Brett Baty the latest Mets prospect to be added to 60-man player pool

Being added to the 60-man pool does not make prospects eligible to be traded by Aug. 31. They already were eligible to be traded

The Mets have added top third base prospect Brett Baty to their 60-man player pool, per the team's official roster, making the 20-year-old the latest highly-regarded Mets prospect join the player pool.

Baty, who will report to the alternate training site in Brooklyn, joins fellow top prospects Matthew Allan, Francisco Alvarez, and Ronny Mauricio, who were added earlier this month.

The Mets' first-round pick in the 2019 MLB Draft (12th overall), Baty made his professional debut last season when he played for two rookie level affiliates before a brief stint with the Low-A (short-season) Brooklyn Cyclones.

None of the prized Mets prospects who have been added to the player pool have played above A-ball, meaning their inclusion likely has to do with development during a year when the minor league season has been canceled due to the pandemic.

With the trade deadline three days away, it's important to note that adding players to the 60-man player pool does not make them any more eligible to be traded than they already were.

Any player in any team's system is eligible to be traded, though a player not on the 60-man roster needs to be designated as a player to be named later in any deal made before the Aug. 31 deadline.

An example of the above came on Thursday, when the Blue Jays traded a player to be named later (someone not in their player pool) to the Seattle Mariners or Taijuan Walker.
