Former Giants running back, Brandon Jacobs, believes this year's squad has the pieces to make a Super Bowl run, according to Dan Duggan of NJ.com.

Jacobs, who owns two championship rings from Super Bowls XLII and XLVI, is confident the player personnel is more improved from last season.

"They've damn sure got the players to do it," Jacobs said. "The coaches are there. Last year they didn't have anywhere near what they have now. I think they've got a good opportunity to go make some noise in the postseason next year."

Giants RB Brandon Jacobs has announced his retirement from football.

"After 9 years in this whirlwind business they call the NFL, I am proud to announce that I am hanging up my cleats. I've had an amazing run and I appreciate all of the support from the fans through the good and the bad. The New York Giants are a great organization and I am proud to have been a part of it for so long. I love my coaches and my teammates and will miss them as well as the game itself but I am healing well from my surgery and I look forward to running around with my kids for years to come!"

The Giants placed Brandon Jacobs on the injured reserve with a knee injury, ending his season.

This likely ends Jacobs' second stint with New York. The 31 year-old Jacobs was re-signed by the Giants in early September to augment the RB corps which had dwindling numbers all summer and still does. The move leaves the Giants with just three RBs: Andre Brown, Peyton Hillis and Michael Cox.

Sure we can look at the Victor Cruz fumble that was returned for a touchdown or the three third-down conversions by Tony Romo on that final drive as the main reasons the Giants lost last weekend.

But really, settling for field goals in two early red zone opportunities ultimately resulted in Big Blue leaving points on the board, which in turn wound up being huge in the loss.

Offensive coordinator Kevin Gilbride came under some heat for his play-calling within the 10-yard-line.

Was it perfect? No.

But the Giants found a way to win their fourth straight game in a 27-13 contest over the Packers, and unlike some of the recent wins, there were at least a good chunk of positives to take away from Big Blue?s offensive performance.

Victor Cruz was again at the top of his game, catching eight passes for 110 yards. Everyone else was efficient enough in helping the Giants get the win.

Usually a unit that is ranked 29th in the NFL doesn?t have too much excitement surrounding it.

However, the Giants? running game, averaging just 69.9 yards per game, all of a sudden looks like a multifaceted entity that could actually be a weapon for this team.

Again, the eventual grade will be based on production up until this point, not the future. But it?s important for us to look at what this unit may look like in the second half.

Brandon Jacobs spoke about the much-publicized death threats he and his family received via Twitter the other day. It all turned out to be a hoax of sorts stemming from someone who had Jacobs on his fantasy football roster.

Finally, the Giants played a relevant fourth quarter. But even though it was a close game right down the wire, the outcome remained the same for the Giants as they fall to an unthinkable 0-6 with a 27-21 loss to the Chicago Bears.

Sure, Eli Manning?s two interceptions early were brutal, ugly and right on par with how he has been playing all season. He was picked off on two of his first five passes.

But Manning rebounded nicely to put the Giants in a position to orchestrate a game-winning drive.

After last weekend?s performance in Dallas, not much more could go wrong for the Giants. But offensive coordinator Kevin Gilbride hopes the team can improve on the mistakes that cost them an opening-week loss.

The problem is that this week, Eli Manning will be going up against his older brother Peyton, who is fresh off a game in which he threw seven touchdown passes.

However, that is for the defense to worry about. The Giants? offense has plenty more to be concerned with than Peyton Manning?s performance.

The Giants are bringing back RB Brandon Jacobs, according to Mike Garafolo of FOX Sports.

Jacobs played in 100 games with the Giants from 2005-2011, racking up almost 5,000 yards and scoring 56 touchdowns.

He signed with the San Francisco 49ers for the 2012 season, but only appeared in two games, with just five carries for seven yards after a knee injury and suspension. He was waived by San Francisco in December.

As per Rotoworld: The Giants will work out a group of free agent running backs including Brandon Jacobs Tuesday.

Jacobs spent seven years with the Giants, winning two Super Bowls and recording two 1,000-yard seasons to go with 56 rushing touchdowns. But he found himself buried on the 49ers depth chart last year and has attracted zero interest around the league since being released in December. Now 31 years old, Jacobs would not be a real threat to David Wilson's starting job. Expect Beanie Wells and Tim Hightower to also be a part of Tuesday's tryout.
Old friend Mike Garafolo tweeted the following...

The Giants will work out RBs tomorrow. The group will include Brandon Jacobs.

With Henry Hynoski on the shelf indefinitely, the Giants may be looking for either another fullback - or option - to put in their backfield. Roll this name around your mouth: Brandon Jacobs.

Although it's highly unlikely, the Giants have been in a sentimental mood of late and could consider their former vocal leader as a possibility to defray the loss of Hynoski.

The names of two free agents hit the Giant beat's radar today: LB Rolando McClain and RB Brandon Jacobs. McClain cleared waivers and Jacobs is lobbying for a reunion with the Giants.

Both seem like long shots to land here with the Giants.

