From the very start of the season, Knicks fans were eyeing the No. 1 overall pick in the 2019 NBA Draft. And that is exactly what the team could be looking at, holding the worst record in the NBA by 2.5 games with only a few to go.

But, of course, the NBA Draft lottery only allows a 14 percent chance for New York to get that first selection. The second- and third-worst teams in the league also have the same percentage to land the pick that would more likely than not be spent on Duke's freshman sensation Zion Williamson. The only perk for landing the league's worst record is not falling further than No. 5 when the ping pong balls are chosen.

That worst case scenario for the Knicks is nightmare fuel for fans, but what about falling into the second or third slot after the lottery? Would it be that much of a loss for the franchise?

R.J. Barrett is going to have his choice of schools when it comes time to make a decision.

All the evidence you need for that is this: his AAU coach says the four schools recruiting him the hardest right now are among college basketball's bluest of bluebloods.

"He's wide open; the schools that he's hearing from the most are Duke, Kentucky, Texas and Kansas," Dwayne Washington of UPlay Canada told SNY.tv. "Those four haven't offered but they're hitting him the most."

NEW YORK -- R.J. Barrett's summertime one-on-one games with Andrew Wiggins are getting closer, but don't even try comparing the two Canadian wing players.

"I wouldn't really call it a comparison other than the fact that I'm doing really well right now," the soft-spoken Barrett said after going for 22 points, 8 rebounds and 3 assists en route to MVP honors as the White team lost to the Black team, 85-73, in the Jordan Brand International Game at Barclays Center.

"I think I definitely opened some eyes," Barrett added of his performance.

UNION, N.J. -- Simi Shittu and R.J. Barrett admitted it was a little strange to be playing at Kean University in New Jersey on Friday night considering the NBA All-Star Game is in their native Canada.

"It's a little weird because it feels like we're missing out because some of my friends are playing some Jordan [Brand] event [in Toronto]," the 6-foot-8 Shittu said after putting up 16 points and 8 rebounds as Montverde (FL) Academy fended off a late challenge from Roselle (N.J.) Catholic to win, 59-55, at the Metro Classic.

"But we're here because we just wanted to get this win because this a building point to Dick's Nationals [where the team has won three straight championships] and we just wanted to jell when we get to the end of the season."

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. -- Until this season, the influx of Canadian basketball talent hadn't hit Montverde (FL) Academy as much as it had some of its rivals on the American national basketball landscape.

After all, current NBA players Andrew Wiggins (Huntington Prep), Anthony Bennett (Findlay Prep) and Tyler Ennis (St. Benedict's Prep) all played elsewhere.

But beginning this season, three Canadians are playing for legendary coach Kevin Boyle at Montverde Academy and two of them -- 6-foot-8 sophomore forward Simi Shittu and 6-6 freshman guard R.J. Barrett -- have all the makings of future NBA players.

In an era when Canada's best young players are making their way south to play for American high schools, one of the brightest stars is already making waves at one of the nation's top programs.

The secret is out on R.J. Barrett, a 6-foot-6 2019 guard and the son of former Canadian star Rowan Barrett, after he scored 18 points on 6-for-12 shooting and grabbed four rebounds Monday night in Montverde's win over Huntington Prep, which was televised on ESPN2. Louisville coach Rick Pitino, LSU coach Johnny Jones and assistant David Patrick and UCF coach Donnie Jones were all in attendance.
