Here are the latest news updates and possible return date for Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers...

Aaron Rodgers will not play again this season, but the Jets did activate him from IR on Wednesday as part of his rehab, head coach Robert Saleh said before practice.
"We’re still gonna keep him on the active [roster]," Saleh said. "We’ve got the roster flexibility … and like I said it’s all part of his rehab and just having him out on the football field is a plus for everybody, it’s a plus for him and a plus for his teammates so we’re gonna keep him on the 53."
Saleh also mentioned that if the team didn't have the roster flexibility that they have that they "probably wouldn't be able to afford to do this."
Asked about Rodgers’ unprecedented comeback attempt from a torn Achilles suffered in mid-September this season, Saleh said, "just observing him, he tried everything he could to get back."
He added:
"Who knows, if the circumstances were different and we get a couple of these wins maybe we’re having a different conversation, but I know he gave everything he could."
With their loss to the Miami Dolphins on Sunday, the Jets were officially eliminated from playoff contention, which made Rodgers’ return to the team this year moot, especially since he isn’t back to 100 percent yet. But according to Saleh, if he was fully healthy he believes Rodgers would have pushed a little harder to get on the field.
"My instinct says if he was 100 percent, he’d probably be banging the door a little bit more. But like he said, he’s a couple of weeks away and so there’s weighing those risks and rewards for it," Saleh said.

The deadline for the Jets to activate Aaron Rodgers from injured reserve is Wednesday and head coach Robert Saleh said Monday that as far as he is concerned the veteran quarterback is “still in rehab.”
Rodgers had circled Sunday’s Christmas Eve game against the Washington Commanders as a date for his return if the Jets were still in playoff contention. However, New York was eliminated from contention on Sunday making the final three games a bit less consequential.
Saleh said you “could make arguments either way on both sides of the coin” about whether if Rodgers was cleared there is value to him playing this season, but “until that conversation is actually real, it’s not a conversation I’m thinking about.”
SNY’s Connor Hughes reported on Sunday that Rodgers would receive medical clearance this week and be activated off injured reserve and practice Wednesday through Friday, to play against the Commanders and the only thing that could prevent his comeback would be if the Jets were eliminated.
This week, the head coach said they have to meet with Rodgers’ doctors “to see if there’s actual clearance on their part” and then get clearance from the Jets’ doctors before having a discussion with Rodgers about “what the next step would be and the comfort level of everybody on board.”
“It’s not something that’s made in a vacuum, but all the right conversations would be had,” Saleh said.
NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport said Monday that he spoke to “several very high-ranking members of the Jets organization who do not want Aaron Rodgers on the field unless they absolutely really have to.”
Rapport continued: “Like if there’s nothing to play for such as right now and they’re not in the playoffs, they do not want him on the field, they do not want to risk 2024, they do not want to risk a re-tear, none of that.”
But the 40-year-old quarterback’s desire to play is still real.
“Aaron wants to play, let’s not confuse that one,” Saleh said Monday. “That’s why he’s been working so hard to get back, and his willingness to play, even if he’s not at 100 percent, is at the forefront of his mind. He wants to go.
“But, like I said, until he’s actually cleared, I’m not going to talk about it with anybody.”

Rodgers is "likely to be medically cleared to play" next week, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.
The 40-year-old QB recently returned to practice after his 21-day window opened on Nov. 29, but the team has only until Wednesday, Dec. 20 to make the move. If they don't activate him by Wednesday, then he can't be activated this season.
It's possible that the team could activate him by Wednesday, but not play against the Washington Commanders on Dec. 24, Schefter noted.
Head coach Robert Saleh told reporters Friday that Rodgers "pushed it a little bit yesterday" at practice, but did not indicate if there has been a decision made on activating him or not.

Head coach Robert Saleh told reporters on Friday that his 40-year-old quarterback ramped things up at practice the day before as he continues his rehab from a torn Achilles.
"He pushed it a little bit yesterday," Saleh said. "He went under center and [was] running boot[legs], jogging from drill to drill and he looks normal to me. It’s unbelievable."
He added:
"Credit to him, especially in this day and age where a hangnail can affect a game week, but this dude is grinding to try and get himself back. It just shows how much he cares and so I have an appreciation for him."
Saleh said Rodgers threw in individuals on Thursday, but only practiced 7-on-7, and that the next step for him is 11-on-11 drills.
New York will have to make a decision on its quarterback soon, as the 21-day window to reinstate Rodgers off IR is nearing its end. The Jets opened the window on Nov. 29 and have four more days to activate him.

