Seven things to know about Tuesday's game...

1) Joel Embiid was once again the Sixers' leading scorer and he only saw 20 minutes of work in the game. He had 23 points and 13 rebounds for a double-double, and collected two assists and one steal as well. He was 9-for-18 shooting as he continued to stay efficient.

Joel Embiid's left knee will be a question for the Philadelphia 76ers for the duration of their playoff run, but when he is on the floor, things go extremely well.

Embiid's presence is among the reasons why the 76ers are on the verge of advancing to the Eastern Conference semifinals. And they have a shot to do just that Tuesday night when they host the Brooklyn Nets in Game 5 of their first-round series.

Philadelphia is attempting to reach the semifinals in consecutive seasons for the first time since 1999-2001 during the peak years of coach Larry Brown and Allen Iverson, a stretch that culminated in getting to the NBA Finals in 2001.

Many expected tensions to flare up in Game 3 of the Nets-Sixers series in Brooklyn, but Game 4 was went the trash talk from both sides boiled over.

Jared Dudley and Jimmy Butler were ejected from the contest after a skirmmish in the third quarter that saw both benches clear to break it up. But the scuffle didn't end the feud.

Embiid commented on what happened after the Sixers picked up the win, and made sure to answer the question first by calling Dudley "a nobody."

76ers fight past Nets in Game 4 00:01:59
In a heated affair, the 76ers got 31 points from Joel Embiid and took a commanding 3-1 series lead over the Nets with a 112-108 victory

Tensions were high in Brooklyn on Saturday afternoon, but the heat of the moment didn't work in the home team's favor. The Nets were up for most of the second half, but they couldn't close out the 76ers in a 112-108 loss in Game 4 of this First Round matchup. >> Box score

Five things to know about Saturday's game...

1) There was a point in the second half when the Nets were leading for 23 straight minutes. However, the Sixers eventually took the lead with a Joel Embiid layup with 2:54 remaining. From there, the Nets and 76ers traded buckets with D'Angelo Russell draining a three with 1:26 remaining to regain the lead. But Mike Scott hit the eventual game-winner, a dagger three in the corner. On the ensuing possession, Russell found Jarrett Allen on the pick-and-roll, and he would've had a clear lane to the rim if he caught the pass cleanly. Instead, the ball was fumbled and Allen was swarmed by Sixers, who took it away.

The 76ers are listing All-Star Joel Embiid as doubtful for Saturday's Game 4 against the Nets because of a lingering left knee issue, according to reports.

Embiid played in the first two games of the series but sat out Game 3 Thursday night in Brooklyn. It didn't hurt the Sixers as Ben Simmons and Tobias Harris dominated in Philadelphia's 131-115 victory as the Sixers took a 2-1 lead in the first-round series.

The Nets will play their first home playoff game in four years. Not much went right for Brooklyn in Game 2 except Spencer Dinwiddie's 19-point effort.

But the Nets took back homecourt advantage with the split. In the playoffs, that's a huge achievement.

"We go back to Brooklyn," Nets coach Kenny Atkinson said. "The old story, if you would have told us before we're splitting here in Philly, I think we'd be happy. But I'm not pleased with the way we presented ourselves. We were below average, quite honestly."

Back in the postseason for the first time since 2015, the Brooklyn Nets defended well, produced plenty of offense and flustered the Philadelphia 76ers at times in Game 1.

On Monday night in Philadelphia, the sixth-seeded Nets look to follow up a strong performance while the third-seeded Sixers hope to bounce back and level the Eastern Conference first-round series.

A Nets win would mark the first time they went up 2-0 in a series since sweeping the New York Knicks in the opening round of the 2004 postseason.

Kenny Atkinson walked out of a quiet locker room and into a small press conference area with a handful of reporters. Brooklyn's head coach was in near tears having witnessed a gruesome right foot injury to his 24-year-old rising star and development poster boy, Caris LeVert. He did the best he could to answer questions, but they weren't really answers.

No timetables. No clue what was going to happen next for a kid who already endured three surgeries.

But then he finished with a powerful statement, a true testament showing how much he believes in his young prodigy.

"I just know Caris," he said, "like if anybody's coming back from this [it's him]. Knowing the human, the character, the person, the player … he'll come back from this."

"I apologize for having my phone on the bench in today's game," Johnson said in a statement. "I take full responsibility and will accept the consequences of my actions. I also apologize to my teammates, the 76ers organization and the fans for the distraction this has caused."

The Nets and 76ers kick off their First Round matchup in the NBA Playoffs this Saturday, and Philadelphia is likely to be without one of their key starters in Joel Embiid

The Sixers listed the All-Star center as doubtful for the contest, per The Athletic's Derek Bodner. Embiid has been dealing with left knee soreness, and his status for the start of the playoffs has been a big question for Philly for some time now.

