For the majority of this offseason, bringing back S Antrel Rolle was viewed a given. Signing a new contract with the Giants was simply a foregone conclusion. Not so fast.

?This is a great fit,? he said. ?I would love to finish my career here. I want to be with JPP and (Odell) Beckham, and I can?t wait to see (Victor) Cruz come back. These are my brothers. This is where I want to be.?
The 32 year-old Pro Bowler is in the final season of a? five-year, $37 million deal he signed back in March 2010, which, at the time, was the richest deal ever given to an NFL safety.

The other teams include the Bears, Bills, Cardinals, Jaguars, Raiders, Rams and Steelers.
The new stipulations that made these teams eligible are the following: The team has not made the playoffs the last two seasons, the team does not have a new head coach and the team has not appeared on the show in the last 10 years.

Accountability is the corner stone to any job and to any career. For the 2013 New York Giants there does not seem to be any accountability on any level, so when Antrel Rolle stands up and describes his offense as having no pulse and some players played with no heart?he should be applauded.
He is describing a frustrating, underperforming season, not one game, nor one player and it is becoming very clear that there is a problem in Giant land.

The Giants defense knew it would be a tough test today against the Seattle Seahawks, the NFC's top team that bolsters not only a strong running game, but also an offense that effectively utilizes the passing game. ?However, they had no idea that stepping onto the field at MetLife Stadium, they would have to battle not only a team predicted to make it to the Super Bowl, but also their own offense.
With five turnovers on the day, all interceptions by Eli Manning, the Giants defense was put in difficult situations on the field, countless times and although the final score was a blowout, 23-0, the blame cannot be on the defense. a unit that showed the only sign of life in a game that was just painful to watch.

So it?s up to defensive coordinator Perry Fewell to optimize the pieces he does have healthy in order to contain Robert Griffin III and the Redskins? offense.
RG III has been hampered himself by injuries all season, but Fewell still considers him the same dynamic player that he showed he can be last season.

In my opinion, the Giants best player on the team so far, comes from the safeties unit. Antrel Rolle has been one of the game's premier defensive players this year and has held down the Giants backfield each and every week. Rolle has been the voice of the team for many weeks and has attempted to do his best to instill confidence in his team and reassure the fans that the team will turn their season around. Even more importantly, his play on the field and ability to adapt to different defensive formations has showcased his value to Big Blue's defense.
"Antrel is everywhere. He has played corner, he?s played strong safety, he?s played free safety, he?s played nickel and he?s done that from day one since he arrived and it?s no different this year," said safeties coach David Merritt. "That young man studies more than any safety I have in the sense that he comes to me all the time and he?s asking about certain plays and we sit and we chat about the plays that he asks about and it?s tremendous to have a kid that way."

One of the Giants' captains, S Antrel Rolle, gave a speech to his struggling team today at QDTC. It is not something head coach Tom Coughlin is accustomed to doing, but under the trying circumstances, what could it hurt...?

"He?s got a little groin soreness, so we didn?t want to take a chance," said Tom Coughlin. "He?s reassuring everyone that it?s temporary."
Asked if he expects Rolle to be out on the field Sunday, Coughlin felt confident.

"I told them today I want to go out there and test it and see what I can do," Rolle said. "I?ll be smart about it, I?ll make sure I relay back to them and let them know how it?s feeling, if it?s still sore, if it?s good, if I can keep going or if I need to shut it down. We?re all on the same page as far as the training staff and coaches."
Asked if he felt he was gambling with his health by coming back too early, Rolle intimated the ultimate decision was not in his hands:

Today he was asked if his "boot theory" pertained to teammate Victor Cruz:
"I want him to be in that boot.? We need to make sure we take care of Victor.? I think we all know what he means to this team so if he has to walk around in a boot for a month, so be it.? Maybe I?ll put a boot on with him to just show him that I?m with him. "Rolle was asked if he knew when he was going to be cleared to practice...

The injuries are mounting and decisions are looming. The defense is going to be challenged more they have been in past years. Their best player, DE Jason Pierre-Paul, is weeks away from any football-related activities and is doubtful for the beginning of the season.
Now veteran safety Antrel Rolle, arguably the Giants' most versatile defender, is in danger of missing the opener as well. Wild horses might have to hold him back, however. He vows to do "whatever it takes" to be on the field against the Cowboys Sept 8.

"As a teammate and as an organization, we are extremely relieved," Rolle said. "He is a huge part of our offense and, more importantly, he gives me my best work when I am in practice, especially when I am in the slot. We are just glad to have everything behind us. We all understand this is a lengthy process, it is a business process. And more importantly he is back with the Giants for a long time.??
Rolle admitted he had no concern that WR Hakeem Nicks could stay healthy this season. He was asked as a defensive back what the differences were in covering Nicks and Cruz:

Two days ago, Woodson left his visit with Denver without receiving a contract offer, but the two sides reportedly remained in contact.
In addition to the Broncos, Woodson, 36, has visited with the Raiders, the only team known to have made an offer to the free agent.

