NEW YORK - Marvin Bagley III showing up at the Nike EYBL session in Brooklyn on Saturday morning normally wouldn't be a big deal, but the last few months haven't been normal for the top-ranked player in the Class of 2018.

As a sophomore last season, the 6-foot-11 Bagley left Hillcrest Prep in November, enrolled at Chatsworth (Calif.) Sierra Canyon in January, was ruled ineligible to play after the state determined the transfer was athletically motivated, then lost the appeal. In the end, Bagley was left without a season, making his playing for Phoenix Phamily against RM5 on Saturday significant.

"That was the hardest time of my life, not being able to play, sitting on the bench and watching," Bagley said at the Brooklyn Cruise Terminal in Red Hook. "I love the game, and I obviously want to play and do things on the court. During that process, I was just staying positive.

NEW YORK -- DeAndre Ayton came to New York City with a chip on his shoulder.

"I don't want no doubt," Ayton told SNY.tv on Thursday at Baruch College. "This season I've got to show everybody there's no doubt that I'm the No. 1 player."

In Hillcrest's win over Victory Prep on Thursday at The Grind Sessions, Ayton championed his words with effort and production. With put-back dunk after put-back dunk (I counted four in the first half alone), Ayton invoked flashes of a young David Robinson. Defensively, he used his near 7-foot-5 wingspan to deter shots at the rim with ease.

BENTON, Ky. - For Josh Jackson, the thought of not committing to home state school Michigan State is difficult.

"It would be real hard," the projected No. 3 pick in the 2017 NBA Draft out of Napa (CA) Prolific Prep said Friday night at the Marshall County Hoopfest.

Sparty, the 247Sports CrystalBall current leader, improved their chances to land the coveted wing with the addition of one of Jackson's best friends, Miles Bridges.

The NCAA is looking into the status of Starshine Prep, the academic program associated with Hillcrest Prep, a Phoenix (AZ)-based prep basketball team that features stars Marvin Bagley III and DeAndre Ayton.

The NCAA sent two officials to visit Starshine Prep on Monday, NCAA spokesman Chris Radford told SNY.tv.

"As part of its review, members of the NCAA staff visited the school [Monday] for a site visit associated with the school's review (I wouldn't characterize it as an investigation)," he said via email. "The school's account will be updated on the EC website when the review is complete and a decision has been reached. It is also worth noting that since Hillcrest is a basketball team, not a school, our process is centered on the school, Starshine Academy."

NORTH AUGUSTA, S.C. -- I have seen the future of basketball and his name is Marvin Bagley.

Standing at 6-foot-11 and weighing 215 pounds, the 16-year-old Bagley attracted a crowd at the Peach Jam on Friday afternoon that included Kentucky coach John Calipari, Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski and two assistants and a slew of other high-major coaches who all came to see basketball's next big thing.
