It's about that time of year, before Week 1, that team captains are voted on by the players. After tallying up all the votes, head coach Adam Gase revealed who will be wearing the "C" on their jerseys this season.
On offense, Sam Darnold gets another year with the captain's patch. He was voted a captain in his sophomore season in 2019, and that leadership continues in earnest in Year 3 for a guy the Jets will be relying on heavy.
Also on offense, a newcomer in T George Fant got the nod from his peers. Fant figures to be the team's starting right tackle with first-rounder Mekhi Becton on the left side of Darnold.
Moving on to defense, Steve McLendon is once again a captain. His veteran presence isn't overlooked and he gets nosetackle duties once again this season.
Joining him is Marcus Maye, who will be a first time captain. Maye has some big shoes to fill with Jamal Adams traded away to the Seattle Seahawks. Now is the time for Maye to step out of that shadow, and his teammates clearly trust his leadership.
And finally on special teams, only one captain emerges in Matthias Farley. He's the team's second free safety behind Maye, but Farley is a critical piece of the special teams unit for coordinator Brant Boyer.
The Jets captains will be leading the way on Sunday when they take on the Buffalo Bills at 1 p.m. on the road.
