Syracuse coach Scott Shafer shrugged off the question.

"If I did, that would be between Mark and I," Shafer, in his third year, said Tuesday on his weekly conference call with reporters when asked if he had met with athletic director Mark Coyle.

"For me, it's just a matter of focusing in on things that are out in front of us right now. All the other things behind closed doors are just that - behind closed doors between me, my staff and anyone in the administration," he said.

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (AP) Syracuse coach Scott Shafer gritted his teeth one more time. That big victory he and the Orange are desperate for will have to wait another week.

DeShaun Watson made sure Clemson stayed on track for a shot at the national championship, accumulating 461 total yards and accounting for three touchdowns to help the top-ranked Tigers hold off Syracuse 37-27 on Saturday.

The Orange forced two first-quarter fumbles and intercepted Watson once, but the sophomore made sure the Tigers (10-0, 7-0 Atlantic Coast Conference; No. 1 CFP) prevailed to keep their unblemished record intact.

Syracuse coach Scott Shafer is running out of time to put the skids on what's shaping up as another lost season.

The Orange (3-6, 1-4 ACC) have lost six straight after a promising start and quarterback Eric Dungey is recovering from another hard hit that knocked him out of the Louisville game on Saturday.

Shafer said Tuesday that Dungey was being monitored daily and declined to say whether the freshman would start at home on Saturday against No. 1 Clemson (9-0, 6-0 ACC).
