The Mets scored five times in the final two innings, but it was not enough to overcome an early 7-0 deficit. Why were the Mets down big? Domingo Tapia was wild in his return from the DL with a burned (non) pitching hand: 0.1 IP, 2 H, 6 R, 6 ER, 4 BB, 0 K, HBP. Just yuck. It was his first game in 19 days, but that's not good.

3B Aderlin Rodriguez lined a single to center in the bottom of the tenth to give St. Lucie the win in extra innings. Rodriguez, who was 3-for-5 with a double, a homer, ?and 3 RBI is hot. The big guy is hitting .317/.356/.683 (!) in his last ten. He's part of a six-way tie for second in the FSL in homers. A slow start has held his overall line down to .234/.263/.476 in 31 games. He lost a bunch of weight this winter, to help his agility in the field, but he's all about the bat. I suspect he will be a first baseman by the time he reaches the big leagues. Like Cesar Puello a level above him, Rodriguez will need to learn to walk more as his 23/5 K/BB ratio in 31 games attests. That strikeout rate of 16% is fine for a guy with his kind of power, but he's walked in just 3.8% of his plate appearances. ?He must become more patient.

Alex Panteliodis started (5 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 4 K, 1 HR).

RHP Matt Bowman picked up plenty of support in his advanced-A debut. Bowman was fine: 6 IP, 6 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 1 BB, 7 K. He held the Cubs off the scoreboard through the first four innings, so perhaps they started to figure him out in the fifth.

On a night when the Mets scored 13 and bopped three homers, there were plenty of strong offensive performances. The most important to me is 3B Aderlin Rodriguez who was 2-for-5 with a homer, his fifth. His nice night pulled him up to .218/.250/.437 for the year. He ended Tuesday with a- .687 OPS his highest since the second day of the season. Again, the power is real.

It's taken a while (like a month) but it looks like 3B Aderlin Rodriguez is starting to get going. Monday, he was 2-for-4 with a two doubles and three RBI. Four of his six hits in May have gone for extra-bases. In his last 10 games, the 21-year-old hitting like he should in the FSL: .282/.341/.513 with four walks and six strikeouts. All told, 14 of his 24 hits this year have gone for extra-bases, but he's still hitting just .211/.244/.404 this year in 29 games. His bat is going to have to carry him, but there's reason to believe in the bat: he has the best power in the system.

Hansel Robles?(pictured) returned from a two-week hiatus with one of his better outings of the year: 5 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 5 K. In 26.2 innings, while facing 104 total batters, he's walked six (6% walk rate) and fanned 21 (20% k rate).

At age 21, Aderlin Rodriguez is hitting .206/.235/.393 with 12 extra-base hits and a .187 isolated slugging percentage in advanced-A. On the other side, Twins' top prospect Miguel Sano was 3-for-4 with a homer, his 10th (!!) of the year. Sano, who will turn 20 next week is hitting .377/.446/.755 with 19 (!) extra-base hits and a .378 isolated slugging percentage. That is crazy. Sano has drawn 12 walks to Aderlin's four. The one blemish on Sano's game: the 32 whiffs in 28 games. All the same, he's slugging .755 ing the FSL where there's no one else above .571.

Last week, Major League teams faced the deadline for adding players to their 40-man roster. Prospects who are not on the 40-man roster and have been around for a while (five drafts if they signed at 18 or younger, or four if they signed at 19 or older) are eligible to be selected by another team. Remember, players who are selected in the Major League phase must be kept on the drafting team's 25-man roster the entire subsequent season, or returned to their original team, for a small fee.

The Mets added RHP Zack Wheeler, RHP Hansel Robles, RHP Gonzalez Germen and RHP Greg Burke, LHP Darin Gorski and INF Wilfredo Tovar to the 40-man roster last week.

The only really notable omission: slugging 3B/1B Aderlin Rodriguez. Rodriguez, who turned 21 in October, has the most power of any Mets player below AAA, and it's not really close. In 125 games between Savannah in the South Atlantic League and St. Lucie in advanced-A, he hit .263/.321/.476 with 26 doubles and an organization-leading 24 homers. Was leaving him unprotected him a mistake?

Instructional League started for the Mets a week ago. It's basically like spring training in the fall for the team's better prospects who can expect to start 2013 at St. Lucie and below, which includes Savannah, Brooklyn and Kingsport, or were drafted in 2012. Guys who have been around for a few years and are looking at AA for next year, including college pitchers who were drafted before 2012, do not usually go to instructs.

There are drills and fundamentals work in the morning. Some days the guys play split-squad games and sometimes they make the drive down to Jupiter to play the Marlins or Cardinals or host one of those teams in Port St. Lucie.

Instructs does not generate any useful statistics, but who attends instructs is the first valuable piece of information, and sometimes updated scouting reports are illuminating. Also, often position switches begin in instructs where there is the time to really teach and drill.

