NEW YORK -- When Rutgers offered its coaching job to Rhode Island's Dan Hurley, Cyril Langevine knew there was a chance he could lose his future coach.

A native of Guyana in South America, the 6-foot-8, 225-pound power forward out of St. Patrick's High School committed to Hurley in September. But once again this spring there were rumblings that Hurley might leave for the state University in his home state of New Jersey.

Had Hurley taken the job, Langevine could theoretically have tried to follow him to Rutgers, but he never had to confront that scenario because Hurley turned the job down and the school ultimately hired Steve Pikiell.

The complexion of University of Rhode Island, not to mention the Atlantic 10, is about to undergo a radical change.

The school announced Saturday afternoon that junior guard E.C. Matthews will miss the remainder of the season after suffering a right knee injury in the first half of Friday night's season-opener vs. American.

Matthews was helped off the court and underwent a battery of tests with team medical personnel on Saturday.

Rhode Island won its season-opener on Friday night but it did not come without a cost.

E.C. Matthews, a 6-foot-4 junior guard who is the team's star player, injured his knee while driving to the basket in the first half of a 65-42 win over American and is due to get an MRI on Saturday. As he spun and drove to the basket midway through the first half, Matthews went to the floor and grabbed his knee.

"It's probably 50/50," head coach Dan Hurley told CBS Sports when asked if it might be a season-ending injury. "From talking to the trainers and medical people, they don't want to give you anything. I couldn't really tell. The kid wasn't in awful spirits.

St. Anthony Hall of Fame head coach Bob Hurley famously said he would never schedule a game against St. Benedict's Prep when his son, Dan Hurley, was the head coach, because his wife, Chris, wouldn't allow it.

Pretty much in tune with that thinking, don't expect Dan, now the head coach at Rhode Island, to schedule a regular-season game against his older brother, Bobby Hurley, who was named head coach at Arizona State in April.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. ? There were six NBA scouts lined up on the baseline Wednesday night for the annual Ocean State showdown between Providence College and the University of Rhode Island.

There?s no question that representatives from Detroit, Oklahoma City, Charlotte, Memphis, Orlando and Philadelphia left with a boatload of notes concerning URI sophomore E.C. Matthews. For a player who has been mentioned in 2015 NBA mock draft lists since the summer, the youngster from Detroit did little to diminish his status with a game-best 27 points in the Rams? 68-60 loss to their in-state rivals.
