The Devils open the season Thursday night at 7:30 against the Panthers in Florida.

According to STATS...

  • The Panthers topped 100 points for the first time as they claimed their first Atlantic Division title last season. Florida ranked seventh overall with 2.44 goals against per game, just barely edging out 1996-97 (2.45) for the fewest in franchise history.
  • The Devils saw a six-win improvement last season but still missed out on the playoffs for the fourth season in a row in 2015-16. The four-year playoff drought is the second-longest in team history following a nine-year absence from 1978-79 through 1986-87.
  • Jaromir Jagr was second on the Panthers in both goals (27) and assists (39), but led the team with 66 points. It was Jagr's 18th season with 65+ points, tied with Ron Francis and Wayne Gretzky for the second most in NHL history (Gordie Howe leads with 20).
  • Adam Henrique and Kyle Palmieri tied with a team-high 30 goals last season. It marked the first time the Devils had multiple 30-goal scorers since the trio of Ilya Kovalchuk (37), Zach Parise (31), and David Clarkson (30) in 2011-12.
  • Roberto Luongo was tied for fourth in the NHL last season with 35 wins, matching his franchise record from 2005-06. Luongo's six seasons with at least 35 wins ranks sixth all-time, trailing only Marc-Andre Fleury (7) and Henrik Lundqvist (7) for the most among active goalies.
  • Cory Schneider set a new career-high last season with 27 wins, the most by a Devil since Martin Brodeur's 31 in 2011-12. Schneider led all NHL goaltenders last season with a save percentage of .920 or better in 37 games.

The Devils squeaked by with a 2-1 shootout win over Buffalo, but despite 35 shots on goal, the squad still struggled to pick up a win in regulation (Fire and Ice, Feb. 19).

The team posted 30-plus shots for the first time in 10 games, but it came down to Scott Gomez, who netted the deciding goal in the shootout.

?We had 20 (scoring) chances,? said Devils GM and interim coach Lou Lamoriello. ?The first thing you look at is chances to score and chances against. We had plenty of opportunities and that's all you can ask for. The win, I was pleased with the way we did a lot of things tonight: the penalty kill and the power play had a lot of good looks and 5-on-5 we were creating chances. We just have to put them in the net.?

Not so long ago, the Devils put together a string of games that saw them post 20 goals in a seven game span, which was an average of 2.86 goals per game. Now, this team has struggled to score, tallying just four goals over their last three games, two of which have been losses.

Aside from Jaromir Jagr and more recently, Patrik Elias, and to some extent Ryan Carter, the Devils have struggled to score. With the goaltending turning in a strong performance almost every night, it's almost safe to say that two goals may get this team at least a point in more games than not. Scoring that second and even a third goal, has been a major struggle as of late.
