David Stearns was officially announced as the Mets new president of baseball operations on Monday afternoon, and as he takes over the head job in baseball ops, one of the biggest tasks for the 38-year-old to tackle is deciding on the future of Pete Alonso.

While the first baseman was at the center of some trade speculation around the deadline in August, Stearns made it clear during his introductory news conference: He expects Alonso to be standing at first base at Citi Field when the Mets host the Milwaukee Brewers on March 28.

“I think the entire package weighs into it. Pete is a great player, he is also good in the clubhouse, and he is also home grown. All of that matters,” Stearns said.

“I know over the summer there was some trade speculation, and look I’ll just say I expect Pete to be the Opening Day first baseman next year. Pete’s an important member of this team, he’s an important member of this organization, and I think we’re really fortunate to have him.”

Alonso is set to become a free agent following the 2024 season, which is what fueled speculation that he could be moved. But what Stearns said on Monday falls in line with what SNY MLB Insider Andy Martino reported at the end of August, that the Mets had a “strong expectation" that Alonso would be on the team in 2024.

“Listen, I love the city of New York,” Alonso said after Sunday’s season finale. “This place has treated me so well and it’s a really special place. The fans are so passionate. There are some amazing people here in this clubhouse. I really, thoroughly enjoyed my time here and this place has been incredible. And I love it here.”
