Jets dream offseason wishlist 00:00:18
SNY's New York Jets analysts pick each of their top three free agents they want the Jets to sign this offseason.

The Jets have their new head coach in place, and as Adam Gase puts together his staff, the next big step is what Gang Green will do this offseason to improve their 53-man roster.

Jets GM Mike Maccagnan will have almost $100 million ($99,387,909 projected by OverTheCap.com) to work with in free agency, and to explore trades.

So who should they go after? The SNY Jets crew gave their dream offseason wishlist for the Jets, as they look ahead to the free agent class and players that could be on the market:

The day the Cleveland Browns named Gregg Williams their interim head coach after firing Hue Jackson, their former defensive coordinator made one thing perfectly clear: The Browns were lucky to have him.

"Since I left Buffalo (in 2003), I had 11 letters to interview for head coaching jobs," Williams said. "Four of them, I didn't even have to interview. Just show up and sign the contract."

Ralph Vacchiano | Facebook | Twitter | ArchiveTodd Bowles came to the Jets with the reputation of being one of the best defensive minds in football. And in his first season, it was easy to see why. After that, it was all a steady roll downhill towards the Jets becoming one of the worst defenses in the league.

That's startling considering how they had invested in their defense. For eight straight years, before they took quarterback Sam Darnold, they had taken a defensive player in the first round of the draft. And they had spent big money on defenders in free agency like corners Trumaine Johnson and Morris Claiborne as well as linebacker Avery Williamson.

Yet they still had no pass rush and they wore down late in games. The Jets' defense was a remarkable group of underachievers.

In a since-deleted tweet, Jets S Jamal Adams wasn't shy about one free agent he wanted the team to pursue this offseason.

"Yeah I like #55 Dee Ford off that end for us! Let's pay him what he wants!" Adams tweeted at 7:28 p.m. on Saturday as Ford and the Chiefs were crushing the Colts to advance to the AFC Championship Game.

The 27-year-old Ford had a tremendous game on Sunday, with one forced fumble, one sack, and four tackles.

For the first time since 2011, the Jets have a player to be named to the AP All-Pro first team.

Kick returner Andre Roberts became the first Jet to receive that honor since Darrelle Revis when he was named as a cornerback.

The 30-year-old Roberts led the league with 1,174 kick return yards and was one of five players to return a kickoff for a touchdown. Only he and Dolphins wide receiver Jakeem Grant returned both a kickoff and a punt for a touchdown in 2018.

Antonio Brown bad for Jets 00:01:15
Pittsburgh Steelers receiver Antonio Brown has expressed he wants out. SNY's Willie Colon reveals why he would be bad for the New York Jets.

Rumors have been swirling around all week in the Steelers' camp that star WR Antonio Brown has ticked off the organization to the point where the team is willing to trade him.

The Jets could very well be a landing spot if that was, in fact, the case.

New York has the cap spaced (projected $100 million to work with this offseason), and Brown is just the No. 1 receiver the team is desperately looking to provide their franchise QB Sam Darnold with...

Jets CEO Christopher Johnson sees the Jets as a "really good spot" for a new head coach. They've got a franchise quarterback, "some great young players." And, of course, they're in New York.

"Some people will be attracted to (that), maybe some won't," Johnson said. "But if you make it here, you're a freakin' legend."

That's true. Whoever leads the Jets to their first Super Bowl in 50-plus years will be a sports immortal. That possibility could be attractive for some. Overall, the Jets can offer a pretty attractive situation regardless for a new coach.

The Jets head coaching search is in full swing and Adam Gase is up next to be interviewed for the position on Friday.

With Gase in the picture, he joins another young, offensive-minded coach in Kliff Kingsbury among the candidates the Jets are interviewing.

Both are thought to be offensive gurus who could help the development of Sam Darnold. Kingsbury already has the blessing of Jets Pro Bowl safety Jamal Adams, but there are plenty of pros and cons to hiring both these men. SNY's Ralph Vacchiano takes a deeper look into weighing these two options:

After Jets safety Jamal Adams intimated he thinks USC offensive coordinator and former Texas Tech head coach Kliff Kingsbury is the best candidate to coach the Jets next season, he explained why:

Because he can help develop Sam Darnold.

"He's an offensive-minded coach," Adams said on WFAN's "Carlin, Maggie and Bart" show, according to Newsday's Al Iannazzone. "He's going to bring swagger. He's going to develop Sam into a great quarterback. Look at his track record."

