St. John's head coach Chris Mullin and assistant Matt Abdelmassih will be busy on the recruiting trail this week.

On Tuesday, St. John's was set to host Moses Brown, the 7-foot-1 Class of 2018 big man from Archbishop Molloy and New Heights, as well as 6-10 Class of 2019 big man Aidan Igiehon of Lawrence Woodmere Academy.

Brown took an unofficial visit to UConn on Aug. 31. UConn had already offered him a scholarship.

Zach Brown, a 7-foot-2, 265-pound Class of 2017 center from Miami, has committed to St. John's, his guardian Michael Lipman told SNY.

Brown was arrested in Miami in May on multiple robbery charges, according to a police record.

Brown was charged with armed robbery, credit card fraud and robbery by sudden snatching. The first two carried a bond of $10,000 apiece and the third charge carried a bond of $5,000.

Ever since he reclassed into the Class of 2018 earlier this month, Sid Wilson's recruitment has really taken off.

After averaging 18.5 points at the Under Armour event in Charlotte last weekend, the 6-foot-7 wing from The Bronx, has added offers from St. John's, Seton Hall, UNLV, SMU, USC and Memphis. He said he may also visit Texas sometime in August.

"It feels good," Wilson, who will transfer to Brewster (N.H.) Academy from St. Raymond's, told SNY.tv. "I played really well in [Charlotte] N.C. so the coaches are noticing."

Mitch Richmond is "going through the hiring process" to become a new assistant coach under St. John's head coach Chris Mullin, a source told SNY.tv.

Richmond, currently a special advisor to Mullin, is "still a work in progress," the source said.

If he is named to the staff to replace Barry "Slice" Rohrssen, Richmond would become the first African-American on the St. John's staff.

Chris Mullin got a head start on his recruiting for the Class of 2018 on Monday when he landed a pledge from Boubacar Diakite, a 6-foot-8 forward from Our Savior New American who visited the school's Elite Camp last week.

Diakite, known as Bouki, joins fellow Mali native and former Our Savior teammate Kassoum Yakwe, in the St. John's family.

"I have a great relationship with St. John's," Diakite, who runs with the PSA Cardinals 16U team, told 247Sports.com. "They made me feel a part of their family from the start. Having the relationship made me feel comfortable. I am excited to play for Chris Mullin and be a part of such a great history. This is a very exciting decision for me and my family and now will be focused on getting better with basketball and focus on academics."

Scottie Lewis was experiencing frustration with his team's play on Wednesday at the St. John's Elite Camp when he got some calming words of wisdom from a former player.

That former player happened to be Chris Mullin, the Naismith Hall of Famer and St. John's coach.

"With the team that I was on, they weren't playing the way they were supposed to play and [Mullin] pulled me aside and told me to keep my head and that they've been keeping a good eye on me, and that I play the game correctly," Lewis, a 6-foot-5 Class of 2019 shooting guard from the Ranney (N.J.) School, told SNY.tv. "He basically calmed me down and told me to be a captain and take leadership."

St. John's and associate head coach Barry "Slice" Rohrssen are finalizing a buyout agreement and will soon part ways, multiple sources told SNY.tv.

After leaving John Calipari's staff at Kentucky to return to his native New York for the 2015-16 season, Rohrssen served under first year coach and close friend Chris Mullin when the Red Storm finished 8-24, 1-17 in the Big East. Rohrssen had several years left on his contract.

"He definitely will not be back at St. John's next year," one source said.

The incident occurred during the afternoon of May 27 on the 2400 block of Diamond Street.

Police say Jordan and two other suspects arranged via Facebook to meet three men to sell a cellphone.

During the meeting, police say Jordan and the two other suspects attempted to rob the victims, who fled the scene.

Jordan allegedly shot one victim in the arm.

He was taken into custody around 2 a.m. Wednesday on the 2100 block of North 15th Street.

When initially confronted by officers, police say Jordan attempted to flee on foot, but was captured.

In June of 2015, St. Johns' announced Jordan had decided to pursue professional basketball opportunities and would not return to the University for the 2015-16 campaign, which would have been his junior season.

He played 11 games during the 2015-16 season with the Delaware 87ers of the NBA D-league, averaging 8 points per game.

NEW YORK -- As Year 1 of the Chris Mullin Era at St. John's came to a close Wednesday night before 12,604 fans at Madison Square Garden, Henry Ellenson provided the Johnnies with an instructive lesson for the future.

The 6-foot-11 freshman from Rice Lake, Wis., who looks like he will be the first one-and-done player from the Big East in three years, dominated St. John's in the paint to the tune of 27 points and 14 rebounds in a 101-93 Marquette victory that brought St. John's long and difficult season to an end.

It was Ellenson's three-pointer with three minutes remaining that gave Marquette back the lead for good after St. John's had gone ahead on a three-pointer from Ron Mvouika.

Even as St. John's hopes to add a star or two to its recruiting group in the Class of 2016, head coach Chris Mullin and his staff continue to focus on the 2017s.

Mullin and assistants Matt Abdelmassih and Greg St. Jean were at Mount St. Michael on Tuesday night to watch the CHSAA playoffs featuring 2017s Jordan Tucker of Archbishop Stepinac and Sid Wilson and Isaiah Washington of St. Raymond's, along with 2018 small forward Aundre Hyatt of Stepinac.

The 6-foot-7 Tucker is a top priority for St. John's in 2017, while the school has yet offer Wilson and Washington, according to St. Ray's coach Jorge Lopez.

NEW YORK --- St. John's may have entered Sunday's contest with a terrible 1-13 mark in Big East play, but the tilt at Madison Square Garden might as well have been a playoff game for Seton Hall.

