The Islanders needed a big game from one of their struggling goalies against a dangerous Capitals offense, and Jaroslav Halak stepped up big in the team's 3-1 win Monday night.

Head coach Doug Weight has said that he wanted to help his goalies in Halak and Thomas Greiss figure what has forced them to be inconsistent so far this season. He also didn't care that many were confused as to why Halak was getting his third straight start.

"I feel good about both our goalies," Weight told Newsday's Arthur Staple. "No one else does. I don't really care."

What we're seeing lately with regard to the New York Islanders is not unprecedented. The team is suffering from what I warned of, in print and on the Secondary Assist podcast: A regression. All teams go through it. The larger question is, how soon until they get out of it?

The answer to that will ultimately decide their 2017-18 fate, not the sole fact that they suffered one...

With the Penguins scoring two power-play goals in Thursday night's 4-3 overtime loss, Isles head coach Doug Weight devoted a full hour at practice Friday to fix his team's penalty kill.

The Islanders definitely need help in that area as they currently sit 30th in the league with a 73.3 percent efficency on penalty kill opportunities. Thursday night marked the fourth straight game the team has allowed two power-play goals as well.

After a 45-minute video session, the Isles took the ice to practice their penalty kill for a full hour, which Weight thought was necessary to figure out what is going wrong.

Last season, Andrew Ladd didn't have the greatest start to his Islanders career. But, over the second half of the season, he picked up his form.

This season, he hasn't taken long to get off the bus, something that both he and head coach Doug Weight attribute to his health.

"My body is feeling better as a whole, which for me, has given me the opportunity to be more aggressive," Ladd told Cory Wright of the Islanders official website...

Andy Graziano, SNY.TV Twitter : Islanders fans have been desiring a 'true' first line for some time now. To be more specific, a true 'first-line winger' to play with captain John Tavares.

Last season, it wasn't quite good enough that Josh Bailey combined with Tavares and rapidly improving Anders Lee to forge a line that combined for 75 goals -- 31 percent of the team's overall production -- and 174 points. This year, through 13 games, it's even higher at 48 percent.

'He'll regress,' they said. 'He will come back down to earth and be the player he's always been offensively,' they added. 'He doesn't shoot enough' was screamed from the rooftops. And my personal favorite of all, 'How many of his assists are secondary assists, though?'

The Islanders lost in Anaheim, 3-2. They have won one of their first four games. After going 0-5 last night, Weight's team is now 0-15 on the power play this season...

The players are no longer getting coffee in the locker room and whispering to each other, "Cappy still here?"

A third goalie isn't being stashed on the roster, and limiting the reps of the excellent No. 1 and 1As, because of the long-shot notion he's the next Patrick Roy.

As a result, and because of the simple fact that they have the player personnel to get it done in a conference that is not steeped in quality, the Islanders will qualify for the 2018 Stanley Cup Playoffs...

The summer is over. Fall has arrived and with it, the return of the NHL. Training camps around the league will all be open for business soon, with the first on-ice sessions slated to begin Friday morning.

For the Islanders, it seems every year lately has been 'make or break,' for a variety of reasons. This year, however, the term might never be more accurate as the team looks to re-sign their franchise captain, finally bring some closure to a long, drawn out arena drama and return to the playoffs. The results of those three factors, each under their own cloud of uncertainty, could also decide the future fate of long-tenured general manager Garth Snow, who seems to be running out of time to turn this team into a true contender.

Islanders C John Tavares' contract extension is still an elephant in the room, but his teammates don't believe it will impact the team as he heads into the new season.

Several Islanders have been participating in informal skating at Northwell Health Ice Center, and many asked what they thought on Tavares' situation. They don't believe it will be a distraction if his contract isn't settled by the start of the season.

"Knowing how Johnny deals with things, his personality, I think that's what makes it a non-factor," LW Andrew Ladd told Newsday's Arthur Staple.  "He's so good at handling, whether it's the questions or the talk that comes with it, I don't see it being an issue. I think we know more in here than everybody else on the outside, so we're comfortable with where it's at."

Brian Erni and I continue our annual season review, taking a look back at the 2016-17 New York Islanders and analyzing each player's performance in a down season that saw the team miss the playoffs by one point.

We will be offering two reviews per week that will take us right through to the beginning of training camp in September 2017. Of course, there are a couple of things to sort out prior, such as potential trades that could alter the look of this franchise going forward and oh, yeah, that pesky John Tavares extension.

Doug Weight is still unsure whether he wants a career in coaching, but it sure looks like he's the perfect fit for this Islanders club.

