According to Vacchiano, the Giants had interest in DeGuglielmo back when Judge was hired, but ultimately opted to hire Colombo instead. Colombo came from Dallas with OC Jason Garrett, but lasted just 10 games.

Per Vacchiano, the gist of the situation regarding Colombo and DeGuglielmo is this:

The Giants weren't happy with the overall progress of the line, particularly the young players. Judge has been working more directly in recent weeks with the line, taking a hands-on approach and hoping to give another perspective to the players. He concluded that he wanted to bring in DeGuglielmo (whom Judge had ties to previously) to be a consultant and also to work with Colombo.

When Judge told Colombo on Tuesday night, Colombo was displeased and an argument ensued. It was verbal, not physical. Then, Judge decided that the Colombo-DeGuglielmo pairing was obviously not going to work, and not one Colombo wanted. So he fired Colombo.

DeGuglielmo had his first NFL coaching job with the Giants as an assistant OL coach and quality control coach from 2004-2008. Since then, he's had stints with the Miami Dolphins (three times), Jets, Patriots, Los Angeles Chargers (assistant) and Indianapolis Colts as their OL coach.

Bringing in a new OL coach could be big for rookie Andrew Thomas, who has struggled since being drafted No. 4 overall in April.

Paul Alexander, who worked with Thomas during the offseason and loved what he saw from him, told SNY he "could not believe" what he was seeing out of Thomas this season.

"I see completely different techniques than he used at Georgia. I don’t see his feet getting set. And I see his hands bouncing all over the place, like he’s punching a guy like a machine gun or something," Alexander said.

“When he was at Georgia, he controlled guys with his hands. So I see something completely different than I saw at Georgia. And my question is: Why are you doing different things than you did? I mean, he was the best tackle in the country. And right now it’s like, ‘Oh my God!’”

Colombo was an offensive lineman in the NFL for 11 seasons before becoming an assistant OL coach with the Cowboys in 2016. Then in 2018, he replaced Alexander and was named the OL coach, staying in the position until joining the Giants with Garrett this past offseason.