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. -- Jamal Adams has never held back his opinion before, so he won't when he talks to GM Mike Maccagnan about the Jets' future. And Maccagnan better listen, because Adams is exactly right.

This Jets team doesn't have nearly enough good players on their roster. And with $100 million in salary cap space to spend, they better find some great ones if they really want this team to compete.

"You've got to go get players, man," Adams said in the locker room after the Jets ended their season with a terrible 38-3 loss to the New England Patriots. "You've got to go get big-time players. You've got to go get names. It's simple. You look at the top teams. You look at the Saints, you look at the Rams, you look at the Chicago Bears, you look at all these teams … Come on, man. You've got to get players."

Looks like Jets S Jamal Adams didn't have to talk about the bad officiating against the Packers after all. The NFL owned up their mistake instead.

On Friday, NFL Senior Vice President of Offciating Al Riveron broke down some questionable calls from Week 16 in the league. And the Jets made the cut with Adams' defensive pass interference call on 1st and goal in the fourth quarter. Draped all over TE Jimmy Graham, Adams batted down a pass in the endzone that looked to be legal with both players making contact with one another. The official thought otherwise.

But Riveron admitted to the mistake of throwing the yellow hanky, and explained why.

Bowles and Adams want one win 00:00:46
Todd Bowles and Jamal Adams just want to end the season with one win over the Patriots, and they aren't focused on the head coach's future.

This Sunday will be the third straight season that Todd Bowles' Jets will play a Week 17 game with no playoff dreams in sight. And because of that, his reign as head coach is likely to come to an end after their game against the Patriots.

But even if Bowles is reading the writing on the wall, he won't be thinking about that on the sideline. He wants to finish this season with a big win on the road in Foxborough.

"A win," Bowles told SNY's Jeane Coakley when asked what he wants to see from his team. "That goes by doing everything the right way. Just communication and talking to each other and flying around making plays."

He was an obvious choice for team MVP.

Adams' teammates voted him as the 2018 Curtis Martin Team MVP, as head coach Todd Bowles revealed the honor during a team meeting Friday morning.

Jets beat Bills 27-23 00:01:17

When Sam Darnold limped off to the locker room after the Jets' first series, it looked like this season was going to go from bad to much worse. This season had always been about him. But he had already missed three games with a foot injury after three terrible performances.

And now he was going to be out again?

Well, though it wasn't exactly a Willis Reed performance, Darnold returned quickly enough to give some life and hope to what's left of this Jets season. He went 12 of 18 for 139 yards in the second half and led a game-winning touchdown drive in the final two minutes to give the Jets a 27-23 win over the Buffalo Bills.

So much went wrong for the Jets on Nov. 11 that it was fair to question of the players quit. The heat under head coach Todd Bowles' hot seat was scorching; owner Christopher Johnson did comment on Bowles' job status after the game.

The Jets were more competitive this week, but still fell 27-13 to the AFC East-leading New England Patriots. Let's review three of the best and worst performances from Sunday's game.

Winners

QB Josh McCown

It was far from his best game as a Jet, but McCown passed for 276 yards and a touchdown in a steady performance that at least served the purpose of getting some of the Jets' offensive weapons involved and keeping New York in the game.

Is there a playoff team in NY? 00:00:47
SNY takes on the question... Could you make an NFL playoff team by combining players from the Jets and Giants in 2018?

Ralph Vacchiano | Facebook | Twitter | Archive

This is a terrible time for New York football, with the Giants and Jets sitting on what feels like rock bottom. They are a combined 5-14 this season, and the playoffs are already out of reach. And they are a combined 13-38 (.254) since the beginning of 2018.

But while there may not be hope at the moment for either team, there is still some talent on their two rosters. If they could only somehow combine the two, they might even have the makings of a playoff team.

Jamal Adams told Bleacher Report during the offseason that the 2017 Jets lacked energy in the locker room and seemed as if "everybody wanted to do the bare minimum."

Now halfway into the 2018 season, the safety says it's same old, same old.

"Honestly, I can sit here and sugarcoat everything, but things have not changed," Adams said Tuesday on WFAN's "Carlin, Maggie and Bart" show. "Obviously we're still losing and I'm not saying that we have guys like that in the locker room. But at the same time it's not changing, it hasn't changed and we've been losing. At the end of the day we're going to get it fixed, and the sun will shine."

