Alex Smith

The NFL will release its schedule tonight at 8 p.m. In honor of this annual occasion in which we mark our calendars and cancel plans in advance of the fall, here are the games we're looking forward the most in 2013.

1. Denver Broncos

It's not a question the most intriguing game of the 2013 schedule will be the Manning Bowl, pinning up brother against brother in one of the league's most cherished match-ups.

Colin Kaepernick wasn't the 49ers' starting quarterback on opening day, but now he's engineered his team to the biggest stage in professional sports.

Kaepernick was named the team's starter after incumbent Alex Smith was concussed halfway through the season. In his first career start, the second-year signal-caller out of Nevada rejuvenated the Niners' offense, and the former second-round selection played well enough to earn the starting job.

And it's a story that's all too familiar.

The Giants' blowout victory over the 49ers yesterday said a lot about Big Blue.

But just how much?

The Giants earned a series of "firsts" and caused a series of "firsts" for the 49ers.

Giants? safety Antrel Rolle is sometimes accused of doing more talking off the field than playing football on the field. However, that was far from the case this afternoon, as Rolle?s two interceptions paced a dominant defensive performance in Big Blue?s 26-3 win over the San Francisco 49ers.

Rolle?s interceptions were incredibly timely and gave the Giants? offense great field position to put points on the board. Alex Smith, who came into the game with the league?s top quarterback rating (108.7), threw a total of three interceptions on the day after only throwing one in the prior five games.

The 49ers entered this contest as the leading rushing team in the NFL, averaging 196.2 yards per game. And if it was any consolation, San Francisco got off to a fast start offensively both on the ground and through the air.

As the Giants and Niners gear up for what has developed into a classic East Coast-West Coast battle, there has been plenty of back and forth between the two NFC squads.

Carlos Rogers is threatening to perform Victor Cruz's salsa. Jim Harbaugh is taking jabs at the Giants' coaching staff.

But how about what's going to take place on the field. Here's three key match-ups to watch for:

So what has me agitated this evening? For a while my biggest issue with this matchup was knowing that Aaron Ross was once again going to opt to wear those ugly white cleats that make him look like an extra on Saved By The Bell.

I thought about getting desperate, reaching down into my soul, and ranting about how game time beer commercials have gone from hilarious to ridiculous. At no point have I ever turned to a male friend and lectured him on the quality of his light beer choice.

When your buddy buys a VW Beetle because he likes how Katy Perry sounds on the stereo system, then you say something. When your buddy is late to the bar because he?s still in line at a Snooki book signing you douse him in lighter fluid, light a match, and then you sure as Hell say something. Priorities, people.
