Mets third baseman Todd Frazier rounded third base Thursday at Citi Field after hitting a walk-off homer and found a strange obstacle in his way at home plate -- the umpire.

Home plate ump Tom Hallion was standing directly on top of the plate as Frazier came through, with Frazier bumping him out of the way before turning his head and appearing to say something to Hallion.

It's normal protocol for the home plate ump to make sure a player crosses the plate on a game-winning hit, but not normal for that ump to stand on top of the plate like this...

Todd Frazier explains what really happened with his alleged "diving catch" on Monday in Los Angeles.

On Monday night, Mets 3B Todd Frazier made an insane catch as he tumbled into the third-base seats against the Dodgers. But did he actually make the grab?

SNY's Steve Gelbs did a little investigating on the matter, and he found out that Frazier actually didn't make the catch. Instead, he fooled the umpire with a heads-up play of his own.

Matthew Cerrone (Twitter | Instagram | About Me): As expected, the Mets did not trade Jacob deGrom or Noah Syndergaard before the trade deadline, despite both pitchers being capable of bringing back a collection of top prospects.

The lack of action could mean the Mets did not see an offer worth accepting. Or, after doing their due diligence, they decided to keep their best two pitchers because they can have them through the 2020 season, sign them to long-term extensions, or look to trade them this winter with more teams involved in the bidding.

During the past few weeks, the Dodgers, Yankees, Padres, Phillies, and Braves were all reportedly looking for an elite starting pitcher under team control. More importantly, all five of the above teams had the necessary prospects required by the Mets. None of them landed a top pitcher, but the Pirates came out of nowhere to trade for No. 2 type starter Chris Archer with about 30 minutes to go before the deadline.

Mets 3B Todd Frazier went 0-for-2 and popped out to short in both of his at-bats on Sunday afternoon in his second consecutive rehab start with Single-A St. Lucie.

Frazier was removed from the game in the middle of the fifth inning due to a rain delay, reports Tim Healy of Newsday. He went 1-for-2 with a double and two RBI in his first rehab game with St. Lucie on Saturday night.

Frazier has started at third base in both games and departed during the fifth inning both times. If it wasn't for a rain delay, Frazier likely would have played deeper into the game.

Jose Reyes is hitting .168/.238/.235 in 64 games (130 plate appearances) this season while being worth -2 DRS at third base and -3 DRS at shortstop.

Beyond Reyes being unable to get on base, hit for power, or field at an average level, he is also no longer a true stolen base threat.

Despite the above, Mickey Callaway said Monday that with Todd Frazier out, Reyes "deserves" to start regularly at third base.

Mets 3B Todd Frazier has been placed on the 10-day DL due to a "little rib muscle pull," manager Mickey Callaway said before Monday's doubleheader at Citi Field.

The injury happened during Frazier's at-bats on Sunday and got progressively worse as the game went along. With Frazier out, the Mets have recalled Ty Kelly from Triple-A Las Vegas.

Callaway discussed whether the Mets considered Triple-A infielder Jeff McNeil, who is hitting .393/.453/.655 with four HR in 21 games for Vegas this season after hitting .327/.402/.626 with 14 HR in 57 games for Double-A Binghamton.

I still can't find anyone in baseball that believes the Mets will deal Jacob deGrom this summer, even though the organization is currently seeing back-channel interest in him and Noah Syndergaard.

Why won't deGrom be traded? Here are the three most common reasons I heard from rival insiders..

1) Fill-in GMs J.P. Ricciardi and John Ricco are both expected to interview this October when ownership begins vetting candidates to be their new, permanent GM. In that case, it will be much more safe for Ricciardi and Ricco to keep their aces and, instead, pitch a more thoughtful plan to ownership this winter. Because, if they make a mistake now and botch a deal for deGrom today, they can kiss goodbye their chances of ever becoming the team's GM...

The Mets will be pitched by teams looking to acquire Jacob deGrom and Noah Syndergaard. However, despite all the buzz, I expect both pitchers will continue being Mets at least through the next two seasons.

Frankly, the only way I see either of these two pitchers being traded is if a new GM and front office takes the wheel. Otherwise, it's ride or die with deGrom and Syndergaard for Sandy Alderson.

Similarly, while there will be interest in (and it's worth listening to offers for) Seth Lugo and Robert Gsellman, my hunch is Alderson would prefer to keep them as well -- especially given the delicate state of his rotation.

Frazier doesn't want a re-build 00:01:06
After another tough loss, Todd Frazier makes the case for the Mets to stay together and not trade away starting pitchers for prospects.

Veteran 3B Todd Frazier joined the Mets with the vision of winning. He wasn't looking for a rebuild.

It was reported by SNY's Andy Martino that the Mets are having "internal discussions" about whether they want to hear offers on their stud flamethrowers in Jacob deGrom and Noah Syndergaard.

If one or both of these arms end up moving by the trade deadline, Frazier wouldn't be happy.

The Mets made a number of free agent pick-ups this past offseason, some of whom -- such as Jay Bruce -- are struggling and some of whom - such as Anthony Swarzak - have missed significant time due to injury. But through much of the chaos of the tumultuous 2018 season, Todd Frazier has been the steady, consistent leader the Mets were looking for to man third base.

When Frazier signed a 2 year, $17 million dollar contract this February, it was the team's first step towards filling the hole left by David Wright at third base. While Frazier cannot match the statistical prowess of his perennial All-Star predecessor, nor his decade of experience as a Met, he is providing much-needed value both on and off the field.

Frazier has never had eye-popping numbers, but his performance throughout his career has been remarkably consistent. And this year is no different. His .744 OPS is just short of his career average, though notably much of that production came in hitters' havens such as Cincinnati. His .333 on base percentage is significantly higher than his career mark and, along with his impressive walk rate, demonstrates his ongoing commitment to a more patient approach at the plate that is helping him succeed as he enters his mid-thirties...