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- A year ago, Jets owner Christopher Johnson made it clear he won't judge Todd Bowles on wins and losses alone. He said his evaluation would be about "progression" and whether or not he saw it would "be obvious to all."

It certainly was obvious on Sunday afternoon when the Buffalo Bills humiliated Bowles' Jets 41-10. New York looked unprepared, disinterested and incredibly incompetent.

And if Johnson wasn't considering firing Bowles before that, he certainly has to be now.

The Jets head to the bye week with a 3-7 record after a humiliating 41-10 loss to the Bills. Let's review three of the best and worst performances from Sunday's game.

Losers

QB Josh McCown

In his first start since last December, McCown was disappointingly erratic. He went just 17-for-34 with two interceptions, as he had five passes batted down at the line of scrimmage. Most of his 134 yards came in garbage time, as he averaged just four yards per attempt. Moreover, the majority of those yards came after the catch as the Jets ran an uninspiring horizontal passing offense.

Jets S Jamal Adams jokingly blamed Tuesday's 'liking' of a tweet that linked him to signing a future mega-deal with the Cowboys on an innocent case of "Twitter fingers."

That's what he told Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News on Thursday, correcting his social media slip-up with a declaration of his love for the Jets.

"I would love to be a Jet for life… and finish my career here," Adams told the Daily News. "God willing, that's definitely the plan…. That would be a dream come true. There's not that many guys that have played this game who have stuck with one team. That would be an honor. I would love to."

Jets safety Jamal Adams said he was "pissed off" after New York lost 13-6 to the Miami Dolphins on Sunday, its third straight loss after a 3-3 start.

"I don't know what else to say," Adams told reporters. "It's not Coach (Todd) Bowles's fault. I know he puts it on his back, it's not his fault. ... I'm sick of losing. Enough is enough, honestly. I'm fed up with losing."

The Jets defense held Miami without a touchdown and limited the Dolphins to 168 total yards on offense, however the Jets committed four turnovers -- all Sam Darnold interceptions -- and have been held to 16 points over their last two games.

Dating back to last season, Adams's rookie year, the Jets are 5-15 in their last 20 games. They have had two three-game losing streaks this season and lost six of seven games to end the 2017 season.

Jets discuss more disappointment 00:01:29
Jamal Adams talks about being "pissed off," and Sam Darnold, Todd Bowles, and Spencer Long explain what went wrong on Sunday for the Jets.

It's not unusual for a rookie quarterback, and it's not an indication of what his long-term future will be, but there's no doubt Sam Darnold has regressed the last three weeks.

And Sunday might have been his worst performance yet, one so bad that maybe it's time he takes a temporary seat on the bench.

The Jets' season is starting to look like a disappointment and is on the verge of becoming as bad as it was last year. But perspective is needed, because the Jets' plans never really focused on this season.

This season was all about developing their franchise quarterback and building toward being a contender in 2019 and beyond.

So keep that in mind when evaluating where they are at the half-way point of the season. With that, here are some first-half grades for a few of the players, decision-makers and decisions that have the Jets sitting at 3-5, but convinced their future is bright.

The Jets dropped to 3-6 with a disappointing loss in Miami on Sunday. Let's evaluate three of the New York's best performers and three players who struggled.

Losers

QB Sam Darnold

While some of his struggles were in part attributable to the poor performance of his offensive line, Darnold had an erratic performance that saw him throw a career-worst four interceptions, one of which was returned for the game's only touchdown. He was also lucky not to be intercepted on a few more errant throws.

Punch-less Jets fall to Bears 00:01:21
Todd Bowles, Sam Darnold, Morris Claiborne and Jamal Adams comment on the Jets' mistake-filled 24-10 loss to the Chicago Bears

Bent, theJetsBlog.com Follow on Twitter

The Jets dropped to 3-5 on the season in Chicago on Sunday as the Bears were too strong for them and eased to a comfortable 24-10 win.

The Jets had only trailed 7-3 at the half with one breakdown making all the difference. Tarik Cohen was completed untouched on a 70-yard screen pass as the Jets sent a seven-man rush and left the speedy back completely unaccounted for.

Although they stifled the Bears' offense for the most part, the Jets couldn't get anything going on offense, even though they strung together a season-high 14-play drive to account for their only first-half points. Things didn't get any better in the third quarter as they failed to register a first down, enabling the Bears to build their lead.

