Stony Brook has hired Ohio State assistant coach Jeff Boals as it new head coach, a source with direct knowledge told SNY.tv.

Boals replaces Steve Pikiell, who left to take the Rutgers job after leading the Seawolves to their first NCAA Tournament appearance. Jay Young, Pikiell's associate head coach at Stony Brook, had been in the mix to take over for his old boss but instead will join Pikiell at Rutgers.

"Stony Brook's a great place, there's great people there and I love those kids," Pikiell told SNY.tv and NJ.com at a coaches' clinic at Roselle Catholic on Friday. "Jeff does a great job, so I wish him luck and I'll try to help him any way I can."

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) -- Maybe John Calipari was onto something when he suggested Kentucky was under-seeded.

Jamal Murray led five players in double figures with 19 points and the fourth-seeded Wildcats, behind an NCAA Tournament-record 15 blocked shots, routed Stony Brook 85-57 on Thursday night to set up a showdown with rival Indiana in the second round on Saturday.

"Every game you play in this tournament is like a rivalry game," Calipari said of playing Indiana. "Everybody is going to play with high energy. I said after the game, my opinion, [Tom] Crean is the National Coach of the Year for what he did...

When he was home in New Jersey last spring and summer, Stony Brook's Jameel Warney would stop by his old school, Roselle Catholic, and play pickup basketball games in the school's spacious gym.

There he sometimes met up with Isaiah Briscoe, the 6-foot-3 guard who led Roselle Catholic to the New Jersey Tournament of Champions title last year and is now a freshman guard at Kentucky.

"[We were on] different teams," the 6-8 265-pound Warney told me by phone on Monday. "I probably won, I don't even remember."

Jameel Warney didn't want to live through Groundhog Day again.

For more than a half, it appeared that he and his Stony Brook teammates might, though. They had lost in the America East championship game four times in the last five years -- each time by a close margin -- and now trailed Vermont by as many as 15 points in yet another America East title game.

But the 6-foot-9 Plainfield, N.J., native took the game over in the paint and went off for a career-high 43 points and 10 rebounds as he willed his team to an 80-74 victory that secured Stony Brook's first automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. Warney's 43 points on 18-for-22 shooting tied Vermont's Taylor Coppenrath for the most ever scored in an America East title game.

STONY BROOK, N.Y. -- Stony Brook's Jameel Warney did more than just secure Long Island bragging rights for the Seawolves Sunday afternoon.

He took another step in solidifying his NBA potential.

Scouts from all 30 NBA teams have seen the former Roselle (N.J.) Catholic standout at some point this season, with a handful in attendance on this day as well. And the big man did not disappoint, finishing with 22 points and 9 rebounds in Stony Brook's 73-68 win over Hofstra. But for all the attention he commands for his scoring and rebounding, there are other aspects of Warney's game that make him an attractive prospect at the professional level.

The New York Giants will look no further than Long Island for a possible backfield addition.

The Giants, along with the Jets and Patriots, will host Stony Brook running back Miguel Maysonet for private workouts over the next month.

Maysonet, who played his high school ball in Riverhead, N.Y. prior to attending Stony Brook, ran a 4.45 40-yard dash last week at the Seawolves' pro day. The time would have been the best at the NFL Combine for running backs, but Maysonet missed the combine due to a hamstring injury.
