Jets waive DE Vinny Curry, who missed season due to rare blood disorder

It appears Vinny Curry’s tenure with the Jets has ended without the veteran defensive end playing a snap.

According to the league’s transaction wire, the Jets waived Curry, who missed the entire season after being placed on the Reserve/Non-Football Injury list in late August.

Shortly after being placed on the NFI list, which would have caused him to miss the first six weeks of the season at a minimum, Curry announced that he would not be playing at all in 2021 due to a rare blood disorder. Curry had his spleen removed, as recommended by the team, but developed blood clots while recovering. Curry was put on blood thinners and told by doctors to avoid contact.

Curry signed a one-year deal with the Jets last March worth just over $1 million in guaranteed money. The hope was that Curry, along with Carl Lawson, could provide some veteran leadership and production to the Jets’ pass rush, but both players ended up missing the entire season.

A Neptune, N.J. native, Curry has played nine seasons in the pros, eight of which as a member of the Philadelphia Eagles, the team that drafted him in the second round in 2012. Curry has recorded 32.5 sacks during his career, helping the Eagles win a Super Bowl in 2017.
