Q: Scott writes:

Toby, did Akeel Morris really strike out ALL NINE batters he faced in 3 innings of work the other night? ?Can you make even a brief post on what you saw and how he managed to do that? ?Thanks.

This year, I'm writing up most of my Top 41 Mets prospects in roughly similar groups. These three arms at the back of the list form a very cohesive trio of strong-armed relievers. There's plenty of fastball here, but control issues and size make these guys relievers.

#37 - RHP Akeel Morris

The most imteresting thing here is that Akeel Morris continues to 1. throw well (4 K in 4 IP) and 2. has back-to-back four inning outings on five-days rest. That certainly looks like the team could be breaking him back into the starting rotation. Still just 20, Morris is raw, but has fanned 22 batters in 14.2 innings this year.

Friend of the site, Mike Newman, formerly of Scouting the Sally, now of Fangraphs took a look at the Kingsport Mets.

On Gavin Cecchini "I?d be remiss to not mention his hit tool was better than I was expecting... Cecchini is unlikely to become an impact bat due to lack of power, but true shortstop prospects are difficult to come by so he does not have to be."

2B Brendan Kaupe (pictured)?"A switch hitter, the 18-year old has excellent bat speed from both sides of the plate and appeared to have an advanced understanding of how to work counts to his favor. He also showed 55 speed from the left side by running a 4.15 home-to-first time and could likely match that from the right side as well.... He?s a nice player though and a steal compared to the average fourth rounder I see in person."

The Cyclones had a rough weekend series losing two out of three to the Lake Monsters.

Cory Mazzoni, the Mets 2nd round pick, did make his first professional start on Sunday. Mazzoni (pictured), who is working just one inning stints due to an innings limit this season, struck out the side and also hit a batter in his lone inning of work.

Lets get to part four of my mid-season review of my pre-season Top 41 Prospects. ?It strikes me that this section has a funny mix of the wildly unproven (Matz and Morris) and then low-ceiling guys close to the big leagues, none of whom worked out yet.

Part 3 on players ranked 26-30 is here. ?Part 2 on players originally ranked 31-36 is?here.?Part 1 on players originally ranked 36-41 is?here. ??Each player?s name links back to his original scouting report from before the 2011 season.

The last of the Mets affiliates to take the field will be the Kingsport Mets of the?Appalachian?League, as they open their season tonight against Johnson City. There is a lot of buzz surrounding this team, primarily due to a trio of young talented starters they will feature.

According to Tricitiessports.com, the K-Mets will feature three of the youngest and most intriguing Mets pitching prospects in their starting rotation. Juan Urbina,?who will get the call on opening day tonight, Domingo Tapia, and Akeel Morris will strut their stuff this summer in Kingsport.

Kingsport manager Frank Fultz had this to say about his highly regarded trio:

I recently had the privilege to have Kevin Goldstein, of Baseball Prospectus, answer some of my questions regarding Mets minor leaguers.

MD: Darrell Ceciliani had monster a season for Brooklyn. Does he have enough defensive ability to be an impact type big league CF?? What would you say his ceiling is?

KG: I'm going to start with a quick comment that applies to nearly all of your questions. You're asking about short-season guys, and it's such a nascent time in these players careers that we're projecting a LOT. These players can go in a ton of directions from here, many of them good, many of them bad, and we can just go on what we know. Onto Ceciliani, I wouldn't call him an impact defender, but he can play the position well, and that gives him a huge leg up, as you can't say that about most minor league center fielders. What he did offensively this year was a very pleasant surprise, and did wonders for his stock. He does need to work on his approach, as he's a bit of a pitch chaser, and he needs to work on his base running, but he can hit and I like him quite a bit.
MD: Cory Vaughn displayed an above average power/speed combination in the NYPL.? Do you feel he can continue this at higher levels of competition?

SS-A: @ Brooklyn Cyclones 4, Aberdeen Ironbirds 3- 10 innings

Darrell Ceciliani (2-5, 2B, HR, RBI) took the Cyclones home in style as he homered in the bottom of the 10th, to cap off a wild comeback to defeat the Aberdeen Ironbirds 4-3.? Brooklyn (42-21) trailed 3-1 in the eighth inning, when an Aberdeen throwing error on an Jeff Flagg (2-3, RBI, 2 SB) steal attempt sailed wayward, allowing Cory Vaughn?(1-2, 2B, 2BB, SB) to score.? Then leading off the bottom of the ninth, William Cherry ?(1-4, HR, RBI) delivered a clutch game tying homerun, to tied the score at 3.? This set up Ceciliani's walk-off blast to lead off the tenth.? Ceciliani (pictured) now bring his season totals to: .350/.405/.524.? Ceciliani leads the NYPL in batting average, runs, hits, triples, and total bases,?and is in the top 10 in 4 other categories.?

A.J. Pinera with another solid start (6 IP, 5 hits, 3 runs, 1 er, 1 bb, 6 K).? Pinera is now 2-1, 1.99 ERA in 9 starts for the Cyclones.? Johan Figuereo ?(2 IP, 3K) pitched two?perfect innings to pick up the victory.
