R.J. Cole, the 6-foot-1 Class of 2017 point guard at St. Anthony's, verbally committed to Howard University on Monday, spurning Monmouth and Boston University in the process.

For Howard, Cole could end up being a program-changer who could change how other recruits look at coming to the school.

"I got really close with the coach [Kevin Nickelberry] and he's been there from the beginning," Cole said of choosing the historically black institution.

TRENTON, N.J. -- Asante Gist made history on Monday night.

Of all the players in the history of New Jersey high school basketball, none had ever won the prestigious Tournament of Champions title with two different schools.

Until Gist, that is.

TRENTON, N.J. -- It was less than 24 hours before he was set to be officially introduced as the new Rutgers men's basketball coach on Tuesday when Steve Pikiell picked up the phone and made a very significant call.

Pikiell reached out to the most powerful high school coach in the state of New Jersey (and maybe the country) -- Naismith Hall of Famer Bob Hurley -- to wish him good luck in the Tournament of Champions final and to ask for support.

Pikiell then followed our advice and attended St. Anthony's 55-38 victory over Linden in the TOC final at Sun National Bank Center, which completed a perfect 32-0 season for the Friars and gave Hurley his 13th TOC title. Hurley's career record is now 1,162-119 (.907).

TOMS RIVER, N.J. -- Jagan Mosely didn't want his lasting legacy at St. Anthony's to be the leader of the first senior class under Bob Hurley never to win a state title.

So the Georgetown-bound guard, who sports "0" on his jersey as a constant self-reminder that he has no rings, took matters into his own hands on Saturday at the Pine Belt Arena.

Facing the same Roselle Catholic program that had deprived St. Anthony's of a Non-Public B championship each of the last three seasons, Mosely dropped a game-high 16 points, 9 of which came in the fourth quarter, leading the Friars to a 53-37 win for their 28th state title all-time-and their first since 2012.

Bob Hurley has won more than 1,000 games and 12 New Jersey Tournament of Champions titles in his Hall of Fame coaching career at St. Anthony's High School in Jersey City, N.J.

Yet in the past few years, one school and one coach have been a real thorn in his side.

Roselle Catholic and coach Dave Boff have ended St. Anthony's season three years in a row in the Non-Public B State title game, and the Lions have won four of their last five games with St. Anthony's.

Bob Hurley says he hasn't yet spoken with his son, Rhode Island coach Dan Hurley, about the Rutgers basketball opening, but believes that the school needs to hire a young, hungry coach who can get after it on the recruiting trail.

Rutgers on Thursday fired 61-year-old Eddie Jordan after three years and Dan Hurley, 43, is considered the No. 1 option to replace him.

"Well, there's work to be done so the person that comes in I think needs to be a younger guy on the way up who is prepared to put the time in to just outwork people," the legendary St. Anthony's coach told me Friday morning by phone as he prepared for Saturday night's Non-Public B state championship game against Roselle Catholic.

PISCATAWAY, N.J. -- When St. Anthony's takes the floor on Saturday night in search of its first Non-Public B title in four years, it will be doing so against a very familiar opponent, particularly for senior point guard Asante Gist.

Behind Gist's 19 points on 7-of-8 shooting (including 4-of-5 from behind the arc), St. Anthony's cruised to a 64-29 victory over Dwight-Englewood Thursday night at the Rutgers Athletic Center. The win ensured the Friars (29-0, ranked No. 1 in the state and No. 4 by USA Today) another North Non-Public B crown and a shot at redemption against Roselle Catholic in Toms River.

Ranked No. 2 in New Jersey, Roselle Catholic is responsible for singlehandedly ending St. Anthony's season each of the last three years. It also happens to be where Gist spent his first two seasons and part of his junior campaign, playing a role in the Lions' Tournament of Champions title in 2013. (RC also won in 2015 after he transferred out to Marist High School.)

ROSELLE, N.J. -- Georgetown coach John Thompson III was in Newark last week to watch the Blair Academy-St. Benedict's Prep game and on his way out of town he happened to meet up with his future guard Jagan Mosely at Newark Penn Station. Mosely was on his way from practice in Jersey City to his home in Marlboro, N.J.

The two chatted for a few minutes and the conversation covered both the 6-foot-3 Mosely's future with the Hoyas, and how the St. Anthony's guard could facilitiate recruiting efforts for the Class of 2016.

"He was in Jersey watching St. Benedict's and we just met up and we were just talking about the future there and we also talked about Taurean Thompson as well, too," Mosely said after going for 11 points and 4 rebounds as St. Anthony's remained perfect on the season with a 60-42 win over Bishop McNamara (MD) on Saturday at the PrimeTime Shootout at Roselle Catholic. The Friars (21-0) are ranked No. 4 nationally by USA Today.

Temple head coach Fran Dunphy was in the house, along with assistants from Pittsburgh, Georgia Tech, Monmouth, Wagner and FDU.