The Mets will be getting some reinforcements before Tuesday night's game, with Todd Frazier and Anthony Swarzak being activated from the disabled list.

New York needed to clear two 25-man roster spots to make room for Frazier and Swarzak, and did so by optioning RH reliever Gerson Bautista to Triple-A Las Vegas and DFA'ing LH reliever Buddy Baumann. By removing two relievers from the roster, the Mets now have a seven-man bullpen.

Meanwhile, while Jose Reyes wasn't be DFA'd on Tuesday, his job is not safe long-term or even in the near future, SNY's Andy Martino wrote Monday.

The Mets are in a serious rut, only one game over .500, after scoring just six runs over their last four games. In 11 games this month, they are averaging 2.4 runs per game -- by far the worst rate in baseball -- and gone 2-9 in that span.

There is talent, if not much depth, in the Mets lineup. Yoenis Cespedes, Todd Frazier, and Asdrubal Cabrera are all strong hitters, with Brandon Nimmo showing signs of a real breakout, and Adrian Gonzalez seemingly rescuing his career from the brink. So why has a team that showed a solidly average offensive ability for the first five weeks of the season suddenly fallen off a cliff?

To begin with, they simply are not making solid contact at all this month. Their hard hit rate is under 32 percent -- dead last in MLB -- and their soft hit rate is over 21 percent -- also dead last. They are not using the whole field, which makes them vulnerable to the shift, and are hitting more pop-ups than any other team. In light of this kind of a batted ball profile, their .269 batting average on balls in play for the month of May might even be considered overperforming.

Michelle Ioannou, MetsBlog | TwitterThis week in Mets Land was the week of babies. Jay Bruce and his wife, Hannah, welcomed a son named Maxwell -- their second child. But that's not all. David Wright and his wife, Molly, welcomed their second child -- a baby girl named Madison.

In terms of on the field action... eh. There were two wins, a rainout, and three losses. One important and reassuring factor is that Michael Conforto has broken out of his slump, helping the Mets win in Monday night's game when he returned from his mental health break, and hitting a go-ahead homer in the ninth inning of Friday night's game.

Speaking of Friday night's game, it was a come from behind win, like the ones we saw in the month of April. And that was reassuring to both the fans and the team -- that the Mets still do have it in them; that they can rally and win. We even saw the Mets try to do this in Sunday afternoon's game, but it unfortunately didn't happen...

Callaway, Flores on Mets' skid 00:01:12
Mets manager Mickey Callaway and infielder Wilmer Flores talk about the team's recent struggles at the plate.

The Mets have gone 7-16 since starting the season 11-1. And their downward spiral culminated on Wednesday, when they lost their three-game series to the National League-worst Reds in Cincinnati.

Manager Mickey Callaway, who faced questions about the lineup snafu that cost the Mets a scoring chance in the first inning on Wednesday, said "It's tough right now," but is staying even-keeled.

Danny Abriano, SNY.tv | Twitter | If the Mets had won Wednesday's game, the lineup incident would've been a funny aside. Instead, it's a main topic. But in the grand scheme of things, I couldn't give less of a damn about it. What I give a damn about is how the season has spiraled out of control with no immediate fix on the horizon...

Frazier on frustration with umps 00:02:01
Mets third baseman Todd Frazier voices his frustration over what he believes to be poor umpiring this season.

It was natural for the Mets to be frustrated after losing their first-place seat following another loss to the Braves, and even more so when Jacob deGrom abruptly left his start with a hyperextended right elbow.

But Todd Frazier's frustration about Wednesday's night contest didn't stem from either of those cases. Instead, he had a bone to pick with the umpires.

In the bottom of the ninth inning, Frazier was seen talking back to the home plate umpire Lance Barrett after a questionable strike call. The umpire even had to call timeout to talk with the third baseman.

Mets on comeback win over Nats 00:06:26
Mets manager Mickey Callaway and players discuss Matz's start and the resiliency the club put on display in its nine-run eighth inning.

The Mets didn't want to get reverse swept by the Nationals on their home field. A nine-run eighth inning is definitely a way to avoid that.

Down 4-2 heading into the bottom of the eighth, Michael Conforto and Yoenis Cespedes got things started with back-to-back singles. After an Asdrubal Cabrera single to load the bases, it was Todd Frazier that tied the game with an RBI single smashed back up the middle off Nats reliever Ryan Madson

Now tied 4-4, Juan Lagares had the bases loaded himself with two outs. With a two-strike count, he roped a double down the right field line to score two, giving the Mets their first lead of the game...

Mets 3B Todd Frazier entered Friday's contest without any home runs through the first 11 games of the season. By the end of the night, he had his first two instead of one.

In his first at-bat of the night, Frazier took a Zach Davies hanging slider deep to the Mets apple in centerfield for his first homer on the season.

Getting accustomed to a new team is usually hard for players, unless your name is Todd Frazier.

The veteran third baseman, who is known as a great clubhouse presence, immediately fit his way into the Mets' locker room. Bonds were made quickly with his new teammates, but the main one that has stuck out is his friendship with slugging OF Yoenis Cespedes.

"He is the one player that every team would love to have," Cespedes told The Post's Kevin Kernan. "His energy is unbelievable."

There's no silver lining, not when another team is spraying champagne down the hall. It'll take some winter to get to the bright side for these Yankees after losing the AL Championship Series and that's OK.

They should let the sting settle in and fester a little. They failed to take advantage of two chances to eliminate the Astros. No matter how loaded with talent the Yankees are, and no matter how many of their lauded minor-leaguers are vying for high spots on the prospect lists, each trip to the postseason is precious because who the heck knows when the next one is coming.
