WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. -- Two years ago, Rawle Alkins out-dueled Isaiah Whitehead to win MVP honors at the Frankie Williams Classic.

At that stage, Alkins was being courted by schools like Villanova, Cincinnati and Seton Hall.

Fast forward two years and Whitehead is now moving toward the NBA Draft, while the 6-foot-5 Alkins is headed towards his freshman year at Arizona.

HOUSTON -- Count Rawle Alkins among those excited for Allonzo Trier's return to Arizona for his sophomore season.

"It seems like it would be good," the Brooklyn native told SNY.tv on Monday. "Now teams won't know what to do with us. It's going to be very hard to double-team any one of us on the team, we'll be a matchup nightmare."

The 6-foot-6 Trier announced earlier Monday he will return and won't test the NBA Draft waters. He was projected as a second-round pick in 2017 by DraftExpress.com.

HOUSTON -- Christ the King coach Joe Arbitello was driving one day in the spring of 2015 when his cell phone rang.

It was Villanova coach Jay Wright calling to say that the school, which was among the first to offer a scholarship to star guard Rawle Alkins during his time at the New York Catholic league powerhouse, would no longer be recruiting him. (SNY.tv reported last July that Villanova was no longer involved for the 6-foot-4 Alkins).

"He said Rawle wasn't going to come in and just start because guys weren't leaving," Arbitello, who has known Wright for many years, told SNY.tv by phone from New York. "Jay was just being honest, unlike a lot of college guys."

Arizona got into the Rawle Alkins Sweepstakes late, but ended up landing the New York City star earlier than expected.

The 6-foot-4 Alkins ended the suspense on Monday night, choosing Arizona over St. John's, UNLV, N.C. State and North Carolina in an announcement on ESPNU.

"Right now Coach Sean [Miller] is talking to me about Gabe York, he's a senior guard," Alkins said on air. "[He] scores a lot for the team, creates a lot for the team, so he's kind of looking at me as being the next leader on that team. Impact starter, impact player."

Rawle Alkins took recent official visits to St. John's, UNLV and Arizona and remains undecided where he will take his final two officials.

"I have two official visits left and I don't know where they'll be to yet," he wrote in his USA Today blog. "I'm gonna sit down with my family and figure that out soon. I'll let you know when I know."

The 6-foot-4 Alkins is also considering Kentucky, Kansas, Louisville, Indiana, North Carolina and N.C. State. Considering he's attending school at Raleigh (N.C.) Word of God Academy, he may wish to take only unofficial visits to the local schools - UNC and N.C. State. He has already been to both campuses.

NEW YORK --- Word of God (N.C.) senior guard Rawle Alkins and Archbishop Stepinac junior wing Jordan Tucker would potentially have been the two best scorers on the floor for St. John's on Sunday against Villanova.

With Alkins, Tucker and a handful of other notable prospects sitting courtside -- as well as tennis legend John McEnroe and Yankees GM Brian Cashman -- the Red Storm were thrashed by the No. 6 Wildcats, 68-53, at Madison Square Garden, extending the St. John's losing streak to 12 games.

"As a collective group, we know we played good but it's just being consistent," Red Storm redshirt junior Christian Jones said. "To bring that into the second half."

Rawle Alkins will take an unoffiical visit to Arizona beginning on Wednesday, he Tweeted. The Wildcats host Oregon on Thursday.

After speaking with head coach Sean Miller and assistant Book Richardson, a New York native, the 6-foot-4 New York native recently added Arizona onto his list -- which now stands at nine schools. Arizona sees Alkins as being similar in body type to Stanley Johnson, a former lottery pick out of Arizona, and are pitching that comparison to Alkins.

NEW YORK -- Rawle Alkins heard the overrated chants. He saw the people walking out.

He also saw Louisville head coach Rick Pitino and St. John's head coach Chris Mullin sitting in the stands. It was a game, he said, he didn't want them to see.

The New York native was making his return home this weekend in the Big Apple Basketball Invitational, but Word of God (N.C.) fell to South Kent (CT), 87-80, behind just 11 points and five rebounds from Alkins, the coveted senior. He picked up two fouls early in the first half and was forced to go to the bench. He never found a rhythm after returning later in the half.

NEW YORK -- Having landed one guard in the Class of 2016, Arizona is already trying to parlay it into two.

On the same day he committed to Arizona, Kobi Simmons reached out to uncommitted guard Rawle Alkins to try to sway him to join him in the desert.

"They told me they were going to get him, he told me that he was going to go there," the 6-foot-4 Alkins said of Simmons after earning MVP honors in his return home to the Big Apple Basketball Invitational after a 24-point, 10-rebound performance as Word of God Academy lost to Genesis Academy 86-78 Saturday night at Baruch College.

NEW YORK -- When Rawle Alkins returned home to the Big Apple for the Grind Session on New Year's Eve Day, the event was barely publicized and it cost fans $25 to gain entrance to Baruch College.

Not surprisingly, there were no college coaches or NBA scouts in the building, only a few media personnel and maybe 100 fans in attendance.

When the 6-foot-4 Alkins returns home this weekend for two games in the Big Apple Basketball Invitational on Saturday and Monday at Baruch (where tickets cost $10), he hopes for a much bigger showing.

NEW YORK -- Former Christ the King star Rawle Alkins spent his Halloween back in Queens on Saturday, where the five-star guard watched a St. John's intersquad scrimmage from the front row.

Even though the 2016 product will be lacing up his shoes for Raleigh (N.C.) Word of God Academy, the Brooklyn native said St. John's is still very much in the mix for his services, even as North Carolina and N.C. State have stepped up their efforts to land him

"Yeah, of course," Alkins said, when asked if first-year head coach Chris Mullin and the Red Storm still have a fighting chance. "They're in my top eight."

North Carolina was picked to win the ACC regular season title on Wednesday, but head coach Roy Williamssays the fake-class scandal has hurt recruiting.

"We've already lived with it for two years," he said Wednesday on ESPNU as part of ACC media day. "It's hurt us in recruiting, it's hurt us in several different ways. We're mad, we're sad, we're disappointed that it happened but we gotta play basketball. We've gotta try to control the things that we can control and our kids out there on the court, they're going to be playing, they're not going to be thinking about this stuff that we've got going on."

According to NewsObserver.com, North Carolina has paid out more than $10 million in legal and public relations costs to cope with an NCAA investigation "into a system of fake classes taken by thousands of students, roughly half of them athletes, that spanned three decades."
