The Brooklyn Nets placed forward Andrea Bargnani on waivers on Saturday and are working on a contract buyout, according to CBSSports.com's James Herbert.

New Brooklyn Nets GM Sean Marks tried to trade Bargnani for a second-round pick before Thursday's NBA trade deadline, according to the New York Post's Fred Kerber.

The Nets signed Bargnani, 30, to a two-year deal in the offseason and he has averaged 6.6 points, 2.1 rebounds and 13.8 minutes per game.

The Nets are expected to buy out F/C Andrea Bargnani if they are unable to trade him by Thursday's trade deadline, reports Adrian Wojnarowski of The Vertical (Feb. 15).

Bargnani, 30, signed with the Nets in July, and has dealt with ankle and hamstring injuries. He also missed time recently due to an illness.

In 46 games this season, Bargnani has averaged 6.6 points and 2.1 rebounds while playing 13.8 minutes per game.

The Nets (12-37) believe they've been playing better lately despite dropping 14 of 16.

Three of the defeats during their four-game skid have come by five points or fewer, including Monday's 105-100 loss to Detroit that marked their 15th loss in their last 17 at home. Brook Lopez scored 27 points and is averaging 26.4 over his last five, but he had trouble containing Andre Drummond as the Pistons held a 27-8 advantage in second-chance points.

Interim coach Tony Brown was pleased with the spark off the bench, as Andrea Bargnani scored 18 points and Shane Larkin had a career-high 14 assists.

It looked like Andrea Bargnani might not play due to illness on Tuesday. Instead, Nets fans ended up asking if they could give the whole team whatever Bargnani has.

Bargnani went 9 for 12 from the field en route to a team-high 20 point performance in the Nets' 102-98 loss to the Heat.

"My teammates found me on the pick and pop. It was all good passes and open shots. I was just aggressive," Bargnani told reporters after the game. "I think it was a good game. We played with a good effort, we gave ourselves a chance to win. The last two minutes they made some tough shots and we didn't. That was the game."

There may or may not have been some jokes floating around when Bargnani was listed as questionable given that he's always questionable. Leave it to the big man to make us look silly. Bargnani was right. He was just aggressive getting to the basket, and he was an easy target for Brooklyn to find down low. Twelve of his 20 points came in the second half, and it looked like Bargnani was going to be the one to give the Nets their second impressive victory in the last three days.

Unfortunately, the rest of the club just couldn't match his production. Brooklyn was outscored 50-28 in the paint, as Miami's bigs had no problem beating the Nets' double teams. In fact, Miami took only 10 foul shots the entire game, which is an indicator to just how uncontested their attempts were down low. It's a shame because I thought Brooklyn put forth an impressive effort, and it would have been nice to see Bargnani be a huge factor in a win. Instead, it's just a footnote in the team's 34th loss of the season.

The Nets got production from a very surprising entity on Thursday night to win their fourth game in their last six contest: Andrea Bargnani.

Bargnani was 8-for-15 (53.3 percent) from the field, grabbed six rebounds, and was a +13 in 23 minutes in Brooklyn's 100-91 win over Philadelphia.

"It was a good win because in our situation we take every win," Bargnani told reporters after the game. "At the end we got the 'W' and that's all that matters at the end of the day."

The Knicks' 2014-15 season begins in less than two weeks, which means there isn't much time left for coach Derek Fisher to figure out his opening night starting lineup and overall rotation.

Carmelo Anthony, Jose Calderon, and Samuel Dalembert are assumed starters, if only by default. Based on his positive play this preseason (and incumbent?starting two-guard), one could make a strong case for Iman Shumpert to slip into the starting lineup as well.

The one position that's still left wide open is power forward. Perhaps rightfully so, because as much talent as there is at the position, there's probably just as many question marks surrounding it as well.

Andrea Bargnani has recently began to work out and run with with the New York Knicks, teammate Raymond Felton said Monday night at an Under Armour event.

Bargnani, who is dealing with a pneumonia that kept him out of EuroBasket with Team Italy, is not scrimmaging and is getting winded easily. However, it appears as if he'll be ready for the start of Knicks training camp in a week.

Felton also said Amare' Stoudemire has began running, but like Bargnani is not yet scrimmaging with the team.

Back when I was in high school, C- was still a passing grade. But when you're being judged on an offseason worth of free-agent signings, trades and the NBA Draft, it's not as flattering.

Sports Illustrated handed the New York Knicks a C- grade for the offseason, one in which the team acquired Andrea Bargnani, Metta World Peace, Beno Udrih, Jeremy Tyler, Tim Hardaway Jr. and C.J. Leslie, and also re-upped with J.R. Smith, Pablo Prigioni and Kenyon Martin.

According to Rob Mahoney, the Knicks retained some necessary pieces and enjoyed some bargain signings, but re-signing Smith comes with its question marks, while trading for Bargnani did not address the team's needs.

It's been quite the summer for Andrea Bargnani, one of the newest members of the New York Knicks. But not everything has been going so well.

Bargnani has been ruled out from the European Championships next month as he deals with a respiratory infection. It's even more discerning as the forward reported to Team Italy's training camp in great shape.

Associate coach Mario Fioretti believes Bargnani is upset he won't be able to contribute to Team Italy this summer.

New Faces:?There are plenty of new ?faces in the Raptors locker room, but they are pretty familiar to fans in New York. Toronto traded Andrea Bargnani to acquire 3-point specialist Steve Novak, veteran big man Marcus Camby, Quentin Richardson and a handful of draft picks, but only Novak remains on the roster.

The Raptors also brought in D.J. Augustin and Tyler Hansbrough -- no marquee moves but ones that add some depth to their young nucleus.

With all of the offseason additions, New York Knicks head coach Mike Woodson is still unsure of which players he'll trot out as his starting five.

According to Woodson, only Carmelo Anthony, Tyson Chandler and Raymond Felton are sure bets to crack the starting lineup, leaving the shooting guard and power forward positions open for competition.

At the 2, J.R. Smith will play starter minutes, but the reigning Sixth Man of the Year will probably continue to provide an offensive spark off the bench like he did in 2012.

J.R. Smith has been a focal point of the New York Knicks offseason, and for obvious reasons.

The Knicks re-signed the NBA's Sixth Man of the Year to the tune of a two-year deal worth nearly $18 million, including a player option for a third year.

Smith posted career-highs in both points (18.1) and rebounds (4.5) in 2012, and told KnicksNow.com there was never a question about whether or not he wanted to remain with his hometown team.

Newly acquired center Andrea Bargnani is making a strong impression on the Team Italy coaching staff -- without actually being on the court.

Bargnani is a changed man, according to Team Italy associate coach Mario Foretti, who told the New York Post that the seven-footer has taken a noticeably different approach to his preparation for the European Championships.

"I think he's more mature," Fortetti said. "He knows better how we need to play at a certain level for European basketball. He's more aware of what he needs to do is and is more wise. He's more helpful this summer than his last summer (2011), is my feeling."

The addition of Andrea Bargnani and Metta World Peace has New York Knicks forward Carmelo Anthony excited about the upcoming season, but not enough that he can commit to the team long-term.

Anthony, 29, can opt out of his contract following the 2013-14 season. He has been rumored to be a target of the Los Angeles Lakers, where the franchise will look to rebuild and reemerge after the loss of Dwight Howard.

When asked whether the Knicks? offseason transactions have affected his decision to stay with the Knicks beyond next season, Anthony said he could not comment.