The Isles went 24-12-4 during Weight's interim tenure, and the former NHL All-Star seemed to have earned the respect of the locker room over that stretch.

"His communication and his leadership were followed. The guys want to play for him," Anders Lee said of the coach. "Dougie came in and really changed the mindset of the team. He's got a bright future in coaching. If he wants to do it, he'll be successful."

In what has been a common second half occurrence, Andrew Ladd found the back of the net again on Thursday to help the Islanders walk out of Carolina with two huge points.

With the Islanders already leading 2-0 and New York on the power play to start the second period, Ladd took a pass from Josh Bailey, ripped a wrister, and beat Eddie Lack for his 22nd goal of the season.

"We tried to stick with it, especially losing the personnel that we've lost," Ladd told reporters after the game. "We had guys step in and I think we've simplified our game a little bit."

Calvin de Haan made Andrew Ladd's homecoming special.

A minute-and-a-half into overtime, de Haan took a cross ice feed in the neutral zone from Ryan Strome, skated into the Vancouver zone, and used a stutter step move to get separation from Sven Baertschi. He cut into the circle and sent a perfect pass through two Canuck defenders to find Ladd's stick set up perfectly along the ice in the crease for the game-winning goal.

For Ladd, a British Columbia native, is was his 19th goal of the season and his 11th in the past 20 games.

Andy Graziano, SNY.TV

For whatever reason, former head coach Jack Capuano was leery to pair superstar captain John Tavares with up and coming winger Anders Lee on a consistent basis. They would play together some, then be broken up after a period of ineffective play by any of the four lines that night. If the Islanders won, Capuano would stick to superstitions in almost all cases, keeping everything just as it was.

This year, after Andrew Ladd was given a week or so to work out chemistry with a player he had never played with before, the lines continued to jumble until a light finally went off, seemingly in the entire coaching staff's heads…..at once. I imagine the gist of the conversation going something like this, "We need a true, top line that can stick together for a long stretch."

The Islanders have been resilient all season and Tuesday night in Edmonton was just another example of their mettle.

Just two days after one of their worst efforts of the season -- a 5-2 loss to the Calgary Flames -- the Isles bounced back to grab their eighth and ninth points of a possible 14 thus far on their nine-game road trip.

"We've been really good coming back after a game when we haven't played our best," said Andrew Ladd, who scored his 10th goal in the last 20 games. "We got back to what we do best, grinding teams down, working hard."

The Isles have two games remaining on the nine-game swing (in Vancouver and St. Louis) before returning home to Barclays Center.

The Islanders' 4-2 over the Rangers had to put some smiles on all the Islanders' faces, but maybe none more so than relative newcomer Jason Chimera.

Chimera, who is only a few months into his tenure with the Isles, told reporters that his time in Brooklyn has already made him intolerant of Blueshirts or their fans.

"I've only been here six months, and I hate 'em," Chimera said of the Isles' crosstown rivals. "It's not just the team, it's the people that cheer for them. You hear your neighbors talking about the Rangers and you want to beat them even more."

Six-and-a-half minutes into the second period, Gionta forced Marc Staal into a turnover behind the net, gained possession, and quickly sent a centering feed to Ladd who flicked a quick wrister past Henrik Lundqvist to give the Islanders a 2-1 lead.

For Gionta, it was his third point (all assists) in his seventh game this season

Andy Graziano, SNY.TV:

By Doug Weight's and his own players' admission, not much has changed systematically for the Islanders since Jack Capuano was fired on January 17 and replaced on an interim basis by the NHL veteran of 1,238 games -- including 107 with the Islanders.

A 'tweak' to defensive zone coverage has been all that's been mentioned to the media ever since the switch, and the results have been strangely similar under both coaches. The Islanders have not lost consecutive games in regulation since December 13-15, when they were defeated by the Capitals and Blackhawks -- a run that has spanned 25 games: 13 under Capuano and 12 under Weight.

After Sunday night's victory over the offensively challenged Avalanche, the league's worst team, New York is now 8-2-2 under Weight, only two games better than the 6-4-2 they went in the previous 12 games under Capuano's leadership. Diving into more team-based statistics from the same time period, the results once again come out very similar.

After allowing five goals in three consecutive games against the Detroit Red Wings, Carolina Hurricanes and Toronto Maple Leafs, you would not have been alone in not liking the Islanders chances too much heading into their own 'house of horrors' against a team they do not seem to match up well against, the Philadelphia Flyers.