Lets skip past game one to game two, where 3B Aderlin Rodriguez was 3-for-3 with two homers and 3 RBI. In 15 games in August, the 20-year old ?is hitting .298/.344/.632 with six homers. That'll play. He's up to 24 homers this year as part of a .266/.326/.492 in 117 games between Savannah and St. Lucie playing his home games in two places that are tough to hit homeruns. Rodriguez has struck out less in the FSL - 18% - than he did in either of his two periods of play with Savannah. There are plenty of questions here, but the man has tremendous power. If the Mets were willing to put Wilmer Flores on the 40-man roster last winter, Rodriguez should go on this year. In fact, I think you could make the argument that Rodriguez at the end of 2012 is closer to the big leagues than Flores at the end of 2011.

- St. Lucie 3B Aderlin Rodriguez has been out of the lineup for the last week with an irritation in his right eye that was giving him "a little trouble with vision." ?He is expected back tonight. The 20-year old has hit 26 doubles and 22 homers this year between Savannah and St. Lucie and is easily the top power-hitting prospect in the system. He had just started to turn it on in August as well in St. Lucie, ripping four homerun in his seven games in the month as part of a .321/.387/.786 line in seven games.

- RHP Tyler Pill was removed from his August 9th start in St. Lucie after just two innings with what was I was originally told was forearm tightness. However, when Pill, last year's fourth round pick, was placed on the disabled list this week, the diagnosis was altered to triceps tendonitis. 3B Aderlin Rodriguez was 1-for-4 with a two-run homer in the first inning. That's back-to-back games with a bomb for the 20-year old and four in his last five contests. After a three week adjustment period in July in advanced-A when he hit .206/.260/.353, Rodriguez is banging .321/.387/.786 wiht four homers in seven games in August. For the year, he's up to 26 doubles and 22 home runs as part of a .266/.327/.493 line. More than half of his 110 hits have gone for extra-bases.

He might not stay at third, although apparently he's working harder at improving at the position. On the other hand, his bat has the power to carry across the diamond and make an impact at first base. I get at least an email a week asking if it makes sense for the Mets to move Rodriguez to the outfield to solve two problems: fortifying the Mets' future bleak outfield and moving Rodriguez from a position where he might be blocked by David Wright. The answer remains a resounding, "no." Rodriguez has well below average speed and at best, would be a below average outfielder. If he can't stick at third, he's going to first.

Interesting promotion today when?3B Aderlin Rodriguez was promoted from Savannah to advanced-A St. Lucie while Brooklyn 1B Cole Frenzel was promoted to Savannah to take his place. Rodriguez is 20 and really turned a big corner early this year.

Leave aside Rodriguez's overall .274/.336/.497 line in 83 games this year for a moment. In 59 games since May 1, he has hit .307/.368/.555 with 15 doubles, 13 homers, 21 walks and 47 strikeouts. In that time, he's walked in 8.6% of his plate appearances and struck out in 19.3% of his plate appearances. He did all of this in a ballpark that kills power numbers.

Domingo Tapia, pitching at home in Savannah for the first time since May 23rd, did not begin well. In the top of the first inning on a sweltering afternoon in Savannah (94 degrees officially and muggy at first pitch) he walked the leadoff man. A flyout and a pair of singles gave the RiverDogs a 1-0 lead. After a strikeout, and a wild pitch, he gave up a sharp single through the left side past the reach of SS Matt Reynolds to a left-handed batter that plated two runs. ?An unearned run in the second inning put the 'Dogs up 4-0.

Then Tapia started rolling. From the second inning on, he retired the 16 of the final 17 batters he faced, and from the third inning on, the final 13 batters in a row. Of those last 13 batters, he allowed two flyballs, nine ground balls, and fanned two. He needed 41 pitches in the first two innings and then 41 over the next five. Everyone in the stadium knew it was possible, likely even, when Aderlin Rodriguez stepped to the plate leading off the bottom of the 10th inning in a scoreless game. Four pitches and a missile of a homerun to leftfield later, the Gnats had a 1-0 win. ?It was his second game in a row with a homerun, and his third in his last four games. With 15 homeruns overall, he's now tied for second in the SAL, and his 36 extra-base hits are tied for fourth. Once again for fun: since May 1, the 20-year old has hit .312/.374/.563 with 26 extra-base hits and 20 walks in 54 games.

And then there was the defense. He committed his 17th error of the year. In the fourth inning, with one out, he moved to his left to cut off a chopper. He was there, but as he reached out for the ball, he looked over his shoulder to check on SS Matt Reynolds. That diversion of his attention, cost him the ability to field the ball cleanly. However, Marte's fielding error to begin the fifth of the year, led to a two-run inning, and an unearned run.

RHP Gonzalez Germen was eh: 6 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 3 BB, 6 K and Armando Rodriguez allowed a pair of runs in his two innings of work behind Germen.

Another o-for, this time an 0-for-3 dropped Reese Havens to .132/.246/.226 in 16 games in AA this year. He's hitless in his last six games. The good news is that a couple of big games will turn his line around dramatically. The bad news is that he's now 25 in AA and off to a slow start in a season that was again delayed by injury.

Aderlin Rodriguez seems to be improving defensively. Since committing three errors on Opening night, and five errors in the first three games of the year,?has committed just two errors in his last 24 games in the field. Actually, he's gone 16 straight games in the field, 14 at third and 2 at first, without an error.

