Raanta said that he thinks he was playing too aggressive in the past few games and that he focused on letting the puck come to him against the Kings. (Newsday)

Alain Vigneault said that Raanta made "all the timely saves" against the Kings and was able to hold the fort for the Rangers after they turned the puck over.

6:58PM: Adam Clendening is in for Steven Kampfer and Buchnevich is in for Tanner Glass.

Vigneault said earlier tonight (NYR):

  • "Our PK on the road has been good, at home it's miscues and misreads and it's an area that we are spending a lot of time on. It's an are that we know, speciality teams, need to be better and we are spending a lot of time on it."
  • On being consistent, "you look at last night's game and we are ready to play. In the first 10 minutes we had a lot of looks and other than one scoring chance 5 on 5 we didn't give them anything in the first. Then we took a penalty and they had two opportunities off of that. The second we know wasn't good enough, we weren't skating or moving the puck but we played real well in the third. We know as a group that it's a 60 minute effort and that is what we will try to do tonight."
  • On injury updates, "Kleiner skated and felt good. Dan did not skate, a scheduled off day for him, so we will see how they all are tomorrow."
  • On Buchnevich, "he's a young player, like I have mentioned a lot of times. We are talking to him about the areas that he is doing well and want him to continue and there are other areas where he needs to improve on and we are doing that on a daily basis and I am confident he will have a good game tonight."

Antti Raanta spoke after the game tonight and said (Rangers Game Notes):

On whether the team felt confident going into the third period…"I think we played a good first period. They got their goal from their only chance in the first period. Second period, they got their goal on their only chance. I feel like in the second period we didn't get the pucks deep enough. We started to lose the pucks in the middle, so they got the speed for their guys and they were spending a lot more time in our end. In the third period, I don't know what happened there but they got a 3-on-2 opportunity and the guy was just throwing the puck to the net. A guy had an open stick there and just redirected that. Tough way to lose. Not too many shots for me. You let three goals in - you know on all those three goals you can do something a little bit different. I was feeling that we had the keys to win this game, but we just couldn't use those. So I don't know what happened there."

Antti Raanta made 23 of 24 shots for the Rangers last night in their win over Detroit.

Brian Boucher praised Raanta on NBCSN and said that he played "really good," didn't look nervous and looks ready to carry the load for the Rangers.

Boucher called Raanta's game "rock solid" and noted that he made key saves at key times in the Rangers win over Detroit.

Raanta told Boucher after the game that he isn't thinking about the idea of taking on a bigger load with Henrik Lundqvist out and that he is just trying to take things one game and one shot at a time.

3/9/17 | 9:58PM: Alain Vigneault said on MSG, "In all the times that I have asked for challenges since we have been able to do this, this one I am 100% sure that I am right. When we made the call initially, the ref that hadn't made the initial call came to us and he said that the reason he is saying it's a good goal is because Antti was out of the blue. I'm looking at it and Antti's two feet are in the blue paint, there is contact that lifts his mask and obviously he can't see the shot. Then they told us that Antti's feet were in the blue but that his head was outside the blue paint, so it was involuntary contact because Antti's face was out of the blue. In my opinion it was the wrong call and at the end of the day we didn't play well enough in the third period, we got outplayed and they came back and scored two PP goals."

9:49PM: At 9:04 of the third period, with the Rangers up 3-2, Carolina scored a goal that the Rangers challenged for goalie interference.

The official ruling from the NHL Situation room was: "after reviewing all available replays and consulting with NHL Hockey Operations staff, the Referee confirmed no goaltender interference infractions occurred before the puck crossed the goal line."

2:13PM: Raanta spoke on Monday after the Rangers morning skate and said (NYR):

  • "Pretty good. Every day is a little better. We have been working a lot. When you have the chance to go on the ice and work on normal stuff it feels good."
  • "It's been feeling good and when you do lots of stuff off the ice you always try to figure out what feels good and not and when you have a chance to go on the ice and do the normal movement stuff you can feel straight away how it feels. I think this was the third time I was on the ice but the first time I had all of my gear on. It feels good and I can feel that I have some work to do and some treatment to go through and we are on the right track right now."
  • On the timeline being after the All-Star break, "I think that is the timeline. Only two more games, today and Wednesday...if we would have a little bit longer break and a couple of practices it could be before but the games come so fast and that is how we will go for now and get straight back after the All-Star break."

