The Jets and Giants jointly announced Monday that no fans will be allowed in attendance at MetLife Stadium during the 2020 NFL season “until further notice.”
The news came after New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy announced that his Executive Order limiting the amount of people at outdoor public gatherings applies to MetLife Stadium.
“This decision was reached after careful consideration of the current state of the COVID-19 crisis, in discussions with the Giants and Jets, and in consideration of the health and safety of our fans, players and staff, which will continue to be the primary focus for our teams,” the announcement read.
Also, training camps and practices will not be open to the public. With rookies expected to report on Tuesday, both teams have been putting in the necessary changes to their facilities to adhere to social distance guideline in an effort to make sure players feel safe. For the Jets, that meant having extra trailers at their Florham Park facilities to use as locker rooms, as they need to be six feet apart.
There is more work to be done on that front, though, as many players joined forces with the hashtag “#WeWantToPlay” on Sunday to shed light on the fact that the NFL hasn’t figured out all of its coronavirus guidelines yet. Giants 2019 captains Saquon Barkley and Nate Solder as well as two new Jets -- Frank Gore and Pierre Desir -- were among those voicing their frustration.
While that continues to be worked on between the league and the NFLPA, MetLife Stadium made it clear that they will follow suit with the rest of the professional leagues across the country by not allowing spectators until something changes.
