while Mike Rupp thinks that it will be Artem Anisimov:

"If they're on their game, they're putting the mic on Artie as much as they can," Rupp told NHL.com. "He could just ask you to go to lunch and it could be the funniest thing in the world. His English is really good, but sometimes he'll just word a sentence in a way that just makes you chuckle. It could be missing a few adjectives."
Chris Botta wrote at the NY Times to expect a lot of Henrik Lundqvist and Sean Avery on the Rangers side and Jaromir Jagr on the Flyers side.

During his pregame press conference yesterday, John Tortorella mentioned to the NY Post and Ranger Rants that he feels like having cameras in the locker room is an "invasion of privacy" and that he doesn't like having people in the room.

I just don?t want people in our locker room but I know we have to do it. It hasn?t affected how we go about our business. I just don?t agree with it but it?s probably going to be a hell of a show when all?s said and done.
Tortorella expressed the same thoughts during an episode of Behind The Bench last season.

The first episode of 24/7 is this Wednesday at 10PM on HBO.

In the Daily News, Bob Raissman writes about the idea of the Rangers playing up to the HBO 24/7 cameras.

It was discussed during the post game show on Thursday night and Joe Micheletti said that it was something that had to be considered.

According to Rassman, on 1050 ESPN Radio on Thursday, Kenny Albert suggested that the HBO cameras were the reason for Artem Anisimov's celebration.

In the NY Post, Justin Terranova writes that John Tortorella has expressed to the producers of 24/7 that he has some concerns about the program showing parts of the Rangers strategy or revealing things that they don't want to get out about injuries.

He also writes that "Teams will not have the chance to look at the final copy of the show, but while the cameras are shooting they can tell producers that certain shots are ?off limits.?"

The producers say that those kinds of shots are mostly limited to what happens in the training room.

During the post game show on MSG last night, Al Trautwig asked Joe Micheletti whether he thought that the HBO cameras had an impact on the reason why Artem Anisimov celebrated the way that he did.

Joe said that he thought it was definitely something to consider.

Maybe it did, maybe it didn't, but Artie has been a celebrator before. He did the bow and arrow celebration against Montreal last season and I don't think this is that big of a deal if Tampa doesn't go after him. I agree with their choice to go after him and certainly would hope that the Rangers would go after someone if they thought they were being shown up.

At NY Mag, Joe Delessio lists ten things that he is excited to see on 24/7 which starts on the 15th.

Some of the things that Delessio is looking forward to are Sean Avery, John Tortorella making up his lines and hearing from Jaromir Jagr.

Two things that I want to see on 24/7 are profiles of Jim Ramsey and Benoit Allaire. Both are so important to the Rangers success. I am interested to see how Marc Staal is captured by the cameras as he recovers from his concussion. Mainly, I just want to see how the organization functions and see the interactions between players and coaches and trainers and equipment guys. I am dying to see one of the legendary times where John Tortorella talks to "Rammer" about the injuries.

At TSN, Chris Johnston writes about how starting next week HBO will be following around the Rangers and Flyers for the 24/7 series.

Johnson has a quote from Penguins coach Dan Bylsma about how the cameras impacted him in the locker room after a loss:

"The tough part is after you've lost a game and they're there," Bylsma told reporters in Pittsburgh. "We saw that last year. I felt it when we lost in the Winter Classic game -- you feel the scrutiny with the cameras there.

  • John Tortorella opens the show and calls it an "honor" to represent NY and that the greatest thing about NY is the "pressure."
  • Peter Laviolette says that everything is too important in Philly.
  • It doesn't have the same announcer that 24/7 had last year. Liev Schrieber I think.
  • They show the clip of Glen Sather saying that the Rangers are gonna come to Philly and win.
  • Paul Holmgren said that he didn't know Sather had stand up comedy in his blood.
  • Hank says that the sport doesn't matter, it is always tough to come to Philly.
I will try to get the video up, for those that missed it, as soon as I can.
  • Brandon Prust calls it a "more serious" version of Pond Hockey.
  • Torts says that the Rangers are a straight ahead, no no-nonsense team.
  • They obviously show the Flyers beating the Rangers in the last game of the 2009-10 season.
  • Ryan Callahan says that it is no longer good to make the playoffs. They need to do something when they are there.
  • Claude Giroux says that everyone hates everyone.
  • Brandon Prust says that the Flyers are the team he hates the most.
  • "Brandon Dubinsky plays like a little weasel" says FORMER RANGER JODY SHELLEY
  • Scott Hartnell is the least favorite player on the Flyers for Brandon Dubinsky
  • The Rangers have whistles with their logo on them.
  • Mike Rupp says that 24/7 shows the work ethic and the family life of all the players and shows that they are just regular people.
  • Torts calls the 24/7 cameras a "pain in the ass"
  • Girardi jokes that the cameras won't be difficult for him because of all the paparazzi he deals with.
  • There is a clip of Carl Hagelin from the preseason game against the Flyers. I wonder if it was a late addition to the show.
  • Hot dogs vs Cheesesteaks?
  • Torts says that "we're coming at ya" We are gonna be ready.
That was pretty enjoyable, more so than I thought it would be.

?I like it, because I think what it does is it exposes the players to a lot of different aspects of their lives that people don?t normally get to see,? Sather said. ?I think there has to be a little mystery left behind. I don?t want it to be a real reality show, but I?d like the fans to get to know that these people are real. A lot of the players, other than their pictures in the program, aren?t seen without their helmets. They?re all good people, they?re good guys, and I think those things will prove itself out.?

?This is an experience. Athletes are performers and this is an experience that we?re very fortunate to be part of. If you?re asking a coach, ?Are you thrilled about cameras all over the place?? No. But it?s not about the coach. It?s about the players. It?s about the organizations and we?re honored to be part of it with Philly. It?s a great opportunity for the Rangers to be involved in this.

Ranger Rants

As much as people want 24/7 to be about the coaches, it is about the players and I really don't see John Tortorella making himself out to be a focal point of the show. I don't think that he wants the same kind of attention that Bruce Boudreau got last year and he will stay as tame and boring as he can during the time the cameras are around.

Do not let it distract you. They are around 24 hours a day. Right when you wake up, they're there. It's something that can be distracting. If you let it distract you, it can cause problems.

So yeah, don't let it do that.

While meeting with the media at the Winter Classic press conference, John Tortorella said that he welcomed the idea of being part of 24/7 to help grow the game. Tortorella did say thought that he does have some reservations about some of the things that may be put on TV:

"You go through emotions and games and situations. I just want to make sure there's no embarrassing things especially to the players," he said. "That does not need to be out there and I don't think it will."
I remember one game last year where Brian Boyle and John Tortorella seemed to be going at it on the bench. MSG showed it and it certainly was what everyone was talking about. Taken out of context those are probably the kind of things that Torts doesn't want on the show. He has said in the past that adversity between player and coach can bring the two closer together, but that isn't how it will be seen by millions of people. HBO is in the business of making good TV but also portraying a favorable image for the teams and the league or the NHL won't continue to do a program with them.

The Rangers do say that they have some power over what will and won't be shown by HBO.
