Ahmad Bradshaw

The Giants have had recent success this past decade because they brought in some extraordinary players with skill, heart and toughness. RB Ahmad Bradshaw and WR Hakeem Nicks were two of those players.

This coming Monday they will be at MetLife Stadium again, but on the opposing sidelines with their new team, the Indianapolis Colts. Most of the football-watching public are well aware that these ex-Giant veterans are experiencing a second chapter of their careers alongside the NFL's newest superstar, QB Andrew Luck.

Multiple sources are reporting that former Giants RB Ahmad Bradshaw's tenure with the Colts is over after just one season.

From Rotoworld: Indy Star beat writer Stephen Holder believes Bradshaw was the Colts' best back when healthy in 2013, but Bradshaw's lack of durability has made him a poor investment for NFL clubs. "If he does return, it will be an attempt to add depth, at most," writes Holder. Bradshaw turns 28 in March. He's missed 19 games over the past three seasons and underwent neck surgery in October.
I know what you're thinking... and no, I don't see him coming back to the Giants. As stated above, Bradshaw's days as a mail carrier are over. He's a complementary player -- at best -- at this point, but mainly he's a risk, especially to the Giants who need to get it right this offseason.

It's a shame, because Bradshaw had been one of the league's best big-game backs in recent years. If he does not find a home by summer, the Giants may take his temperature for old time's sake, but this could conceivably be the end of the line for this warrior.

Bradshaw, who was released by the Giants at the start off-season to relieve the team of cap space, has only visited with the Steelers since becoming a free agent. The running back made multiple trips to Pittsburgh so the team could check the progress of his foot following surgery.

Reports indicated the Broncos may consider giving Bradshaw a short-term deal. The team previously showed interest in Shonn Greene, who eventually signed with the Titans, and would consider releasing veteran Willis McGahee. The team is also interested in Michigan State RB Le'Veon Bell.

Addressing the media at the NFL Scouting Combine this afternoon, Giants head coach Tom Coughlin spoke to a number of questions surrounding the team this off-season.

One of the biggest surprises at the beginning of the off-season was the release of veteran running back Ahmad Bradshaw.

It was assumed by many that former first-rounder David Wilson, who impressed in Bradshaw's absence, would inherit the role of lead back. But Coughlin expects both Andre Brown and Da'Rel Scott -- a former Terp -- to compete for the job.

Earlier today, the New York Post reported Giants RB Andre Brown is preparing this off-season as if he'll be the starter come September.

Obviously, with the release of incumbent Ahmad Bradshaw, the battle for the No. 1 spot on the depth chart is between Brown and David Wilson.

It does beg the question, however, of whether Brown is capable of being the Giants' lead dog.

Yesterday, Ahmad Bradshaw mentioned that the Jets could be a possible landing spot for him this season. We told you we didn't believe the Jets - who are basically hitting the reset button this spring - would have much interest in signing him.

"On the surface, he appears to be an attractive option and the Jets clearly need a running back to compliment Bilal Powell and Joe McKnight.

With the recent release of workhorse running back Ahmad Bradshaw, Wilson is expected to be the lead dog in the backfield in 2013.

The rookie came on strong late in the season and bounced back nicely from his opening night fumble on the national stage. But now that Bradshaw is gone, the Giants will have to be a little more patient with Wilson as he continues his development.

As you probably have heard by now, the Giants have released three veteran players over the past 24 hours. LB Michael Boley yesterday and DT Chris Canty and RB Ahmad Bradshaw this afternoon.

These are just some of the tough decisions the Giants are faced with this offseason. They have to get down under the cap (approx $121 million) by March 12th and have to pay up some of their players approaching their primes i.e. Victor Cruz and Hakeem Nicks.

Yes, it's a business and when you've been as successful as the Giants have been the past few seasons, there is never going to be enough money to pay everyone. The team just cleared out about $14 million in cap space with the cuts so that will help. But they will miss the integrity and leadership these players have provided the past few seasons.

Just because the Giants? defense had glaring holes this season doesn?t mean that Big Blue?s offense has been completely exonerated for the team?s failure to make the playoffs.

Today, he outlines the the obvious that most of us here in the land of the Giants are trying to ignore: the Giants miss RB Ahmad Bradshaw - a lot:

Way back in May when I attended Giants OTAs, Eli Manning talked about David Wilson, and?the challenges he faced to simply get on the field?in his rookie season:

?You see talent and you see speed, and quickness, so those are obviously important things.? But for a running back it?s learning technique, footwork.? Protections are going to be a big deal, knowing what to do. If I?m changing protections and changing plays, is he going to be ready for that? And also routes.? Routes versus every concept, knowing where to be and all those things.? Those things are what usually take the longest and sometimes holds up a running back from getting on the field.?
On the very first pass play of the day, Wilson showed his deficiencies in pass protection. ?Linebacker Sean Weatherspoon will be coming on a blitz:

It wasn?t the defense?s fault that the Giants suffered a 31-13 loss to the Cincinnati Bengals, who had lost their previous four games.

The Bengals only extended scoring drive that resulted in a touchdown came on their very first possession, when Andy Dalton hit A.J. Green on a 56-yard strike. The Giants secondary looked confused on the play, but other than that blunder, the defense actually turned in a decent effort.

The problem was that the Bengals kept starting with great field position fueled by Giants? offensive turnovers or giving up big special teams? plays.
