Mets signing former Yankees RHP Luis Severino to one-year deal

Severino pitched to a 6.65 ERA last season but a 3.39 ERA over his previous seven years with the Yanks

The Mets are finalizing a deal for former Yankees right-hander, Luis Severino.

SNY's Andy Martino confirms the deal, which was first reported by MLB.com's Mark Feinsand. According to multiple reports, the deal is for one-year, $13 million. Severino can also earn up to $2 million in performance bonuses, according to reports.

Severino struggled this year with the Bombers. He pitched to a 6.65 ERA but was up-and-down over his previous seven seasons where he posted a 3.39 ERA in 638 innings. Most of his struggles were thanks to injuries, which were aplenty for the 29-year-old.

He made a combined seven appearances (three starts) over three seasons from 2019-22, including missing the entire 2020 season due to Tommy John surgery.

Injuries also played a part in Severino’s 2023 campaign as he missed time at the beginning and the end of the year.

But if Severino can stay on the field, the Mets have a potentially great signing because of the failed potential with the Yanks.

After two unremarkable seasons to start his career, Severino broke out in 2017 when he went 14-6 in 31 starts with an excellent 2.98 ERA. His WHIP was 1.04 that season and struck out a career-high 230 batters in 193.1 innings.

He would follow that up with an equally impressive 2018. In 32 starts, he went 19-8 with a 3.39 ERA and 1.14 WHIP. He also struck out 220 batters in 191.1 innings.

Severino was an All-Star in both 2017-18 and was third and ninth, respectively, in Cy Young voting in those two seasons.

With the Mets needing starters for the upcoming season behind Kodai Senga and Jose Quintana, Severino easily slips into the middle of the rotation.

The Mets are still in on Japanese ace Yoshinobu Yamamoto and this signing does not affect the team's ability to acquire the 25-year-old. There is plenty of room in the Mets' 2024 rotation for Severino and Yamamoto.