If Embiid is deemed out officially, it would be a big break for the Nets down around the rim. Jarrett Allen would have to go up against Boban Marjanovic, another very physical center. However, Marjanovic doesn't have the offensive versatility Embiid possesses, as the latter can score anywhere on the floor.

The Brooklyn Nets are all but back in the NBA playoffs for the first time since 2014-15. All that's really left to determine is who their opponent is going to be.

The Nets currently sit seventh in the Eastern Conference, up half a game against the eighth-seeded Miami Heat and behind half a game to the Detroit Pistons with six games to play.

At the moment, they would face off against the Toronto Raptors in the first round, but with constantly shifting standings, the Philadelphia 76ers and Milwaukee Bucks are potential adversaries too. Here's a look at which of the three teams makes for Brooklyn's best chance at an upset.

Joe Harris scored 22 points and Rondae Hollis-Jefferson added 19 for Brooklyn, which is clinging to a playoff spot.

How's this for a quandary?

The New York Knicks have had Kristaps Porzingis back from a sore knee for two games. The first was a 102-93 win over the Boston Celtics on Wednesday in which Porzingis scored a lowly one point on a miserable 0-of-11 shooting. That was followed by a 104-101 loss at the Detroit Pistons on Friday when Porzingis scored 29.

With their big man apparently healthy and ready to contribute, the Knicks will look for the right combination on Monday in a noon Christmas Day matchup with the visiting Philadelphia 76ers.

The New York Knicks and Philadelphia 76ers, both amid dismal seasons, tend to bring out the best in each other.

They meet for the third time this year on Friday in Philadelphia, after seeing their two earlier games come down to the wire.

The Sixers (22-38) prevailed 98-97 on Jan. 11, on a jumper at the buzzer by second-year point guard T.J. McConnell, while the Knicks (25-36) outlasted Philadelphia 110-109 on Carmelo Anthony's jumper with 0.3 of a second left on Feb. 25.

The New York Knicks face the Philadelphia 76ers on the road on Friday at 7 p.m.

According to STATS:

  • The Knicks (3-0) are trying to sweep this season series for just the third time in franchise history (1992-93 (5-0) & 1994-95 (4-0)).
  • Philadelphia's 107-93 victory over New Orleans on Tuesday was its 10th of the season; that means the NBA record for the fewest wins in an 82-game season will continue to be held by the 1972-73 76ers (9-73).
  • New York has won 31 games this season, which is 14 more than it had in 2014-15. That is the biggest increase in wins by any team this season. However, the Knicks are just 1-5 in their last six contests.
  • Arron Afflalo is averaging 20.0 (60/3) points and 7.4 (22/3) rebounds in his three games against the 76ers this season, shooting 57.5 (23/40) percent from the floor in these contests.
  • Carl Landry is averaging 19.0 points per game on 72.7 (24/33) percent shooting so far this month. He had 22 points on 9-for-10 from the floor in Tuesday's win over the Pelicans.
  • Robert Covington has made at least one three-pointer in 20 straight games. He is the second 76er to have a 20+ game streak this season (Hollis Thompson, 22 gms, December 14-February 3).

Sam Hinkie couldn't even stick around to see if the sorry Philadelphia 76ers team he built could win consecutive games.

The opportunity for that to happen for the first time this season comes Friday night against the visiting New York Knicks, two days after the general manager packed up his office and bid a 10-68 team adieu.

Former NBA executive of the year Bryan Colangelo - Philadelphia chairman of basketball operations Jerry Colangelo's son - is set to take Hinkie's place after the third-year GM announced his resignation Wednesday.

The Brooklyn Nets face the Philadelphia 76ers on the road Friday at 7 p.m.

According to STATS:

  • The Nets and 76ers have split their two meetings so far this season. Philadelphia's 103-98 victory on February 6 snapped its three-game home losing streak in this series.
  • Brooklyn blew a 16-point halftime lead in its 104-99 loss to Toronto on Tuesday. It was the Nets' biggest blown halftime lead in a defeat since they lost to New Orleans in overtime on March 24, 2014 after leading by 16 at the half.
  • The 76ers have given up 100 or more points in 12 straight games; that is their longest such streak since they allowed 100+ points in 13 consecutive contests, January 31-March 1, 2014.
  • Brook Lopez had 35 points and seven blocked shots against the Raptors on Tuesday, going 13-for-17 (.765) from the floor and 9-for-9 (1.000) from the free-throw line. That made him just the second player since 1973-74 with 35+ points and 7+ blocks in a game in which he shot 75+ percent from the field and 100 percent from the FT line (David Robinson vs Sea, March 20, 1990).
  • Isaiah Canaan has hit four 3-pointers in back-to back contests. He has 16 games with 4+ threes on the season, with him coming off the bench in half of those contests.
  • Nerlens Noel has 226 career blocked shots and 225 career steals. That makes him one of just two members of the 2013 draft class (Giannis Antetokounmpo) with at least 200 of each.
