Former Giants' RB Andre Brown is on the street again. He was cut by the Houston Texans yesterday.

Brown was not pursued by the Giants after becoming a free agent this past March. He signed a veteran-minimum deal for $645,000 with Houston, but apparently the relationship has gone sour.

Brown did not play in the Texans' game vs Arizona last Saturday night. He had apparently fallen from being Arian Foster's primary backup to the bottom of the Texans' depth chart.

The Giants are showing interest in bringing back RB Andre Brown.

From Rotoworld:?"With David Wilson (neck) in doubt and virtually nothing behind him, bringing back Brown is a clear priority for GM Jerry Reese. The interest is mutual as Brown said he'll do the deal "tomorrow if you want." Brown bounced back well off his preseason broken leg, debuting in Week 10 and proceeding to rush 139 times for 492 yards (3.53 YPC) with three touchdowns. Something similar to the three-year, $10 million deal Shonn Greene got from the Titans last year would make sense for both sides."

That's good news. Brown is a competitor and a tough north-south rusher. But if they sign Brown, they'll have to sign another player as well. His durability is always in question. He has yet to play a full season since entering the NFL in 2009.

All the focus this week in the Giants-Packers game has been on the fact that the Giants? defense will not have to face Aaron Rodgers ? arguably the best player at his position in the game.

But that doesn?t mean that the offense can take a back seat and simply rely on the defense to get stops. The defense has been great in the Giants? three-game winning streak, but now it?s time for the offense to do its share.

Offensive coordinator Kevin Gilbride met the media on Thursday to discuss the state of his offense. Of course, he was very pleased with Andre Brown?s performance against the Raiders.

RB Andre Brown will be playing his first regular season game in nearly a year this week. He has spent the first nine weeks of the season on the short-term IR list with a fractured leg, which now will be protected by additional padding.

"Yeah, I?ve got a shin guard," said Brown. "Or a fibula guard, tibia guard, I forgot which bone I broke. Yeah, they built a little carbon fiber plate for me. They said I would probably be wearing that for the rest of my career. It is what it is."

Asked if it held him back in any way, Brown quickly dismissed the notion...

Usually a unit that is ranked 29th in the NFL doesn?t have too much excitement surrounding it.

However, the Giants? running game, averaging just 69.9 yards per game, all of a sudden looks like a multifaceted entity that could actually be a weapon for this team.

Again, the eventual grade will be based on production up until this point, not the future. But it?s important for us to look at what this unit may look like in the second half.

The running back position in the NFL has undergone major changes in recent years. Most NFL teams don't ask just one player to carry the mail for them any longer. Rushing attacks have become a collaborative effort of situational players who possess different styles. The position has also been devalued at the NFL Draft, where no running backs selected in the first round for the first time in league history this past April.

The Giants understand the need for a stable of rushers. They recently won a championship deploying a three-pronged approach called "Earth, Wind and Fire." All of those players are gone, now, and the the team is turning to two uniquely talented young men - David Wilson and Andre Brown.

Heading into training camp, one of the themes of the 2013 New York Giants has been the upcoming reliance on a few inexperienced players to significantly contribute on both sides of the ball.

On offense in particular ? looking past Eli Manning, Hakeem Nicks and Victor Cruz of course ? a few young guns will be looked upon to shoulder the load.

And offensive coordinator Kevin Gilbride is confident that these young guns will come through.

In an ESPN Insider piece, Giants running back David Wilson is listed as one of five sophomore standouts poised to break out in their second season.

The article is authored by former NFL Rookie of the Year Matt Bowen, who spent seven years in the league.

From a player's point of view, Bowen concedes ball security remains an issue with Wilson, who was red flagged for fumbling problems coming out of Virginia Tech. However, Wilson has improved in that area, and his top-end speed to the edge is too valuable of a trait to keep him off of the field.

Addressing the media at the NFL Scouting Combine this afternoon, Giants head coach Tom Coughlin spoke to a number of questions surrounding the team this off-season.

One of the biggest surprises at the beginning of the off-season was the release of veteran running back Ahmad Bradshaw.

With the recent release of workhorse running back Ahmad Bradshaw, Wilson is expected to be the lead dog in the backfield in 2013.

The rookie came on strong late in the season and bounced back nicely from his opening night fumble on the national stage. But now that Bradshaw is gone, the Giants will have to be a little more patient with Wilson as he continues his development.

Running the football and playing tough defense were once the tenets of Giants' football. Those elements of the game have escaped them the past few years Their defense has been prone to late-game collapses, poor communication and surrendering huge chunks of yardage. Their running game was dead last in 2011.

The defense got hot late last year, as did the rushing game, and the Giants won a championship. But that did not change the fact that things needed to change. The Giants have been stockpiling good defensive players and drafted a RB (Virginia Tech's David Wilson) in the first round of this year's NFL Draft.

Ahmad Bradshaw became the featured back when Brandon Jacobs left via free agency. Wilson was supposed to challenge Bradshaw for playing time, but ball security and poor blocking tactics have pushed him down the depth chart. When Bradshaw twisted his neck halfway through the Tampa Bay game, the player who got his number called was not Wilson, but 2009 fourth-round pick Andre Brown. You know the rest. Brown has knocked it out of the park.