In dropping the first two games of the season series and allowing over 80 shot attempts both times, New York fell to 33-77-11-6 lifetime in Philadelphia with one regulation win over their last 24 games in the city of brotherly love. But this is a team riding high in the confidence department lately with a remarkable turnaround from the first half of the season, and they put a halt on all the bad mojo in capturing a huge 3-1 victory.

Although they did allow another 80 shot attempts, 36 came in the opening twenty minutes of Flyers domination, where the Islanders were fortunate to come out of tied at one thanks to a power play goal by Anders Lee, as he deflected John Tavares' bullet snapper from the right wing faceoff circle to collect his 19th goal, pushing him to within one of his second 20-goal season and just six off his career high, set in 2014-15 over 76 games.

Maybe Josh Bailey is the elite winger the Islanders have been searching for.

Bailey, 27, set up the game-tying goal with just under a minute-and-a-half in regulation with a beautiful slap-pass toward the front of the net that Andrew Ladd was able to deflect home. Then, in overtime, Bailey took a pass from Calvin de Haan and chipped it past James van Riemsdyk's stick, springing Brock Nelson for his game-winner, allowing the Isles to pick up huge second point on the evening.

Bailey also contributed a goal, his 11th of the season, with six-and-a-half minutes left in regulation to tie the game at four. It was Bailey's fifth goal in the last six games.

With the three-point game, Bailey improved to 6-8-14 over his last 12 games

Andrew Ladd looked like a $38.5 million bust for the better part of three months, but suddenly, the Islanders alternate captain is right in the middle of the team's resurgence.

With the Islanders trailing 5-4 and Thomas Greiss pulled in favor of an extra attacked, Ladd deflected home a slap-pass from Josh Bailey past Frederik Anderson and into the net with just 1:29 left in regulation.

"A lot has to go right to get one there, from the draw to getting set up along the wall and in front," Ladd told reporters after the game. "You've got to have a short-term memory on your mistakes at times like this. Win or lose, you move on to the next one."

To say Ryan Strome and Brock Nelson's Islanders careers have had their ebbs and flows is probably a nice way to put it, but now that they have been joined by Anthony Beauvillier to form a new version of the kids line (Anders Lee has since graduated to the top line), the results have been impressive, and the duo looks completely rejuvenated.

On Tuesday, with the Islanders and Capitals deadlocked at one in the third period, Beauvillier crashed the boards behind the net and forced a turnover. The 19-year-old rookie slid a centering pass in front of the net that found Nelson's backhand. Brock pulled the puck to his forehand, threaded a pass between two Capitals defenders, and Strome finished it off to give the Isles a 2-1 lead with 13-and-a-half minutes to play.

"There's a little bit of a buzz, some positive energy, and I think that's contagious," Nelson told reporters after the game. "When that's happening and that's going on in the locker room, it's pretty easy to go out there and just relax, have fun, and play hockey."

Brian Erni, SNY.TV:

It had become a running joke in the waning days of the Jack Capuano era. The Islanders were so bad possession-wise that it had become laughable.

Critics of the Isles' system pointed to their gaping hole in their Corsi rating to show why any kind of sustained success was not possible as long as the team stayed on the current course.

Well, New York has charted a new path with interim head coach Doug Weight at the helm, and the team is responding in a big way. Most notably, the Islanders have been a much better possession team since Weight's first game as head coach on January 10...

Brian Erni, SNY.TV:

Chaos can create opportunity, and that's exactly what a few New York Islanders players are hoping for in the wake of Jack Capuano's firing.

Doug Weight's reign behind the bench started with his first practice on Wednesday, as he preached passion, identity and, wisely, less time spent in the Islanders' own zone. That all sounds great, but better than that, his new role stands to offer a reset of sorts for some players who had struggled in the waning days of the Capuano era.

Who could take this fresh start and run with it? Here are some candidates.

Andrew Ladd (upper) and Cal Clutterbuck (lower) are both day-to-day, while Travis Hamonic (knee) is week-to-week, Interim Head Coach Doug Weight told reporters on Wednesday.

Ladd missed Monday's game against the Bruins, but could be available for tomorrow's game against the Stars. Clutterbuck also missed Monday's game with what is being described as a minor injury.

Hamonic injured his knee on Jan. 7 against the Coyotes in a knee-on-knee collision, and was placed on IR last Thursday.

And then there was one.

With the dismissal of Jack Capuano on Tuesday, the spotlight has officially shifted to the team's general manager. And while the seat under Garth Snow may have seemed hot before, the temperature is bound to be cranked up a few notches now that he has survived the third coaching change of his tenure.
