Cano appreciates David Wright 00:00:56
Robinson Cano was given David Wright's locker in Port St. Lucie, his response about Wright and what it means will make Mets fans happy.

When Robinson Cano got down to Port St. Lucie, he saw his new locker in the clubhouse with his new orange and blue threads. But it isn't just any locker Cano was given.

It was David Wright's locker.

Wright won't be in the clubhouse this season, but instead, will serve as a special assistant in the Mets' front office. So the Mets thought giving Cano, one of the fresh faces in the building, his empty locker, and Cano realizes how much of an honor it is.

Highlights from Cano's presser 00:02:30
Robinson Cano talked to the media for the first time in Florida. Highlights include why he thinks he and the Mets can be in the playoffs.

Much like the man who brought him back to New YorkRobinson Cano has high expectations for the Mets this season.

Mets GM Brodie Van Wagenen wanted to change the team's culture, and he did so almost immediately with a blockbuster deal that landed Cano and closer Edwin Diaz. Van Wagenen has since made other deals, like signing Jed Lowrie and Wilson Ramos, to add more firepower in what everyone hopes will be a playoff season for New York.

That's exactly what Cano envisioned when he waived his no-trade clause immediately after learning a deal was in place to send him back to the concrete jungle. He knows this team has the potential to make it back to the postseason.

When Robinson Cano came over in Brodie Van Wagenen's first blockbuster deal as new Mets GM, he was very specific about what he wanted his role to be on his new team.

And that role is being the Mets' everyday second baseman.

"To be honest, it's hard when you have to move around when you play second base for 14 years," he told SNY's Steve Gelbs back at his introductory press conference with new closer Edwin Diaz. "Hopefully I'll be able to play second base every day."

Early arrivals at Mets camp 00:01:10
SNY gets first look at New York Mets early arrivals to '19 Spring Training in Port St. Lucie. We see Matz and Syndergaard playing catch.

With free agents Manny Machado and Bryce Harper still available, some fans have wondered why the Mets have not aggressively pursued the two All-Stars.

Yet GM Brodie Van Wagenen assured that the moves they have made this winter have significantly improved the team.

"I think fans always have their right to an opinion...but I hope the fan base recognizes the amount of work we've done this offseason and number of needs that we addressed," he told reporters on Monday.

David Wright surprises NYIT 00:01:35
New York Mets legend David Wright took some time to surprise the baseball and softball teams of NYIT and give them some big league advice

David Wright likes what he sees when it comes to the Mets' new-and-improved roster.

The former third baseman, who is now a special assistant to GM Brodie Van Wagenen, does not believe the lineup will struggle to score runs as it did last season.

"Our lineup is certainly stronger and deeper than it was last year," he said on Friday.

John Harper, SNY.tv | Twitter | In the interest of equal time, if you will, I thought it only fair to bring the Mets into this week's Hall of Fame discussion, if not the actual proceedings.

Because, let's face it, in a feel-good week for the Yankees, the only good news to come out of the voting for Mets' fans was the lack of a significant increase for Roger Clemens. The Rocket may be paying the big price for his steroids taint but in Queens he remains forever branded as a villain for once famously throwing that broken bat in Mike Piazza's direction.

Mets second baseman Robinson Cano was scheduled to play Tuesday for the Oriental Stars, known as the Estrellas Orientales, in the Domincan Winter League, according to sports reporter Hector Gomez

Cano was to bat third and start at second base behind manager Fernando Tatis, while being accompanied by Twins third baseman Miguel Sano, who was starting at the hot corner and batting cleanup for the Estrellas Orientales.

However, the Mets said that Cano did not play.

The Mets have had a busy offseason this winter and Mets manager Mickey Callaway is expecting things to be different in his second season in Queens.

Callaway, in an interview with MLB Network Radio on SiriusXM on Monday, says they have "significantly upgraded" the team and credits GM Brodie Van Wagenen's tireless efforts to improve the club.

What particularly stands out to Callaway, though, is how different the lineup will be in 2019.

Robinson Cano elated to be in NY 00:03:53
Robinson Cano joined Steve Gelb after his introductory press conference. The second baseman is excited to be back in NY with the Mets.

Robinson Cano is back in New York wearing pinstripes, but with a slight color change. This time around, his No. 24 jersey will have the Mets' blue and orange, and he couldn't be happier as he donned it for the first time on Tuesday during his introductory press conference.

But Cano doesn't want too much change from his last stint in New York, more specifically what position he plays. Speaking with SNY's Steve Gelbs, the 36-year-old said second base -- his natural position -- is where he hopes to play every game with the Mets.

"To be honest, it's hard when you have to move around when you play second base for 14 years," he said. "Hopefully I'll be able to play second base every day."

Former Yankee third baseman Alex Rodriguez knows what lies ahead for ex-teammate Robinson Cano

Cano was suspended 80 games for testing positive for the diuretic Furosemid, which is used as a masking agent. He is currently serving that suspension as he nurses his fractured hand he sustained during an at-bat.

Rodriguez, who was spending for the entire 2014 season for his own PED use, thinks the road will be tough for Cano. But he believes he will land on his feet...

Managers manager Lloyd McClendon called out Yankees hitting coach Kevin Long for his criticism of Robinson Cano's hustle.Long recently spoke about Cano not running hard to first base and how Long helped fix Cano's work ethic in game and off the field."Last time I checked, I didn't know that Kevin Long was the spokesman for the New York Yankees," McClendon told ESPN.com. "That was a little surprising. I was a little pissed off, and I'm sure Joe [Girardi] feels the same way. He's concerned with his team and what they're doing, not what the Seattle Mariners players are doing."Read more: ESPN

It was reported yesterday that Victor Cruz would follow fellow New York superstar Robinson Cano to Jay-Z's new sports management firm.

Cruz, a restricted free agent, is now officially a part of Creative Artists Agency (CAA). The Giants wide receiver recently hired CAA's Tom Condom to represent him, and it is expected he will handle Cruz's contract negotiations with the team.

In addition to his salsa dance, Cruz celebrated his touchdowns last season by flashing the Roc hand sign, which looks like he's forming a diamond. Cruz declined speaking about his future endeavors, but sources said Cruz's actions were his way of notifying people he was joining Jay-Z's Roc Nation Sports family.