Safety Jamal Adams has emerged as a leader in the Jets' secondary since New York drafted him sixth overall in 2017. But he didn't think he would always be a Jet.

Considered one of the elite prospects in the 2017 draft class, Adams told the New York Daily News' Manish Mehta he thought the Chicago Bears would draft him, even after they traded up from No. 3 to No. 2.

"I'm not even going to sugar coat it. I thought I was going to be a Chicago Bear," Adams told Mehta ahead of Sunday's Jets-Bears matchup. "Everybody did. But it didn't work out that way. And I landed in the best possible position."

Ralph Vacchiano | Facebook | Twitter | Archive: EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. - The Jets keep insisting they're not the same, old Jets, and that they're not going to fall apart like they did last season. Even on Sunday, when they were clearly out-classed on the field, they swore they were ready to be a playoff contender now.

"I think we're there," Jets safety Jamal Adams said. "I think we're close. This team is a great team. We have a 53-man roster full of a lot of talent. There's no waiting for next year, or rebuilding. There's none of that. This team can be special."

It's a nice thought, but it might not be the Jets' reality. And their 37-17 loss to the Vikings made that crystal clear. These Jets are headed in the right direction. They've got some terrific building blocks in place...

The Jets' defense will hold a players-only meeting on Friday in an effort to rectify issues stemming from the team's loss to the Jaguars on Sunday, S Jamal Adams said on Tuesday on WFAN.

Adams said the meetings will be held not just once, but every week "just to get on the same page so we get out there and fly around and win ballgames."

Darron Lee and Avery Williamson said after Sunday's game that they failed when it came to "passing off" receivers in their zones, according to ESPN.

The Jets suffered a dispiriting 31-12 loss on the road in Jacksonville on Sunday afternoon. Let's break down how each unit performed...

Quarterbacks

Sam Darnold didn't throw an interception this week, although he had one negated by a penalty flag. He only completed 50 percent of his passes and was sacked three times as the Jets were shut out in the first half and didn't get into the end zone until the fourth quarter. Darnold missed on some deep balls, which could have made the game closer...

Jags pound Jets 00:01:12
Todd Bowles, Leonard Williams and Sam Darnold comment on the Sunday's 31-12 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars

Bent, theJetsBlog.com Follow on Twitter

Last season, the Jets didn't lose their third game until Week Six, but they've already dug themselves a hole this season, as the Jacksonville Jaguars handed them their third consecutive loss on Sunday. Once again, the Jets had a listless start and were unable to get back into the game as Jacksonville held on for a 31-12 win that arguably wasn't as close as the final score makes it sound.

On a hot and humid afternoon in Florida, it wasn't an ideal scenario for the Jaguars to march down the field on their two first possessions, chewing up over several minutes on each drive. However, the drive stalled in the red zone each time and Jacksonville settled for a pair of field goals and a 6-0 lead.

The Jets, by contrast, got off to a slow start offensively, as they once again seemed reluctant to throw downfield and punted after each of their first three possessions.

Jets talk D 00:01:22
Todd Bowles and Jamal Adams discuss the Browns loss and whether Bowles is taking over the defensive play-calling

As the Jets look ahead to their Week 4 matchup against the Jags, S Jamal Adams wanted to make sure that he clarified what he said about Thursday's loss to the Browns.

Adams made it sound like the defense wasn't ready for Browns QB Baker Mayfield, who entered the game late in the first half for the injured Tyrod Taylor. Mayfield had success and ultimately led a game-winning drive to cap the Browns' first win in over two seasons.

Head coach Todd Bowles also touched on Adams' statement, and cleared up a report that he saw taking over some play-calling duties from DC Kacy Rodgers...

Jets second-year S Marcus Maye has had to watch for the past three weeks, but he was finally back out with his teammates on Wednesday for his first practice in over a month.

Maye, who has been out with a foot injury, may not have practiced fully, but it was the most action we've seen from the Florida product. He says it was finally good to get back out on the field.

"I feel pretty good," he told The Post's Brian Costello. "I got out there today for the first time and ran around for a little bit and felt pretty good."

The Jets blew a 14-0 lead and lost 21-17 to the Browns on Thursday night. Let's break down how each unit performed.

Quarterbacks

Rookie Sam Darnold had his worst game so far, although he was arguably somewhat hamstrung by an overly conservative game plan. He completed 15 of 31 passes for 169 yards and threw two interceptions.