The Giants are rumored to be interested in McClain, who they coveted three years ago in the draft but were beaten to the punch by the Raiders, who took McClain with the eight overall pick. The Giants ended up choosing JPP at 15 and McClain went on to have a rocky existence in Oakland.

The Brandon Jacobs experiment in San Francisco has come to close. The former Giant RB was sent packing by the 49ers yesterday after a tumultuous season. He was injured in training camp and never figured into the Niners' plans, dressing for only three games and gaining a mere seven yards on five carries.

From Matt Maiocco of CSNBayArea.com:

The 49ers have officially to waived disgruntled running back Brandon Jacobs on Monday at the conclusion of his three-game suspension, coach Jim Harbaugh said.

For those inquiring about the possibility of RB Brandon Jacobs returning to the Giants, the answer is simple: it ain't happenin'.

Jacobs is under contract to San Francisco and they hold all the cards. He is currently suspended without pay.

The reasons behind the suspension have been stated by the Niners. It is suspected that Jacobs' frustration regarding how the team was using (or not using) him, which he had continuously and publicly documented via social media, led the team to suspend him for conduct reasons.

The San Francisco 49ers have suspended former Giants' RB Brandon Jacobs for the final three games of the regular season.

Jacobs signed with the Niners in the offseason but was unable to begin the year with the team due to a knee injury sustained in the preseason. He was ready to go by Week 4, but the Niners have only dressed him for three games this season. Jacobs has been extremely vocal about his lack of playing time and the way he has been treated by head coach Jim Harbaugh and the organization.

He has been expressing his displeasure with the team publicly through social media sites such as Twitter and Instagram.

Brandon Jacobs expressed frustration when he was not activated during the Giants-49ers game in October.

The former Giants running back, who left the Super Bowl champions to join the team they defeated in the NFC Championship game, was stuck on the bottom of the depth chart and failed to see the field for the first half of the season.

'Tis December now, and in his role with his new team, Jacobs has tallied all of five carries for seven yards; his season-high rush is a mere 3 yards.

There has been some speculation on behalf of San Francisco 49ers fans that running back Brandon Jacobs, formerly of the New York Giants, helped out his old squad.

One 49ers blog included a post from a fan who claimed he saw Jacobs "do something fishy" ...

"I'm telling you man, I have a really hard time believing there's no chance Jacobs did something fishy. It straight up LOOKED like they knew our entire gameplan and everything we were gonna do, then when you factor in we have a player who's been documented as being pissed at the coaching staff for never playing, AND that he used to play for our opponent and is clearly still very buddy-buddy with them based on his post-game actions, it's very very very very VERY fishy."
The fan points out Jacobs visited the Giants' clubhouse after the game, and that players don't just visit opposing team's locker rooms. Then again, not every player was such a key component on two Super Bowl-winning teams.

Records aside, the panic level in Philly is warranted.

Children are often unfamiliar to the particulars of professional sports? free agency systems. Their naivete and carefree, blissful dispositions towards the players and their performances can dominate their perception of the sport more broadly, which, at a young age, is probably the best general approach to take.

In this news-bereft lull between minicamp and training camp, stories like Joseph Armento and his good-willed financial investment remind us of the strong, lasting connections that innocent, youthful observers build through TV screens, radios and magazines with their favorite athletes. It was just three weeks ago that Joseph, after learning of Jacobs? new deal with the San Francisco 49ers, emptied his piggy bank and packaged its $3.36 of funds with a truly heartwarming letter, all in an effort to keep Jacobs with Big Blue.

Jacobs was touched by Armento?s sincerity, and repaid him with a $5 bill to refill his piggy bank as well as a signed Giants? helmet, but he wasn?t done helping Armento grieve over his favorite player?s relocation. Upon returning to the East Coast for a final pack-up, clean-out mission before moving to San Francisco, Jacobs joined Joseph with his five-year old son, Brayden, at the Jump On In bounce house in Boonton, N.J., for two hours of non-stop trampoline fun.

After an offseason marked by injury woes, rumors of Tom Coughlin?s not-so-secure job security, a contractual dispute with Osi Umenyiora and another nondescript, trademark Jerry Reese free agency period, the Giants shocked most preseason prognosticators in 2011 by winning the NFC East with a 9-7 record.

The ?Dream team? Philadelphia Eagles were everyone?s preseason darlings, bolstered by the additions of highly-coveted cornerbacks Nnamdi Asomugha and Dominique Rodgers Cromartie, defensive linemen Cullen Jenkins and Jason Babin, and running back Ronnie Brown, among others. The Cowboys, meanwhile, were the trendy pick for a second place finish and a wildcard playoff spot, a belief grounded mostly in the hopes that Jason Garrett, in his first full year as head coach, could push the right buttons and harness that team?s big-time potential into a deep playoff run?that he could, you know, do everything that Wade Phillips couldn?t do.

The Giants had one of the league?s most prolific offenses last season, ranking ninth in points per game (24.6), fifth in pass yards per game (295.9) and eighth in total yards per game (385.1). These metrics are impressive, but let us not ignore Big Blue?s putrid rushing yards per game average (82.1), good for last in all of football.