1:40PM: Raanta spoke on Tuesday after the morning skate and said (NYR):

  • On how the team is going, "Hank played great last week and the team continued playing good. We got good wins and a couple of more games before the small break. It's a good challenge for us tonight and it's nice to get going again."
  • On his recent stretch, "The games went well and it was also nice to get some practice again. When you play 4 games in 6 days you start to have some bad habits, you are not stopping and going. You are starting to cheat a bit and not doing things correctly anymore. It was nice to practice to get those little things better and better and when the team is playing this good it feels good and that you can help the team win every night."
  • He said that he didn't think his win over Pittsburgh prior to Thanksgiving had to do with his starting tonight and that maybe "it's just schedule wise it's my turn to go."

Antti Raanta met with the media following the Rangers loss to Chicago (Rangers Game Notes):

On tonight's game…"I think it was it was pretty much the same deal as it was Friday night in Chicago. Two teams, both have good offenses and both love to play with pace. They got a couple odd-man rushes there; they got two goals from those and we didn't capitalize on our chances. 2-1 loss, it's not a great way to lose the game when it's so close and with so few goals, but you have to respect the result. Darling was I think their best player and made some key saves in some key moments. When they got the second goal late in the second, it was tough to come back. Everyone knows how good they are when they have the lead going into the third. So it was tough, but I think we still played fairly well."

King Henrik's reign over? 00:04:41
After Antti Raanta started three consecutive games for the Rangers, questions surrounding Henrik Lundqvist's future began to surface.

Alain Vigneault said on Sunday night that he knew which goalie would start on Tuesday against Chicago but that he had not spoken with his goalies yet.

Antti Raanta has won three games in a row and has back to back shutouts while Henrik Lundqvist has been a healthy back up goalie for the past three games.

Larry Brooks wrote in the NY Post today that "it's time" for Lundqvist to get back in net and that he should start against Chicago, despite how Raanta has played.

Brooks writes that Lundqvist has had time to work with Benoit Allaire and that the timing works well since the Rangers have re-discovered their defensive structure. (NY Post)

From the NHL release, "Raanta went 3-0-0 with a 0.33 goals-against average, .984 save percentage and two shutouts in three games to lead the Rangers (20-9-1, 41 points) to six of a possible eight standings points. Raanta then recorded consecutive shutouts, making 26 saves in a 1-0 overtime win against the Chicago Blackhawks Dec. 9 and 19 saves in a 5-0 victory over the New Jersey Devils Dec. 11. In doing so, he became the first Rangers goaltender to post shutouts in consecutive team games since March 17-19, 2003 (Mike Dunham). Antti Raanta will start in goal for the Rangers against the Senators tonight.

Raanta spoke after the morning skate and said (NYR):

  • "we want our offense to get going more. It's going to be a tough battle today. There are some familiar faces on the other side so it will be nice to see Brasser and see what he has in his pockets."

On what happened, "it's the rule nowadays. You have to respect that. I fell down and they saw that I hit my head on the ice. That is one of those things that they are looking for. 10:22PM: Lundqivst said after the game, via the Rangers Game Notes:

  • On tonight's game…"[They had a] lucky bounce on the first [goal] and they made a couple of good plays on the second and third. I thought we played a pretty good game but for some reason this year they definitely had our number. But at the end, we were playing pretty solid. Like I said, the first one was a tough bounce in off our own guy and then they made two good plays."
  •  On his thoughts on his game tonight"I am just going to focus on having some good practice time. I look at the game, I look at the goals. Like I said, [it was a] tough bounce. Maybe [I'd need] better awareness on the second goal, but I have been feeling pretty good so I am not going to over-analyze it. I'll take a look at it and see what I can do better and work hard."

10:08PM: Alain Vigneault said on MSG after the game that he pulled Lundqvist because, "I just thought that at that time, 3-0, it might spark our team a little bit. I talked briefly with Hank between the second and third and just probably not worth risking anything at that point and that is why I made the change"

8:56PM: Antti Raanta is in net for the Rangers to start the third period of tonight's game against the Islanders.