The Jets are opening the 21-day practice window for Aaron Rodgers to come off injured reserve on Wednesday, head coach Robert Saleh announced. But they are "not there yet" in determining if the veteran quarterback will be activated at the end of the three-week window.
Saleh said opening Rodgers' practice window is different than when the Jets opened the practice window for other players coming off of IR who they were "getting those guys ready to play."
“This isn't so much getting ready to play, as much as it is a progression in his rehab,” the head coach said about the quarterback returning to practice just 79 days after sustaining a torn Achilles tendon on the fourth play of his first season with the Jets. "... He's been cleared for functional football activity. He's not cleared to fully play football. Like I said, part of his rehab progression."
Regarding what Rodgers will be doing on the practice field, Saleh said that the soon-to-be 40-year-old will be doing much of what he would be doing away from the team in his rehab. “With regards to certain drills and individual, being able to throw… instead of throwing with staff members, he’s throwing with teammates,” he added. “There’s no added risk to it. There are certain things that he’s been cleared for that we’re gonna allow for him to do.”
When asked if Rodgers coming back this fast jeopardizes next season, the head coach said that “everyone is on the same page with regards to what the next steps are.”
“We’re under the impression that he’ll be back in ‘24 regardless of what happens,” Saleh said in response to a question about Rodgers potentially walking away from football if he suffers a setback, before adding that veteran players can know their bodies better than a doctor or an MRI and adapt their play to deal with injury.
“As it pertains to Aaron," he continued. "I promise Aaron is not gonna do anything that puts himself in harm's way. If he is not healthy enough to play, Aaron is very, very smart. That’s not something that he is gonna put himself at risk for.
“With that said, he is driven, he is achieving things that have never been achieved with regards to this injury in its progression with regard to rehab," Saleh added. "I think it's remarkable what he is doing, but I also think he is smart with regards to how fast it's going."
When it comes to a return to games, he said that if the QB feels great at the end of the 21-day window there will be a discussion and it will be an organizational decision if the Jets are out of playoff contention at that time, but again Saleh emphasized this move was just a “progressing in his rehab.”
The head coach stated the obvious when he was asked if this development was sooner than he thought, “I think it’s sooner than everybody did."
“But I think it’s a credit to [Rodgers]. I know we’re getting caught up in trying to create a narrative around it, but he’s old school in the sense that he is driven," he continued. "Is there motivation to be the first to ever do it? Sure, but that’s OK. That’s his why. … It’s a mentality that I think young guys should be able to grasp to.
“He loves this organization. He wants to be with his teammates. He wants to be here. I think he’s sacrificed so much already for the organization, for his teammates, for himself. And he’s doing it again. I think it’s a testament to who he is as a human.
“And yeah, obviously there is that little bit of drive where he wants to prove it can be done faster than anyone’s ever done it before,” Saleh said before shrugging his shoulders, “that’s OK, that’s just part of his mental makeup. I think he still runs with a chip on his shoulder. And that’s the way he lives his life where he always wants to prove people wrong in terms of doubting him, and he’s a special human. And I think his actions are showing in how much he appreciates this organization and everything around it.”

Rodgers has been talking about his potential late-season return from his Achilles injury for weeks, and could soon be back at practice.
But he hedged a bit on Tuesday while speaking on The Pat McAfee Show, saying whether he returns to games this season will be due to a number of factors -- including where the Jets are in the standings.
New York, at 4-7, would likely need to run the table or at the very least go 5-1 in order to reach the playoffs.
"Are we alive, are we in it? Can I help the team, not hurt the team by being back out there," Rodgers said. "Can I protect myself? Can I move around and do all the things I want to do? If the answer is yes, then we move in that direction. If the answer is no, I gotta listen to my body.
"Obviously, I still need to get cleared by everybody at that point. But it's health first and then can I play, are we alive for the playoffs second."
