Andy Martino, SNY.tv | Twitter | The Yankees and Red Sox played an early-season classic of a series this week, hinting at a thrilling summer to come in the American League East. It ended with a piece of intrigue to chew on: Was Aaron Boone wrong to send Dellin Betances out for a second inning of relief on Thursday night?

Betances has quietly become more reliable of late, but his initial assignment in this game served as a reminder of his reduced role. Boone summoned the onetime setup man in the seventh, with the Yanks trailing, 4-0. Betances pitched a perfect frame, then watched his offense erase the deficit by scoring four runs in the bottom of the frame.

There came the controversial moment...

In order for the Yankees to build on a surprising and inspiring 2017 season, the club will need to receive the dominant efforts many expect from their late-inning relievers.

As we preview expectations for the coming season, we'll take the relievers in the order I believe Yankees skipper Aaron Boone will open the season if he was to utilize a strict inning-by-inning methodology to complete games (he probably won't).

Despite being held to two runs and 10 hits in Games 1 and 2, the Yankees exploded for three runs in the second inning and five runs in the fourth as they remained undefeated at home in the postseason and cut the series deficit to 2-1.

After Starlin Castro and Aaron Hicks both hit two-out singles off Astros starter Charlie Morton in the bottom of the second inning, Frazier lunged to hit a 1-1 fastball over the right-field fence to give New York a 3-0 lead.

In the fourth inning, Chase Headley recorded the first hit by a Yankees designated hitter this postseason by driving in Greg Bird with a two-out single. Morton then hit Brett Gardner to load the bases and was replaced by Will Harris, who threw a wild pitch that scored Frazier and then surrendered a 371-foot home run to Judge that blew the game wide open.

After becoming the 10th team in MLB history to come back from a 2-0 deficit in a best-of-five playoff series, the Yankees are again the underdog when they face the Houston Astros in the ALCS.

The Yankees have an advantage over many teams when it comes to their bullpen, but it's not where you might believe. Yes, the endgame quartet of Tommy Kahnle, David Robertson, Dellin Betances and Aroldis Chapman is not rivaled by many clubs, but assembling a dominant backend of the bullpen is fairly common in today's game.

However, some organizations are also changing their methods of bullpen assembly in the middle innings. Yankees are now dominating in this area, courtesy of right-handers Chad Green and Adam Warren.

The rotation

Every single spot in the Yankees' rotation comes with at least a small amount of uncertainty.

Yankees ace Masahiro Tanaka has pitched quite well since joining the team, yet he throws with a ticking time bomb in the form of a partial tear in his ulnar collateral ligament. New York Yankees RHP Adam Warren will be a reliever to open the regular season while Luis SeverinoChad Green, and Jordan Montgomery will compete for two rotation spots, manager Joe Girardi said to Newsday's Erik Boland.

Warren, who had been considered for a rotation spot earlier this spring, had a 4.80 ERA in five Grapefruit League outings (four starts), allowing eight runs and 13 hits in 15 innings.

Though he spent most of last season as a reliever with both the Yankees and Chicago Cubs, he split time in the rotation and bullpen with the Yankees in 2015, going 6-6 with a 3.66 ERA in 17 starts and 1-1 with a 2.29 ERA in 26 relief outings.

New York Yankees manager Joe Girardi is mulling over Luis Severino and Adam Warren for a possible spot in the rotation as Opening Day nears.

The two pitchers have had vastly different springs, and Sunday's game -- a 6-4 win over the Houston Astros -- was a huge example of it.

Warren gave up one run and four hits in 3 2/3 innings as the starter, while Severino, pitching in relief, gave up three runs, six hits and two walks in 3 1/3 innings.

Bullpen use is evolving in the Major Leagues and if there is a team that has a chance to utilize one of the "new" nuances, it is the New York Yankees.

I'm not speaking of the best relievers coming into games in the fifth or sixth inning as we saw often during the 2016 postseason. While the Indians' deployment of Andrew Miller demonstrated how effective teams can be when they employ relievers that are not only dominant, but can also last more than one inning in the process, such use throughout the regular season is seen as unrealistic.

The Yankees have two dominant relievers in Dellin Betances and Aroldis Chapman, but each of them should be relegated to one-inning performances for the most part this season. If the club reaches the postseason, they could extend their appearances, but I don't expect it to happen often in the regular season.

  • CC Sabathia made his first start of Spring Training, tossing two scorelss innings while allowing two hits, one walk, and striking out two.
  • Adam Warren allowed two runs on four hits (including two home runs) while walking one and striking out none in three innings. Warren, who is battling for a spot in the starting rotation, has a 3.38 ERA this spring.

Spring Training baseball is filled with surprising developments and Yankees camp has been no different. Yet, we all know that some of what happens in is quickly dispelled as it progresses, or dissipates as teams head north to begin the regular season. With the Yankees off to a 9-3 start, which performances can the team confidently embrace?

One of the Yankees' biggest questions heading into spring training centered on Aaron Judge's ability to make the necessary adjustments to his swing and approach at the plate as he competes for the starting right field job. The common belief was if Judge, who turns 25 years old in April, failed to display significant improvement at the plate, he would find himself in Triple-A at the start of the season...

Matt Holliday, Greg Bird and Billy McKinney homered to lead the Yankees past the Orioles, 8-1, on Thursday night in Tampa.

  • Bird's two-run homer was his third of the spring.
  • Holliday hit a solo shot for his first home run.
  • McKinney went 2-for-2 with three RBIs, homering for the second time.

Bullpens continue to grow into a major facet of a club's makeup. It's no longer enough to have some decent relievers and a strong closer. Rather, teams focus on building formidable backend combinations, which in some cases stretch five relievers strong.

The known

Battles in spring training are as common as tired arms and late swings. However, when a rotation competition goes two roles deep and has five competitors, some might question the team's reasoning.

Why such an expanded competition?

Yankees manager Joe Girardi spoke with the media on Tuesday in Tampa. Here's what we learned...

  • RHP Masahiro Tanaka will get the start on Opening Day.
  • The plan is to use Matt Holiday primarily as a designated hitter.
  • RHP Adam Warren will start games during Spring Training and have a chance to win a spot in the rotation.

While a good number of players have already reported to Tampa, Tuesday marks the official beginning of spring training for the New York Yankees. As any other club, the Yankees have several areas of uncertainty which they hope will be resolved by April.

The Yankees made infielder Starlin Castro available in trade talks this offseason, according to Joel Sherman of the New York Post.

"Meanwhile, the Yankees have been unable to deal Brett GardnerChase Headley or Starlin Castro, who they let some clubs know was available," wrote Sherman. "To date, that has kept them from pushing for a pricey reliever."

The 26-year-old was acquired by New York last offseason in the deal that sent RHP Adam Warren to the Cubs.