It's a small sign of progress. He has plenty of arm for third, it's really all about his hands, reactions and reads off the bat.

So sharp question by a commenter earlier today.

@ St. Lucie Mets 8, Dunedin Blue Jays 0 (7 innings)

Chase Huchingson had a rough game one and the Mets were three hit. Huchingson's line: 5 IP, 7 H, 5 R, 5 ER, 4 BB, 6 K, WP. Since beginning the season with 17.2 scoreless innings over three starts, Huchingson has yielded 10 runs, nine earned, on 17 hits and 12 walks in his last 14.2 IP. The walks are particularly damning. He's issued a 16 in 32.1 IP for a 4.4 BB/9 ratio.

Cory Mazzoni is just cruising through the Florida State League so far. Monday: 5 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 4 K. His three-start line: 16 IP, 13 H, 4 R, 2 ER, 0 HR, 4 BB, 11 K. I've been told he's sitting in the low 90s, but can reach back for 94 when he needs it.

3B Wilmer Flores picked up a couple of singles, a walk and two stolen bases(?!?). For a little bit of context, he stole just two bases in the entire 2011 season over 133 games. All eight of his hits so far in 2012 have been singles.

The interesting stuff begins with who is not on the St. Lucie Mets roster. Darrell Ceciliani was placed on the St. Lucie Mets' disabled list with a strained right hamstring. Meanwhile, Sunday, Cory Vaughn was placed on the temporary inactive list.

On the field, the Mets scored five times in the seventh and eighth innings to overcome a 4-1 deficit. The team's four-run seventh was keyed by a two-run double from C Francisco Pena. The 22-year old Pena has five hits this year and four have gone for extra-bases.

A+: @ St. Lucie Mets 4, Bradenton Marauders (PIT) 2?

LHP Chase Huchingson was story #1 in his advanced-A debut: 6.2 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 0 R, 1 BB, 5 K, 1 WP. Huchingson no-hit the Marauders through 4.2 innings and all three of the hits he allowed were singles.

(I don't know what the hell the box score is counting for pitches, but it had Huchingson throwing 32 strikes and 37 pitches total. ?Oh, MiLB.com, how cute.)

At Baseball Prospectus, Kevin Goldstein collected some comments from scouts and executives about players in spring training in Florida. An unnamed "evaluator" on Aderlin Rodriguez:

?I thought he'd hit last year,? said the evaluator. ?And if you look at all of the numbers, the strikeouts were not out of control. After seeing him again this Spring, I still believe in the bat.?

Take a look at the video of Aderlin Rodriguez swinging this spring.

Yesterday, we looked at a bunch of guys who played third base in the upper minors, and are unlikely to be successors to David Wright. ?Today, lets move down the chain and check out two interesting a-ballers who just might be the Mets' third basemen in a post-Wright world, if the Mets ever have to face a post-Wright world.

A+On the surface, Jefry Marte had a disappointing regular season, hitting .248/.313/.346 in 131 games for St. Lucie after spending the previous two years in Savannah. ?On the other hand, the mitigating factors for Marte are his age - he turned 20 in June, and the league - the FSL hit .262/.331/.386. ?Marte got off to a hot start in April (.321/.396/.524 - 5 2B, 4 HR), producing the most extra-base hits of any month in 2011 in his first try. ?However, as the summer wore on, he wore down, hitting just .210/.263/.284 in the second half.

One reason for optimism about Marte's offensive game: his 2011 strikeout rate of 16% was his lowest in his three years of full-season baseball, a full 6% lower than his 22% whiff rate in 2009 with Savannah. ? A second reason for optimism: his strong Arizona Fall League performance, in which he had an equal number of walks and strikeouts (12 in 22 games) or 12.8% of plate appearances. ?That kind of strike zone control is a very large step forward.

Greensboro Grasshoppers 12, @ Savannah Sand Gnats 10

One strike. The Gnats were one strike away from the South Atlantic League Championship with a 9-8 lead in the top of the ninth inning Friday night. LHP Brandon Sage had a 1-2 count on the Grasshoppers' leadoff man, Noah Perio with the tying run at third. The crowd was on their feet. Perio slapped the 1-2 through the left side to score the tying run. The 'Hoppers eventually scored three runs in the 11th against Ronny Morla to capture game four and send the series to a winner-take-all game five.

The Gnats will host game five Saturday at 6:05 pm.

Savannah Sand Gnats 7, @ Greensboro Grasshoppers 3

There were many nice performances in this one as the Gnats earned a split of the first two games of the SAL Championship series on the road. ?The series now shifts to Savannah, where it becomes a best-of-three. ?Oh, and the Gnats are 50-22 at home this year.

The first star of this one: Yohan Almonte. ?Working in relief of starter Gonzalez Germen who fought through three innings, Almonte came in and threw five scoreless innings. ?If the Greensboro stadium gun was accurate, Almonte was sitting at 90 mph. ?He also did a really nice job with his slider at the bottom of the zone and out of the zone.
