The Knicks did all they could to keep up with the star-powered Brooklyn Nets, but fell short and lost 112-110 on Tuesday night at the Barclays Center.

Here are the key takeaways …

- After nailing a step-back jumper, Julius Randle found a cutting Mitchell Robinson for a huge slam dunk, but James Harden scored on a step-back three-pointer as the Nets trailed 8-7 early on in the first. Harden gave the Nets the lead on another three and forced Tom Thibodeau to call timeout with 7:58 remaining in the quarter.

Harden became the fourth player in NBA history with 2,500 career three-pointers, joining Ray Allen, Stephen Curry, and Reggie Miller.

- Rookie Cam Thomas gave the Nets a 24-22 lead with a corner three, and out of a timeout, Kevin Durant crossed up Randle and found Thomas for another three. Derrick Rose then came right back with a three-pointer of his own. Both teams led by as many as eight points, but the Nets led the Knicks 33-28 after the first quarter with Harden scoring 15 points in the quarter and Alec Burks scoring nine points.

- RJ Barrett and Obi Toppin started the second quarter out strong, both having early dunks to bring the Knicks to within three points. Rose drained a mid-range jumper and forced Steve Nash to call timeout as the Knicks trailed 45-41 with 7:18 left in the half. Immanuel Quickley scored four straight to tie the game up at 45-45 out of the timeout. Randle finished over KD and LaMarcus Aldridge with his left hand and converted the and-one to go up 52-49.

Barrett exited during the Nets' timeout midway through the second quarter and was later ruled out for the rest of the game with a non-COVID related illness.

- Harden made a pull-up three to give him 28 points in the half, but the Nets trailed the Knicks 61-60. New York outscored Brooklyn 33-27 in the second quarter, as Burks had 13 at the break and Rose had 12 points in 14 minutes off the bench.

- Rookie Quentin Grimes did not play in the first half but started the second half with Barrett out. Patty Mills made back-to-back threes and the Nets led by five points. Harden gave the Nets a 72-61 lead with a put-back one-handed dunk. Evan Fournier made back-to-back three-pointers and Randle hit a mid-range jump shot as the Knicks went on a 16-4 run and trailed 88-84 heading into the fourth. Brooklyn outscored New York 28-23 in the third quarter.

- Quickley gave the Knicks a 92-90 lead with his second three-pointer of the night, as they opened the quarter on an 8-2 run. Durant attacked the rim and was fouled by Rose and Thibs challenged the call, but it was upheld as Durant made both foul shots to give the Nets a 99-98 lead with 5:45 remaining. Burks put the Knicks up two, but Mills finished inside and then KD scored over Randle on the next possession to go up 107-105. Randle was then called for a technical foul, giving Durant a free point at the line.

Fournier made a three-pointer to tie the game at 110-110 with 17.7 seconds left in the game. Robinson fouled James Johnson attacking the rim, and he'd make both foul shots to give the Nets a two point lead with 2.2 seconds left. Fournier's heave from just over half court hit the back of the rim at the buzzer.

- Burks led the Knicks with 25 points on 9-of-21 shooting in 39 minutes, and Randle scored 24 points on 11-of-22 shooting in all 40 minutes of action. Harden scored a game-high 34 points to go along with 10 rebound and eight assists, while Durant had 27 points and nine assists.