The departure of Brandon Jacobs?and his accompanying 152 carries and 571 rushing yards?to the San Francisco 49ers only figured to further debilitate an already feeble ground game, leaving the Giants in danger of reclaiming their spot as the league?s worst rushing team. Help arrived at approximately 11:30 p.m. Thursday night in the form of 5-foot-9, 205-pound running back David Wilson, a shifty speedster from Virginia Tech who immediately slides into the No. 2 spot on the Giants running back depth chart.

According to reports, former Giant RB Brandon Jacobs was involved in a "Death Race"-style event on the Garden State Parkway several weeks ago. The event was condoned by members of the New Jersey State Police, who were said to have escorted the cadre of luxury sportscars traveling at high speeds on March 30. The troopers have consequently been suspended from duty pending further investigation.

Jacobs was allegedly traveling with a group - The Driving Force Club - that was headed down to Atlantic City. His agent, Justin Schulman, told The Star-Ledger last week: "Brandon was part of a group that went down to Atlantic City on March 30....."Schulman expanded on his comments Sunday in an e-mail statement, saying, "Brandon did go to (Atlantic City) that day but wasn?t aware of the details of the police escort."

Jacobs does have a penchant for speed and has alluded to his ability to drove fast on several occasions....

So the Giants were crazy for letting Brandon Jacobs walk, huh? Crazy like a fox, maybe. The veteran RB has garnered little (or no) interest in the free agent market thus far, and it looks more and more likely that he could return to the Giants at a very modest salary.

That is, if the Giants still want him. We think they do. The two sides tried numerous times to come to an agreement on a contract but in the end, Jacobs' representatives would not budge, leading to his release.

Brandon Jacobs appears headed to the Jets or some other team after being released by the Giants last Friday. The team currently has Ahmad Bradshaw as their top ballcarrier, with little used DJ Ware and Da'Rel Scott as the primary backups.

It makes sense for the Giants to bring in a low-cost solution to replace him. There are several veterans that would fit the bill, but would they actually sign for less than the Giants had offered Jacobs (approx. less than $2 million)?

Brandon Jacobs' release by the Giants was not a shock to us here at GFB, but it has set off a discussion of where the veteran RB will play next. The 29-year-old Jacobs played seven years for the Blue, leaving as the 4th leading rusher in Giant history (4849 yds) and the franchise leader in rushing TDs (56).

The upside for any team that signs Jacobs is his passion and potential to scare the bejeezus out of defense with his size (6'4", 265lbs). The downside is, as we all know, is his inconsistent effort to utilize that size in short yardage situations.

Nevertheless, there will be many suitors vying for Jacobs' services. The Jets will certainly be one of them. They seem to have a few other issues to address this offseason, but the Jets will surely take a look and Jacobs will consider - and even take - their offer to keep his family in the area.

While the Giants and the Patriots? offenses revolve mostly on their prolific passing games, the key to victory in the Super Bowl may just come down on who can rush the ball more effectively.

The Pats and the Giants don?t particularly feature strong rushing attacks. During the regular season, the Giants ranked last in the league in rushing (89.2 YPG) while the Patriots were not much better, coming in at 20th in the league (110.3 YPG). Both teams are also middle of the pack in defending the run, as the Giants rank 19th in the league (121.3 YPG) while the Patriots are slightly better at 17th (117.1 YPG)

Both teams run the ball by committee with the Giants trotting out Ahmad Bradshaw and Brandon Jacobs to move the chains while the Patriots can turn to BenJarvus Green-Ellis, Danny Woodhead and even rookie Stevan Ridley.

While the 49ers and the Ravens might have more complete defenses and the Patriots may lay claim for having the league?s best offense, but out of the teams still left in the playoffs the Giants could conceivably be the most complete team.

As the Giants come together late in the season they are firing on all cylinders, both offensively and defensively. They are proving to be a matchup nightmare for opposing teams, as teams will have to play a complete game on offense and defense to stop the Giants.

On offense, Eli Manning and company are putting points on the board with ease. In their last four games (including the playoffs) the Giants are scoring a little more than 30 points per game. That is about six points more than they averaged during the regular season (24.6).

I don?t see any reason to stray from a formula that has been working. Especially when it is extremely appropriate for this particular scenario. So while I don?t intend to be too agitated today, I will be utilizing yet another comparison to the 2007 championship season.

In 2006, Tiki Barber served as the face of an underwhelming Giants franchise. In the fall of 2005 (a season in which he would break off a 95 yard run and accrue 235 rushing yards in a single game), he would accompany Jeremy Shockey to the bedside of a dying Wellington Mara. The two were described as the football patriarch?s favorite current stars.

But after years of serving as the lightening rod for an otherwise underachieving offense, Barber abruptly left pro football. His departure left a significant hole in the Giants roster. The hole was not much unlike the one that Jerry Reese found himself staring at when Steve Smith hobbled out the door and into the Eagles arms.