"He will probably play more on the defensive line" this year," the GM said.
With the shakeup along the defensive line this off-season -- losing Osi Umenyiora to the Falcons -- Kiwanuka can serve as another pass rusher to complement Jason Pierre-Paul and Justin Tuck, who will line up at numerous positions up front.

Offensively, the team re-signed left tackle Will Beatty and added Brandon Myers to replace Martellus Bennett, who signed with the Chicago Bears. Also making the lineup is first-round selection Justin Pugh, who is penciled in at left guard, as well as Victor Cruz, who has yet to re-sign with the team for the coming season.

The Giants had seven picks in this weekend's draft, adding depth to a number of key positions, including offensive and defensive line, running back and the secondary. Of course, a position that remained untouched was linebacker.

But then again, Big Blue has welcomed Cullen Jenkins, Dan Connor, Aaron Ross, Louis Murphy, Brandon Myers and Josh Brown. The team is also hoping for healthy seasons from Shaun Rogers and Terrell Thomas.

Countless times, the Giants gave up huge plays in the secondary, especially on third down, which kept the opposing offense on the field.
Big Blue was near the top of the league in giving up passing plays of more than 20 yards. Stevie Brown had a breakout season, but that was pretty much all the positive recognition this unit received.

Whether it's via free agency, the draft or trades, the Giants need to upgrade their pass rush, which will allow their linebackers to focus more on stopping the revent and their defensive backs on generating turnovers.

With three years before he hits the free agent market, Giants general manager Jerry Reese is considering new ways to use ?to use Thomas, including moving him to safety.
"Terrell obviously has the multiple knee surgeries so he will have to tread lightly on that and see where he is physically," Reese said on Thursday during an interview on WFAN. "Right now, he is still rehabbing. We will definitely reach out to him and see where he is and see if he is going to be able to try to make another comeback."

In 2007, the Giants reeled off three wins in their final five games to make the post-season as a Wildcard. Last season, they won three of their final four.
Dealing with pressure has become a situation the defending Super Bowl champions have grown accustomed to in years past. However, Giants players agree that every year is different, and past success has no bearing on what transpires in 2012.

Offensively, the Giants turned the ball of three times, two of which were interceptions complements of Eli Manning. The two-time Super Bowl MVP completed all of 13 passes, no touchdowns, and finished the contest with a 40.7 quarterback rating.
But it's zero -- the number of points Big Blue scored -- that's glaring. It marked the team's first shutout in 16 years.

Several Giants, including Antrel Rolle and Chase Blackburn, were injured during the game and did not return.
Rolle suffered a possible concussion after slamming his head into the turf while defending a pass to Dez Bryant along the sidelines late in the fourth quarter. Rolle went to make a big hit, but once he realized Bryant would not make the catch, he jumped to avoid contact but landed on his head.

When asked about how he plans to attack Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo, who shredded Big Blue for more than 300 yards and 3 TDs in the season opener, Fewell said there's not much you could do about "classic Tony."
"I just think he had a really good game against us in the first ball game.? He made some plays with his feet, which is classic Tony, and stayed alive.? I thought he and Dez (Bryant) hooked up and did a good job, and he brought (Kevin) Ogletree in the game and he did a good job against us.? I think that they had a good plan and they executed their plan better than we played."Fewell said this time around, the secondary has made tremendous strides. Corey Webster and Antrel Rolle are getting healthier, as his Kenny Phillips. In his place, Stevie Brown has collected a team-high 3 INTs.
The defensive backs will continue to incorporate more press coverage into their repertoire, which has proven to be a solid method of late.

Jones' cockiness was understood ... at the time. Sort of, I guess.

Fewell said his defense was more focused against the 49ers than any other game this season. They'll need a similar sort of approach when talented rookie Robert Griffin III comes to town.
"You have to be aware of the quarterback. You?re always aware of him, but with guys that are mobile quarterbacks, you become more aware. Your senses arise a lot more. They can take off at any time and so it takes a lot of discipline in your rush lanes. It takes a lot of discipline in your run lanes and so that?s the main thing is that you?re more aware that this guy can take off and go on you at any point in time."Mathias Kiwanuka was one of the main contributors last week. The linebacker found himself at his natural position, defensive end, where he recorded two tackles and one of the team's six sacks.

When asked about the quarterback he and his defense face next, Robert Griffin III, Rolle admits he has not seen too much tape of the rookie and former Heisman Trophy winner out of Baylor, but he is impressed.
"I've just seen highlights and this, that and the other," Rolle said on his weekly spot on WFAN this afternoon. "But, of course, they're different. They're two totally different quarterbacks and I think that their game as far as their offensive approach is extremely different. RGIII, as you know, he can run the ball. I think he runs the ball a lot more than Michael Vick. I mean, he's a fast guy. He has a very, very strong arm and I think he's an all-around quarterback and he's going to get better with time."RGIII leads the NFL with a completion percentage better than 70 percent. He owns the third-best passer rating (100.5). He has tossed five touchdowns and just two interceptions, and ran for six scores.
