Mets clinch at least top Wild Card spot; only NL East battle with Braves remains

Winner of NL East will almost certainly be the No. 2 seed and receive a bye to the NLDS

On Monday, the Mets clinched a spot in the playoffs with their win over the Brewers in Milwaukee.

On Tuesday, the Mets clinched finishing with a better record than the Philadelphia Phillies, which meant they would finish with at worst the second Wild Card and No. 5 seed in the National League playoffs in the event they don't win the NL East.

Now, the Mets have clinched finishing with at least the first Wild Card and No. 4 seed in the National League playoffs -- basically, their fallback if they don't win the division over the Atlanta Braves.

The Mets have done that by guaranteeing they'll finish ahead of the San Diego Padres, who -- like the Phillies -- are currently in Wild Card position. The Padres lost to the Colorado Rockies 4-3 in 10 innings on Friday night.

The first Wild Card will host all of the potential three games in the new Wild Card Series against the No. 5 seed.

Since the Mets and Braves are comfortably ahead of the St. Louis Cardinals -- the near-certain winners of the NL Central and by association the No. 3 seed -- the winner of the East will (barring something very weird happening) be the No. 2 seed and receive a bye to the best-of-five NLDS, where they'll face the winner of the No. 3 vs. No. 6 Wild Card Series. That's because the Los Angeles Dodgers are close to clinching the No. 1 seed, and will face the winner of the No. 4 vs. No. 5 Wild Card series.

The above means that the only real thing of import to the Mets now is the battle for the NL East. Everything else has been decided or is a formality.