After squandering a massive first-half lead, the Pirates edged the Johnnies 62-61 on the strength of two clutch free throws from sophomore Isaiah Whitehead with five seconds left, sparing Seton Hall from a loss that could have hurt their NCAA Tournament chances.

"It's a huge win just because if we lost, it would have damaged our resume," Whitehead told reporters after the game. "I'm really proud of us being down with seconds left and actually coming back and winning the game."

(AP) -- Federico Mussini scored all of his 17 points in the second half and St. John's ended its 16-game losing streak with an 80-65 victory over DePaul on Wednesday night.

The Red Storm (8-19, 1-13) won for the first time since a victory over Syracuse on Dec. 13. They won their first Big East conference game under first-year coach Chris Mullin and it came rather easily at Carnesecca Arena.

St. John's had a 31-24 halftime lead but things didn't look good at the start of the second half as the Blue Demons (8-17, 2-11) scored the first eight points of the half to take a 32-31 lead.

But the Red Storm got the lead right back on a rebound basket by Felix Balamou and they never gave it back. Mussini had half the points in a 14-2 run that gave St. John's a 54-37 lead with 9:12 to play. The Red Storm went on to lead by 20 with 6 minutes to play. DePaul got as close as 74-65 in the frenetic final few minutes. >> Read more

St. John's has yet to win a Big East contest this season and will take a 15-game losing streak into Saturday night's tilt with No. 1 Villanova at Wells Fargo Center.

Despite the long odds, Chris Mullin's team has an opportunity to pull off what would be a tremendous upset less than a week after the Wildcats (21-3, 11-1 Big East) were installed as the No. 1 team in the nation.

"I always talk about it being an opportunity," Mullin said Thursday on the Big East conference call. "That only comes if you play hard, unselfish, have good energy and are mentally focused on our game plan and know the personnel. Then you give yourself a chance to seize that opportunity. The preparation is so important leading up to the game. You have to put the work in to let yourself play free."

NEW YORK -- Rawle Alkins heard the overrated chants. He saw the people walking out.

He also saw Louisville head coach Rick Pitino and St. John's head coach Chris Mullin sitting in the stands. It was a game, he said, he didn't want them to see.

The 33 points was the most by a player in a Big East game this season as he powered John Thompson III's team to its fifth win in its last six games. The Hoyas host No. 6 Villanova on Saturday.

NEW YORK--- Italian sensation Federico Mussini is arguably St. John's best player at the moment and a key component of coach Chris Mullin's vision for the future.

Entering Saturday's Big East game at Marquette, the 6-foot-1 freshman guard is leading St. John's (7-9, 0-3 Big East) in scoring at 13.1 points per game and ranks second in assists at 2.5 even though he is essentially playing out of position at point guard because freshman Marcus LoVett was deemed a partial qualifier.

Mussini's path to St. John's was far from ordinary, though. His recruitment certainly didn't unfold along traditional lines.

When the five-star guard and his Word of God Academy (N.C.) team played Thon Maker and Athlete Institute on Monday in Detroit. Alkins had a huge game with Arizona head coach Sean Miller present, which got the ball rolling.

JUCO star Bashir Ahmed has committed to St. John's, giving head coach Chris Mullin and his staff their second commit in the Class of 2016.

"I made my decision to go to St. John's because I feel like St. John's is the right fit for me and my family," Ahmed said. "Being able to represent my city and play in front of my family means a lot to me. The program has a lot of potential and I believe we will be successful in winning at the highest level with all the pieces coming in my class next year.

"I have a great relationship with the assistant coach Matt (Abdelmassih), as well as with Coach Mullin and the entire coaching staff. Coach Matt has been recruiting me since he was at Iowa State and stayed consistent throughout my whole recruiting process. St. John's has a great program, great coaching staff and most importantly they have two NBA Hall of Famers in Coach Mullin and Coach Richmond. I feel like I have a lot in common with the both of them."

How crazy and unpredictable is this college basketball season?

Well, aside from the fact that Duke and Kentucky both lost to unranked teams on Saturday, I can prove (with an assist from my man Anthony E. Parelli) that Our Lady of the Lake, an NAIA team out of San Antonio, Texas that boasts a 5-3 record, is better than Syracuse, UConn and Kentucky.

You don't think I can?

NEW YORK -- Coming off a convincing win over Syracuse on Sunday at Madison Square Garden, St. John's appeared set up for a relatively easy win over Incarnate Word on Friday night.

After all, Incarnate Word is in just its third year in Division I, and was coming off a loss to a school called Our Lady of the Lake.

Think again.

NEW YORK -- Jordan Tucker sat courtside Sunday afternoon as St. John's stunned Syracuse, 84-72, before a near capacity crowd at Madison Square Garden.

The 6-foot-7 wing from White Plains (N.Y.) Archbishop Stepinac is one of coach Chris Mullin's top targets in the Class of 2017 and Tucker says the Johnnies are working harder than any other school at the moment.

"St. John's definitely since I'm a New York kid," Tucker, who also holds offers from Arizona, Maryland and Syracuse, among others, told SNY.tv.

NEW YORK -- Just 10 games into his coaching tenure, Chris Mullin has a signature win.

Coaching in just his second game at Madison Square Garden, Mulllin led St. John's to an impressive 84-72 victory over Syracuse on Sunday before a near-sellout crowd that was overwhelmingly pro-Syracuse.

"It was a big win for us," said St. John's graduate student Durand Johnson, who had 15 points. "We just gotta build off of it. We just gotta back to work and keep improving."
