ROSELLE, N.J. -- Kansas coach Bill Self says the loaded batch of incoming college freshmen -- which includes new Jayhawk Josh Jackson -- will play a critical role in determining the NCAA championship in 2016-17.

That would be quite a departure from this past season when there wasn't a single one-and-done player in the Final Four, where national champion Villanova as well as North Carolina, Oklahoma and Syracuse were all led by upperclassmen.

"I like what Denzel [Valentine] said [in accepting the AP Player of the Year Award at the Final Four], it's not a competition between seniors and freshman," Self told SNY.tv exclusively on Friday at the NJ Coaches' Clinic at Roselle Catholic High School. "It's not a competition. Everything's cyclical and guys develop at different speeds and rates but I do think that it was great for the college game to have so many veterans have an impact on their college programs [this past year].

The New York Red Bulls and Sporting Kansas City will limp into Red Bull Arena to face off on April 9.

For the Red Bulls, the injury bug has been limited to the back line, with the exception of forward Gonzalo Veron. Defenders Gideon Baah, Kemar Lawrence and Ronald Zubar are all out injured for the contest against SKC forcing the team to test the limits of their defensive depth. Midfielder Felipe will not feature in the match after being suspended for picking up a red card last week in New England. Second year midfielder Sean Davis is expected to take Felipe's place in the starting lineup.

Jesse Marsch has confirmed he will run a backline of Connor Lade-Karl Ouimette-Chris Duvall-Sal Zizzo for the match. Only one of those four started opening day, and Marsch is playing Duvall, a right back, out of position instead of trusting second round draft pick Zach Carroll with the start. Duvall will be making his first appearance, in any capacity, at center back. For the Red Bulls to succeed, the stabilizing factor of Karl Ouimette and the defensive play of Dax McCarty will be imperative.

Bill Self is calling Saturday's matchup between No. 20 Kentucky and No. 4 Kansas game "a great resume game," but he isn't exactly fired up about the timing of it.

The showdown between two of the most storied programs in college basketball takes place in the Big 12/SEC Challenge -- and right smack in the middle of their respective conference schedules.

"I do think it's a big game, but I don't know if John [Calipari] would feel the same as I do," Self said Friday on SportsCenter. "But this isn't the greatest time to play these games. You're in the middle of your conference grind and certainly you're stepping out. And it appears to be a bigger game to the fan base or maybe even the players than what it actually is in the real importance.
