Despite what you think of the Raiders or their fanbase, this is indeed sad news. Al Davis, head coach of the Oakland Raiders from 1963-1965 and owner of the team from 1976 to the present day, was also the commissioner of the American Football League form 1966-1969, the years during which it merged with the National Football League. His work was instrumental in bringing the two leagues together to create the NFL we know today. His influence on football will be remembered for a long time to come.

Oakland Raiders owner Al Davis, the AFL pioneer who revolutionized professional football with his colorful and controversial style, has died according to the team. He was 82.

Davis was a huge proponent of the vertical passing game and was the author of two of the league's most famous axioms: "Commitment to Excellence" and "Just win, baby."