The 6-foot-4, 180-pound Turner, a transfer from Trumbull (CT) High School, said Maryland, Providence, Georgetown, and Virginia have all expressed interest lately.

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. -- After coaching against Kentucky-bound guard Malik Monk on Monday morning and watching him throw down a series of highlight-reel dunks, Naismith Hall of Fame coach Bob Hurley said he was "absolutely an NBA player."

Monk is projected as the No. 10 pick in the 2017 NBA Draft by DraftExpress.com.

But what kind of NBA player will he be?

JERSEY CITY, N.J. -- Asante Gist was at the first day of practice at his third high school when he suffered a minor injury and Naismith Hall of Fame coach Bob Hurley told him he just might not be cut out for it.

"That's just a little injury, you gotta do better than that," the legendary coach told the 5-foot-9, 180-pound senior who had previously played at Roselle Catholic and Marist High School. "You might not be able to play here."

But Gist took Hurley's words as a challenge and just kept on playing and persevering.

UNION, N.J. -- During St. Anthony's 88-27 destruction of Red Bank Catholic on Sunday at Kean University's Harwood Arena, Mike Rice sat courtside alongside several other college coaches.

Whereas a couple of years ago, Rice might have been scouting St. Anthony's in order to recruit players for the Rutgers men's basketball team, now he was scouting them in a new role.

As the coach of The Patrick School, Rice will go head-to-head with his friend, Naismith Hall of Fame coach Bob Hurley, and his team on Saturday afternoon in the Dan Finn Classic at the Jersey City Armory.

There are 50 states in the union and only one of them has three boys basketball teams ranked in the Top 10 in the nation.

That would be New Jersey where St. Patrick's (5-1), St. Anthony's (5-0) and St. Benedict's Prep (13-0) are currently 7-8-9 in the MaxPreps Xcellent 25 National Boys Basketball Rankings.

And that doesn't even include Roselle Catholic, the defending New Jersey Tournament of Champions winner which dropped out of the poll after listing at No. 13.

The No. 8 center in the Class of 2017 according to 247Sports.com and the cousin of heralded 2016 big man Thon Maker, Mading committed to Arizona State and head coach Bobby Hurley on Tuesday night, St. Anthony's coach Bob Hurley told SNY.tv.

JERSEY CITY, N.J. -- St. Anthony's game against Pope John XXIII was already well out of hand when 6-foot-10 Daniel Mading got the ball in transition, took a few long strides down court and then elevated for a two-handed dunk that put an exclamation point on his play for the night.

With assistant coaches from Georgetown, Pittsburgh and Seton Hall among those in the packed gym for the Skyline Classic, Mading made a statement in going for 14 points, 4 rebounds and 2 assists as the Friars remained unbeaten on the young season with a 71-48 rout of a young and still winless Pope John team.

"I'm just trying to fit in the system and get more comfortable," said Mading, who was born in the Sudan and raised in Australia before transferring in to St. Anthony's (4-0) from The Rock School in Gainesville, Fla., before this season.

Roselle Catholic coach Dave Boff was chatting with his team at practice on Wednesday about their collective goal of winning another New Jersey Tournament of Champions title.

The Lions are the defending TOC champs and have won two of the last three, thanks largely to players like current Kentucky freshman guard Isaiah Briscoe and current Syracuse junior forward Tyler Roberson.

With the high school season in New Jersey set to begin on Friday, the new-look Lions are once again among the favorites to capture the TOC title after adding transfers Leondre Washington (Teaneck), Nate Pierre-Louis (St. Benedict's Prep) and Andre Rafus (Baltimore St. Frances) to a core that included guard Matt Bullock and power forward Naz Reid. They are ranked No. 1 in the The Star-Ledger preseason poll.

St. Anthony's assistant coach Eric Harrield says Rutgers head coach Eddie Jordan and his staff haven't recruited the storied New Jersey high school program coached by Hall of Famer Bob Hurley as effectively as they could have, and the state university has work to do in building relationships going forward.

"It would be great if they were in the gym more," Harrield, a former college assistant at Buffalo under Bobby Hurley, said Wednesday on The 4 Quarters Podcast.

"I understand they do have a lot going on and they have to fulfill their needs for this year's recruiting class, but we would love to see them in the gym. I think we have some talent that could help them. But they haven't been there much. We would love to have the state school in our gym as much as possible."

JERSEY CITY, N.J. -- One afternoon early last week, Georgetown assistant coach Kevin Broadus pulled his rental car into the parking lot at the Community Education and Recreation Center in Jersey City -- the St. Anthony's High School practice facility known as the CERC.

Once inside the gym, Broadus was one of several Division 1 assistant coaches watching an open gym featuring the Friars, the program run during the season by legendary Naismith Hall of Fame coach Bob Hurley.

Georgetown already has one player committed from St. Anthony's in senior guard Jagan Mosely. And the Hoyas probably wouldn't mind adding a few more, either.
