Mets first base coach Wayne Kirby underwent prostate cancer surgery on Tuesday in New York, and is expected to return to the team in the next 10 days.

Kirby, 58, texted with the New York Post's Jon Heyman after the successful surgery, and said that he's "feeling good."

"Pretty awesome surgery," Kirby said. "I’m walking the halls of the hospital and feeling good."

During the All-Star Game in Los Angeles on Tuesday night, Kirby's daughter, Caylee Kirby, tweeted a picture of Mets first baseman Pete Alonso and San Diego Padres third baseman Manny Machado holding up signs with Kirby's name on it during a Stand Up to Cancer segment.

Kirby played in MLB from 1991 to 1998, including stints with Cleveland for five-plus seasons, the Los Angeles Dodgers, and his final season with the Mets. After retiring, Kirby went into coaching and served as the Baltimore Orioles first base coach from 2011 to 2018 under current Mets manager Buck Showalter, and was then reunited with Machado in San Diego from 2020 to 2021.

Showalter then hired Kirby to be the Mets first base coach in January.

Kirby was advised by people around the Mets, including Showalter, to get the surgery done now after doctors found the cancer in the spring, according to the Post.
